Today on Past Gas, we’re zooming in on a single year of Formula One-- one that saw the loss of a legend and the birth of a new superstar. We can often point to one year that shapes us-- whether it be through hardship, hard-won victory, or both. For F1, that year was 1994. It’s a gut-wrenching season that changed the sport forever, and today on the podcast we give you the whole story. What were the challenges? Who overcame them? Whether you’re an F1 fan or new to the sport, this episode is a must-listen.

Another great podcast guys, thanks again! It is interesting to note that Nolan declares Roland Ratzenberger "died instantly" as under Italian law this would cause the race meeting to be suspended , therefore Sagis, the company owing F1 would lose around 6.5 million dollars and Senna would not lose his life. We can assume then that Roland died after leaving the track, in the same way that no-one dies at Disney

Yea Joe, that shit hit me hard too, I was 13 or 14, a huge F1 fan, and a huge Senna fan. I watched that race live on TV with my dad. I couldn't finish watching the race after it happened. My dad came and told me about 3 hours later that he passed...I didn't watch an F1 race for 5 years until 1999 when Schumacher was driving for Ferrari. Another amazing era in Formula 1, the V10 era.

The whole legal saga of the Italian courts going after Williams is told really well in Adrian Newey's book, How To Build A Car. Jules Bianchi was F1's last fatality but not a race-day fatality, he died 9 months later.

Another great podcast. Just some added info: Senna's steering column was modified to be longer so he would be more comfortable in the cockpit, his idea. And the Tamburello section at Imola is very bumpy, which is theorized played a major role with Senna's steering column breaking. You can get an idea how bumpy it really is when watching the in-car video right before the accident. Keep up the excellent work guys. 💪

F1 History is epically cool. I do have a couple suggestions for future pod casts. 1) An episode on the history of a 9 time NASCAR champion that most young racing fans have never heard of; Richie Evans! The man absolutely dominated the Modified series and was salt of the earth guy who worked hard, drove hard and partied hard. Outside of the North East few people are familiar with Modifieds but they were the premier NASCAR class in the early days before Bill France Sr. decided it would be more lucrative to have the "Stock Cars" and the Grand National division take the top spot. And 2nd) an episode on the other short track oval class that was born in NY the Supermodifieds! A car so sick that it features active aero like an F1 car, 800hp+ ,1,850lbs and when ran on the same track as the IRL many of the Supermodifieds were ticking off lap times on par with Indy Cars (believe that was at Phoenix). They're the fastest short track cars on the planet! and if the rules hadn't hampered development the cars could've been even more insane! Check out the rear engine AWD car campaigned for 1 season back in the 70s built by Jim Shampine.

Hey team Donut. Really starting to get into the podcasts you guys are making and a nice addition to the shorter format KZfaq videos. I have an idea which is in a bit of a niche market but I believe it would get a heap of views, especially in the Aussie and NZ fan base. To do an in-depth podcast about Peter Brock, arguably the best touring car driver we have ever had in Australia. He pretty much won the championships in whatever cup he was racing in and was, and still is just about a household name to anyone who followed motorsport here in Australia and NZ. He was tragically killed doing what he loved doing in a Targa west rally in Western Australia in ‘06 and shook the nation from his loss as one of the all time greats in touring car driving not only here in Australia but in many other parts of the Motorsport world. He drove cars from Holden , Ford, Chevrolet, BMW and even a BNR GT-R Skyline to name a few. Anyway I hope it’s something you guys could explore for a future episode. Thanks and keep up the great work. Jim ✌️🙂

1994 was a crazy year for motosports in general, in Le mans the legendary group gt1 was created and cars like the skyline, supra and nsx raced altogether (also the bpr gt global series was created ) meanwhile in rally the Toyota's Turbo scandal exploded meaning that they would get disqualified. At Nascar Dale Earnhardt won his seventh tying petty´s record

The Benetton B194 by then had an early version of the "Blown Diffuser" as used by Red Bull in the 2010's, thus the engine sound which had an impression of traction control. What was sketchy on the Benetton was the "Option 13" setting. Look it up, it's Launch Control activated at the start. Also notable was the quicker refuel due to a removed filter/apparatus on the refueling hose. Also, considering the team principal then was Flavio Briatore, morality isn't really a strong point. Same Flavio Briatore, now at Renault, was involved in the 2008 Singapore GP "Crashgate" scandal, a race won by Fernando Alonso in said Renault.
