In the world of engine tuning, two names (strange as they may be) are often at the top of the list. These companies upended the racing world with their attention to detail and refusal to accept anything but the best in terms of power, precision, and yes, speed. Today on Past Gas, we take a look at Spoon and Mugen. How did these companies start? How have they evolved over the years to stay on top? What are their plans for the future? And where did they get the name ‘Spoon’ from, anyway?

Now that you´re talking about japanese tuners, for another episode you should talk about Isao Amemiya (RE Amemiya), the one who tune the RX-7 with the sick body kit (that is not Veilside). anyway, you can talk about RE Amemiya & a cool story of his youth when he had a Mazda Chantez and tuned to race against the rich kids with Porsche´s in Tokyo and off course his other masters pieces.

Most consistent and intuitive car that I have ever driven was a 1991 crx si stick. It was my girlfriend's car, and she had the "it rides like it's on rails" poster on her bedroom wall. Maybe the best all around car I can think of!

Perfect timing. I was at the drive in last night grabbing burgers and I saw the nicest white and grey CRX I've seen in at least 20 years.

Dirt bikes in the late 70s were NOT heavy with bad suspension. A slightly better rider on a 1979 bike will annihilate a lower-class rider on a 2023 bike. The pro works bikes especially were incredible. The heavy "desert sled" thing was a 60s and early-70s deal. The "real" motocross bikes at that time like Husqvarna, Maico, and CZ were pretty light, but seriously expensive and were temperamental full-race machines. Suspension was short-travel, but the Evel Knievel jumps of modern motocross weren't used, so it worked. Amateurs would take heavy street bikes and modify them, like the modern "scrambler" trend is imitating. That all changed when Suzuki started making affordable, reliable, but kinda heavy and sketchy full-race bikes. Around the same time, Yamaha created a VERY affordable, very lightweight dual sport (called enduros back then) that immediately killed the sleds overnight. Just 5 years after that, Maico started the long-travel suspension arms race, and by 1979 every dirt bike had fully modern travel and weight. Companies like Ohlins and Fox were created in this era, making tunable shocks that are still completely acceptable even by modern standards, so long as you get the shim stacks tuned to your application. Development happened blindingly fast in that era. Cars were in the smog era, just motocross went space-age between 1970 and 1980.
