Jeremy Clarkson is one of the world’s most famous authorities on cars. As Top Gear’s most notorious host, Clarkson has been a major part of car culture since he first started hosting the show in 1988. But to many outside of the car community, he’s despised for his offensive and controversial opinions. How did it come to this? Why is Jeremy Clarkson so revered by car enthusiasts, yet reviled by almost everyone else? Are we able to separate the art from the artist, or are his actions unforgivable? All that and more, for today’s 150th episode of Past Gas - on the notorious Jeremy Clarkson.

I love Jeremy. Found out about Top Gear when I was 8 and I'm 22 now and still love watching them. Whether it's Top Gear or Grand Tour or their many solo projects, I've never felt connected to TV personalities but Jeremy, Richard and James are all so likeable. And I don't think anyone will ever come close to what they have done.

@@mindyabusinesses649 bruh, they are not on Jeremy, James and Richard's level, I mean don't get me wrong, Donut is definitely entertaining and it keeps me coming back for more but they can't match the natural chemistry of the group, and will never be able to outdo the comedy of Top Gear, for the exact same reason that they're putting down Jeremy in the video(comedy that borders on offensive), because they think they have to walk on eggshells when they deliver their comedy, leaving themselves a narrow window of what they think they can and can't say, so as not to offend anyone, thanks to this pansy ass society we live in now, not saying that comedy should always be offensive/bigoted but when comedy is made in a way where you have to worry about hurting somebody's feelings all the time it takes away from the hilarity of it all, if we can't make fun of ourselves and each other (which is one of the columns by which comedy is held up) then comedy is doomed, individuals get too butthurt by comedy that is making fun of something that pertains to them because of their narcissism, comedy is not an egotistical practice, jokes aren't meant to be taken seriously, they're meant to be laughed off, and many times the comedian makes fun of themselves more than others, but it's always that one joke that hurts somebody's feelings and fuck whoever that is that gets offended, because they need to grow a pair, hell I'm part American Indian and all the bullshit, like the removal of the Indian mascot from the Washington redskins, basically, a few outsiders found the image to be offensive, and for some reason those few speak for the majority (The entire Indian nation), however, when I first heard that they were doing away with it, I was like "Yeah, why don't y'all whitewash everything, and remove every single image of an American Indian from every single thing, just delete our history (as the Romans tried to do to the Carthaginians), so nobody knows how proud of a warrior race we were/are", that's what these sissy ass Europeans wanted all along, to erase all memory of the indigenous people, so there will be no record of us, and why, of all the things to remove our image from, they chose a football team, football teams are named after things that are feared, strong and badass, for example Bears, Panthers, Broncos, Cowboys, Raiders, etc., but apparently Indians are not a sign of strength in America anymore, anyway humor has been ruined by the sissy ass people in this country, and as usual there is a trickle down effect that will be felt forever in this country as long as we keep feeling sorry for butthurt people, fuck them! Exterminate the vermine, separate the mice from the men, and if somebody is reading this and you're offended go KYS mutha fucka!

You missed the context of the thing about shooting public service workers. He'd said that the strike was a great thing because the roads etc. were nice and quiet, but then said that, as the BBC must always present balanced views, he'd take the striking workers out and shoot them. It was a clumsy joke.

Loving the longer episode, able to squeeze more content in. Like many here, TopGear was by far my favourite TV show, the chemistry that Clarkson, Hammond and May had throughout the series. I liked the way Clarkson described cars, the global adventures they went on, and the "buying crappy old cars for stupidly low amounts of money." Also, how this show made cars more appealing to the masses, the fact that even non car people seemed to enjoy the show; probably as it become more a comedy show that focused on cars and not so much a traditional car show. For Jeremy's controversial aspects, I did kinda ignore them as I was too invested in his presentation style to notice. Even now, I'd view his worst insults and jokes as acceptable during the time it was filmed, similar to shows and movies from previous decades.

He was someone I watched growing up, laughed at and adored, loved his two shows on Nazaiire and the Victoria Cross as they were well written and done. However, having met him several years ago before he even bought his farm. He is quite frankly a horrible man that has become detached from normal life with his vast wealth and celebrity. I still enjoy the old Top Gears now amd again. It was a harsh lesson on people in front of the camera being vastly different from off the camera. Don't meet your heroes people, they live long enough to become the enemy. Although, having met James May he was exactly as he is, true to form. 🤷‍♂️

I watched most of the top gear shows, I'm 43 and live in Scotland, I'm catching up with all the donut media shows, which I really enjoy but would be great to see a European show where we could have the cars you can't because of the American importation issues. Keep up the jokes guys, you do remember me of top gear. JC has always been great with his word play. I remember tiff needle the racing driver was on top gear. He pops up in the show through the years. The difference in cars here are completely different, I was in the state's in 95, I loved the big pickup trucks you guys have are huge.

So I just done watching the low rider podcast, and I haven’t caught every single podcast yet, but I was curious if Donut has covered the style of cars you often see in the South. Old Cadillacs, Camaros, and cars of that body style that are painted vibrant colors and thrown on ridiculously huge rims. I have always wanted to know more about where the roots of that car culture come from. Idk if it has anything out West but I never see them in the mid-Atlantic or NE. But when I’m in Alabama, or when I was riding around with the ball team in college, I saw them all over the SE.

The cheap car challenges were pure magic plain and simple, the snowflake like opinions of the way things in europe (pre 2020) work deeply offend me because we don't sue people like you do. We get away with it but more often than we not just talk it out. Clarkson Hammond and May, comic relief heroes of an era we will never meet again. The time when we didn't fear criticism when bad things were just stuff on the news. Now you can't get away from forceful opinions, he who shouts the loudest gets heard.. the life we love crumbling before our very eyes...

The thing is with the whole Falkland Island war is the fact that Argentina started that war by illegally invading the Falkland, this would be like if Venezuela were to invade Puerto Rico because they think it belongs to them... How do you think America would react? Like it or not Argentina needa to understand they were the "bad guys" in that conflict... Think about it, England went all the way down to Falklands and successfully defended it's territory and it's citizens against a foreign invasion by at that time an incredibly corrupt murderous dictatorship and a failing economy...

Guys, not everyone agrees with your politics and that doesn't mean they're bad. It really annoyed me at the end when you said Clarkson was a piece of shit. I can't think of one time he said anything within the context of hate. Context is everything. Ignoring it is a major tenant of the rot in the center of our society today. He was joking. He doesn't hate anyone. Anyone who has watched his shows for more than 10 minutes can see that. Trying to tow the gray line of comedy. Trying to be shocking. That was his thing. He made fun of literally everyone and everything too. He didn't target anybody. Now of course what he did getting drunk and punching his producer is of course indefensible. But you completely ignored the fact that the man had just lost his mother and was deeply in pain and hadn't slept for a couple days trying to power on for top gear. That isn't an excuse for it as Clarkson said, but again it puts it in context. Frankly, what you did in this podcast is far more hateful than anything he ever said. You labeled everyone who doesn't agree with your politics as uneducated stupid simpletons. Apparently to you, that is me because I disagree with the majority of your political ideals sounds like. Because, apparently unlike you, I'm not willing to automatically hate those I disagree with I still say I'm a fan of you guys and mostly like what you're doing with donut and enjoy it, but I must say this left me angry and with a bad taste in my mouth.

It's all about the success and money in the current climate, and the self censoring, new-think paradigm won't ever be cognitively addressed by the participants because, money money money. When viewed by someone looking for an explanation for Clarkson's dickish antics they attribute malice aka racism sexism ect where just having a childish sense of humor and not caring about other people being butt hurt is the more likely explanation. Jeremy is undoubtedly an asshole, but I think making the argument he is racist or sexist is disingenuous.
