Remote-control or radio-control racing - RC, as it’s known to fans - isn’t a new phenomenon. Since its invention in 1966, there’s arguably no greater thrill for a young car nut than receiving a kickass remote control car as a gift. You may have loved crashing them together as a kid, but how much do you know about remote control cars? Where’d they come from? How fast can they go? Our subject matter is tiny, but this is a BIG episode of Past Gas.

Bro like I understand the part where you guys are doing a no camera podcast that’s fine but when you guys are referring to items and talking about stuff you guys are looking at it couldn’t be that hard to just throw up pictures of whatever you guys are talking about because y’all do it for the sponsors anyways still love the videos I watch them all thanks for them

Lol but it's just easier to do this... They get way more money and don't have to pay for a lot of editing. I feel like they should do a Patreon for this so that is ya really want video ya can pay for it to show them it's that important. I used to really care about the video and the no reference stuff, but then I just got over it. I don't think this will ever go back to it's glory days.

I just picked up a 1/14th scale trophy truck from RC Speed (Robby Gordon's company). I used to race 1/10th back in the 80s. I'm building a track in my backyard this spring. I've got a vacant 1/4 acre. PS- Team Losi all the way. I raced a JR-X 2

Always love the show!! Great topic to cover, I have a 2wd Traxxas Slash that has all the upgrades(big bore shocks, LCG chassis, lithium battery, brushless motor). It tops out at 65mph but can go faster with a change of gears. My Dad caught it in the ankle at about 40mph and he was on crutches for a few days but no broken bones. RC is definitely a hobby I’d recommend to anyone. Pretty easy to get into financially and working on them is doable after watching a few KZfaq videos. I’ve been building RC cars since the 90s and it’s definitely more plug and play nowadays. Team Losi all day.

I got Into rc when I was in school for hypo automotive. It was an awesome way to spend $300 instead of 3- 5 grand into getting into racing. We had a list and did drag racing, it was a ton of fun and cheap compared to a full car. You can learn a lot and still have competition.

This is fantastic! I spent a lot of my life in RC. The 90s for me was Tyco and then I got into Traxxas. From there I had a Losi XXCR, XXCR Kinwald edition with all Novak/Trinity/JR parts. Later on I had a Losi Mini 8Ight buddy highly modded to hit 70mph. Sold it and went to associated modding a RC10b5m to hit 70mph on 2S. Then went back to a Mini 8ightT truck for speed runs. Also have a TREX 450 heli and Blade 200QX quad.

I grew up in the 80s. What a great decade and rc cars were a big part if it. I had a Tamiya Frog and Traxxas Sledgehammer. Most of the kids I knew had one. Tamiya and Kyosho were the big players then the RC10 came along. Currently they have a lot of vintage reissue kits available which are a blast to build and run. On the other end of the spectrum are brands like Traxxas and Arrma with lipo batteries and brushless motors. They are super FAST and durable.

Video idea, make a $300 RC build off where the crew builds 1/24 scale off-road trucks and compete then next episode the trucks can be tow vehicles for 1/24 drift builds but make the budget like $700 for the drift cars.

Legend has it everyone at donut leaves the break room when Nolan walks in because they know he likes his privacy, everyday at 11:30 a.m. he has a ritual that involves eating two cans of chef boyardee raviolis by putting them onto flower tortillas and making ravioli tacos.... He knows it's shameful and embarrassing that's why they leave 😂

As an immigrant who came from a small village into usa, I feel like I've missed out on the 90s remote control car craze back in the early 2000s. I remember going to a pawn shop in town and seeing a few models for sale which were all high grade by the looks of it and cost a few hundred Dollars. I've always wanted one as a kid but wasn't smart enough to figure out how to pair up the car with the remote and did not have any money. Now that I'm an adult, I might just buy one to get me started. I also remember seeing some old dude who came over to the middle school field to fly his remote controlled air plane which was gas powered. I thought it was the coolest thing ever.

Sweet! This topic hadn't occurred to me as potential Past Gas fodder. For me, it's both a pleasant surprise and a tasty nostalgia treat. Nolan is right on the money @0:58: we never had the money for anything more than a crappy Radio Shack RC car once in a long while, but even with the cheap build and weak batteries (no lithium-ion for kids in the 1990s), there were few things that reached the level of awesome of anything with motors, servos, and a remote control. Also, I enjoyed the half-awake ad read towards the beginning of the episode, with the part about the additives for protecting the engine from damage during abnormal combustion events, "common in direct engine turbo engines."

As a guy on the Team Associated team here in Australia, you guys actually did a pretty good job of going in-depth while keeping it fun 🤘 having worked in hobby shops as well it's always funny when people would have a heart attack when they saw RTR car for like $1000, then you go and tell them that you've spent close to $40k on racing 😅 But I'm glad Nolan is actually into the sport and showed respect to us guys who race 😉

When I was 10 in 2002 I used to go to an RC club at my school. I moved a few months later and can’t remember much about the RC cars we used. Probably very cheap toy grade ones, but the teacher who ran the club was really into it so maybe they were at the good end of toy grade or the cheapest end of hobby grade. It was a good time. I wonder if I hadn’t moved schools maybe now I’d be spending way too much money on RC stuff and I’d be the Nolan of my friendship group instead of the James 🤪

Anyone interested in the hobby should check out Arrma, Team Associated, Losi, HPI Racing, Redcat, Team Corally, and Traxxas. All of these companies build legends. My picks would be the Arrma Senton/Mojave SCT's, Team Associated's RC10 SC6.2 racing kit, Losi's LMT Grave Digger, HPI's Savage, Redcat Kaiju EXT, Team Corrally Asuga, and the Traxxas Slash Ultimate Edition. Each of these trucks is capable of 50 plus mph and is highly upgradable. Thanks Donut, for talking R/C car culture.
