Have you ever heard of Amati? In the late ’80s, Mazda took a big swing and tried to create a luxury car brand. They were emboldened by the success of the Miata. But somehow, Amati never happened, and almost 400 million dollars were wasted in the process. Today on Past Gas: how did Amati become a ghost badge haunting Mazda’s dreams? Why does Mazda refuse to discuss the failed brand? How did Mazda go from zoom zoom, to doom and gloom?

Mazda has just killed off the 6 series sedan in the states and rumors state that they are planning on going upper class to compete with bmw 5 series with a rear wheel drive luxury platform. I hope they release this thing under the same name as an upper class luxury model under the Mazda nameplate.

i loved the bit at the end when you were talking about the slightly older dudes in highschool influencing you with your car tastes, I'm blessed that my highschool had some really cool cars and really cool owners. i graduated h.s. in 09' and when i was a sophomore and junior. a dude who I've remained friends with this whole time, before i knew him, he had a 240sx with a sweet origin body kit with 350z autum copper paint he and his dad painted in the garage, these twin brothers Haz and Frans who went in on a silver 2002 Impreza WRX bugeye that they were always tuning with a laptop in the parking lot and doing mods on, this dude Ben who had a Toyota SW20 with full Tom's body kit and repainted a gloss teal with a greddy exhaust, and we also had another guy with a 240sx that he dumped an SR20DET into and did a Silvia S13 fixed headlight nose swap on. there was one last guy i remember who somehow got super lucky and bought a salvaged white 2006 subaru STi that literally only needed a new hood and front bumper, he fixed it and had a super clean hawkeye STi in highschool. was actually pretty cool times thinking back on it. all played to my current taste in cars. i was absolutely captivated.

Awesome episode guys. I have previously heard this story as well, I think I saw some leaked images of the proposed car, and it looks similar to most large Japanese sedans from the late 80s, early 90s. Mazda is my favourite Japanese brand, I think they have the right balance between mass market appeal and desirability for car enthusiasts, one of the reasons for me buying my current car, a 2012 Mazda2. Completely agree with Nolan's comments about what the Japanese brands did to the rest of the industry - stealing sales from the Western manufacturers that were complacent and slow to react to the rapidly changing market and oil crises, plus forcing them to greatly lift their game in quality and reliability. Also about the free market: I don't have any knowledge of business, but if it really were a 'free market', wouldn't the survival of a car brand be reliant on the quality of their cars and how many they sell, not from support from external sources? Not saying it's necessarily good or bad, most car manufacturers receive funding from their respective governments.
