Driving is dangerous! You may think that safety measures would be a popular and easy win for the automobile industry, but it wasn’t always that way. Why would the auto industry collude to prevent important environmental pollution-control devices? Why were Americans so anti-seatbelt that, as one Michigan legislator called it, they fought for their right to fly through a windshield? Today, on Past Gas, the shockingly hard-won safety measures that the auto industry fought against.

My mom, who grew up in the 70s, used to tell me about a kid around her age who was killed in a car accident because she wasn't wearing her seatbelt when her family got in a car accident. The kids mom was in a hurry with her three kids, and naturally one of them threw a fit about wearing her seatbelt. They argued back and forth, at first her mother wouldn't move the car until she put her seatbelt on, but they were running late so she finally gave up and said "fine" and they left. I don't remember all the details, but they got into a car accident, and the child who wasn't wearing the seatbelt was ejected, her neck was broken when she hit the ground, and was killed instantly. No one else in the car was seriously injured or killed, everyone else in the car was wearing their seatbelt. That mother lived with the guilt for the rest of her life. I thought this was just a story that my mom told to scare me into always wearing my seatbelt, until we were going through some of her things from her childhood and showed me some old yellowed newspaper clippings about the kid who died in that accident. I never argued with my mom about wearing a seatbelt after that. I refuse to drive anyone in my car unless they wear their seatbelt.

I'm a firm believer in free will to do what you please. If someone doesn't want to wear a seatbelt, they're free to do so. But they must accept the results of their actions. I wouldn't be alive today if it wasn't for seatbelts. (Very bad accident in 2008) I'm an extreme seatbelter (is that a word/thing?) Like James said, even moving cars around it feels weird without seatbelts. I wear them just pulling different cars in and out of my garage.

I miss those seat belts which were attached to the door which would then strap you in nicely when you closed the door. Its so convenient. You never have to put it on yourself. Comes in handy for those who have limited movement in their shoulder and arms.

My old man still complains about seatbelts and hangs onto the one time wearing a seatbelt "would've killed him" as the reason he hates seatbelts. Apparently being a dumb kid and hooning around in a VW Bus and almost being decapitated by a barbed wire fence is reason enough to complain about seatbelts. I still don't know how much of that story is really true.

The government can require manufacturing to provide safety features. I believe it appropriate to require children to use them. That being said, adults have, and I mean have. That's not ought to have, they do possess the right to choose whether to use seatbelts and motorcycle helmets. Helmets in particular. Having ridden thousands of miles, helmets have qualities that make accidents more likely. I'd rather avoid an accident, motorcycles are inherently dangerous in traffic especially and your head is only a part of your body. Proper clothing and footwear are more important and I see idiots riding in flipflops and shorts and splitting traffic. Much more dangerous than no helmet.

I don't think people in general like being told what to do against their own will. Even if it is for their own safety and well being. If people want to fly through their windshield, why wouldn't you just let them do what they want? It makes people more skeptical when you force them to do things. Just present the evidence and statistics and let them do what they want, otherwise you will have the opposite effect when you force feed people safety....
