In the 70's-80's USSR illegally copied Wankel design and created small batch of rotary engines similar to Mazda's. They created multiple designs and tested single and 2 rotor engines in various Lada models, there even was a rotary Lada touring car in the 90's. They even designed a 3-rotor and 4-rotor prototypes but ultimately ceased all development due to low interest and crisis.

I did a project for school on the Wankel engine not too long ago and one of the things I found was that. Companies like Audi, were looking at switching to rotary engines in their cars as range extenders for when the batteries were running low or the car needed that extra little bit of power. It said they were looking at using rotary engines because with a little more RnD they could be just as reliable, they are more compact, there is less bigger moving parts, and they run a lot smoother for a more comfortable ride. Audi had already made and sold a concept car too with the rotary engine in it
