Fun fact: Doom was inspired by DnD. Back when ID was just a few guys, they had company Dungeons and Dragons sessions. In one of those sessions, a horde of demons was released upon the world. They realized that this was the perfect premise for another shooter. Many of the enemies were based on DnD monsters. The most obvious is the Cacodemon, which was inspired by a beholder and the art was taken from the head of a Astral Dreadnought.

I love how when the boss shows up, none of the players consider, even for a moment, standing up and fighting. Really reflects how the demons regard the Doom Slayer in-universe - even if they never actually run away in the actual game.
