Why You Absolutely SHOULD Consider Buying a Suzuki DRZ400S in 2022 (Response to Adventure Daily)

A while back, our friend Tanner from the Adventure Daily channel made a video entitled "Do NOT Buy This Motorcycle in 2022... DRZ400S vs CRF300L" explaining his reasoning behind not recommending the venerable Suzuki DRZ400S to dual sport riders because much more modern dual sport motorcycles like the Honda CRF300L and Kawasaki KLX300 exist and are much better options because of their lighter weight, more modern technology, six speed transmissions, and other factors.
While I don't disagree with Tanner's points about the Suzuki DRZ400 necessarily, I do disagree with his conclusion that you shouldn't consider buying a DRZ400 in 2022. In my mind, the DRZ400S is in a class of its own and should absolutely be considered along even the more modern dual sport motorcycles because of one important factor: FUN. To me, the Suzuki DRZ400 is the most fun motorcycle I've ever ridden. While it would be nice if it had fuel injection and a sixth gear, that doesn't overshadow the fact that it's just insanely fun to ride and more fun, in my opinion, than other more modern Japanese dual sport bikes.
If you're trying to decide between the Suzuki DRZ400S vs Honda CRF300L or Suzuki DRZ400S vs Kawasaki KLX300, I'd encourage you to at least heed my advice and give the DRZ400S a test ride. You might find, like I have, that it's the most fun dual sport motorcycle out there.

Fantastic breakdown and response! I appreciate the plug and all of your kind words, at the end of the day everything has its pros and cons and we like what we like. I’ve had plenty of seat time on multiple DRZ’s and just can’t get over the Dinosaur feel. Apart from 2 strokes I just gotta have FI in 2022 haha. Sure I love my vintage bikes but my argument was mainly the price and why I still think you should never pay $8k+ for an 80’s Dual Sport in this day and age. For that kind of money you can go to the dark side and get a gently used Euro bike that will outperform the pig in every category. But for a little over $6k my 300L bridges the gap with the long service intervals and I can get just enough performance out of it to be happy. But at the end of the day all that matters is getting out on the trails and having a good time. Loving the shop setup and the future is looking bright for the channel! Cheers🍻

Worlds collide! I started following Attention Deficit probably 3 or 4 years ago when you had the 250L, Tanner, since I was in the market for my first dual sport and I found your channel. Ended up buying my gf's dad's KLR650 ('06) because I couldn't pass on the deal. Now again I'm shopping for a smaller, more woods-friendly bike as that's the kind of riding I find myself doing the most. I've been loving the 300L content and a few weeks ago I started watching ALL of the DRZ content on Dork's channel. After countless hours watching YT vids on the 300L, KLX300 and now DRZ, I think I can deal with a carb one more time and am shopping for the DRZ. Thanks to both of you for putting out fantastic content! Cheers indeed

Well built drz owns a spot in the ds world no other bikes ever can. Power of a 450, service intervals of a xrl. The only reason you never warmed up to drz is because you have never made a commitment to building one. Your mods consist of bolt ons normally, unless like your Honda 450l you buy it somewhat modified. That 300 has antique, archaic suspension and requires full fork conversion and throwing shock in trash can. Which bike is 80s tech??? I don't hate on any, but that efi on your 300l,along with that welded on subframe that's made of cheese is a far cry from modern. Even the brake pedal on that 300l is made of butter....bring that 300l to one of our dual sport rides, and afterwards we can talk about who's bike lacked what. I can update you with our schedule if you wanna do something other then ride wheelies on asphalt while wearing sneakers....hope to see ya!

@@thatoneguy2756 Your a douche for being rude and are WRONG! Archaic bikes, just like gas engines for sports cars are for old people who want to be nostalgic and are exactly what companies prey on when pricing bikes! DRZ was a great choice until they stopped updating it while increasing the price year after year🤣 Because of people like you, they still have the carb, oil in the frame and oil changes are a bitch haha. If your going to spend 9k OTD for a dinosaur, then definitely spend an extra 2k and get the Beta!!! Otherwise the 300L is the best choice in its class and adventure daily is correct and from what I've seen, he has been riding since he was a kid and has plenty of experience off road.

Tanner instead of spending $1000 to replace the CRF300L front forks, I've found a much cheaper way to upgrade the existing forks. I have a CRF100F and as you know, the front forks are lame a f.. After replacing the stock fork oil with heavy duty fork oil, it made a big difference in the stiffness of the front forks. Now I rarely bottom out. You have to experiment with the volume of oil to meet your personal weight. Try it, you might be pleasantly surprised. The rear shock on the 300L will need to be upgraded. Clearly Honda meant the CRF300L to be mostly street riding.

I agree with many of your points. Though you have missed talking about how the drz is a nerfed platform and stock it does intact suck. But it Beggs to have 15 more horses added for very little money. Doing so adds a whole new level of fun and puts it in a new league.

I got my drz when I was 15. I’m 30 now and still have the same 06 with 23k on the clock. Actually just started actually doing mods this past year. 3x3, jet, exhaust, wide seat, different ratio. Just with these mods it feels like a whole new bike to me. Can’t believe I waited. I always joke that I’ll get buried with this bike. And the best part is I’ve only ever done oil changes, brakes, and a bunch of tires. Not once has anything ever gone wrong with this bike.

Better yet, 20 years of people blowing money on aftermarket parts just to get them for near free when they sell. This is where the gold is. Big bore? Wide ratio transmission? Upgraded forks and suspension? Custom exhaust and updated carb? Both road tires and off road for SM swap? Thousands spent in there. All for the price of a used DRZ.

I think the reason people like the drz, is that it's is a blank template, a do it yourselfers delight, run it as a supermoto, and setup the springs and shim stacks for carving up the some corners, convert it to kickstart only and with subframe chop and plastic gastank and take it to the woods or even a motorcross track, put on a rally fairing form yenkro and a gearing change and with some luggage and it is an adventure bike that will go with ease where any Africa twin will struggle (as long as its not highway). Big bore stroker kit, hot cams, exhaust and fcr carb (with hopefully a qualified dyno tuner) and you've got your self a 50hp reliable-ish wheelie beast. In that way the drz is unique, with every other bike you get what you get and you ride it, and there is something to be said about that, but for those who just cant leave well enough alone there is no better option out there.

Nailed it. As a 50+ XR400 owner and someone who has logged some miles on the DRZ400, I can relate to all you said. Eventually, all will recognize the positive aspects of bikes such as the DRZ. When the "hare scrambles" and weekend motocrossing get replaced with " I'd like to see what's on the other side of that mountain.", the DRZ will make perfect sense.

Couple of things; 1) I love carburetors. I grew up with carbs, I'm familiar and comfortable with carbs and I never have any serious problems with carbs. 2) in the 6th gear discussion, I think I would prefer like a granny gear below 1st rather than an overdrive past 5th on my DR650

Carbs are way better and I could careless about having fuel injection (then you need a 'tuner') to mod the ECU. I got a DRZ400S and DR650 it will run circles around the Honda 300L and run 75 mph no problem.

You have to admit a jet kit is a whole lot cheaper than a programmer. Sure I like efi, but it's easier and more cost effective to get more power out of a drz vs a crf300 or klx300.

This video made my day! As a subscriber and frequent watcher of both your channels this was a perfect, respectful response. Also, good choice of bourbon. I got some Woodford Reserve for Christmas that I've been enjoying. I briefly owned a DRZ400S that had been absolutely thrashed. I tried to save it but failed. I recently owned a CRF450L but it wasn't right for me. I was really struggling between DRZ400S or CRF300L to replace the 450L but a CRF300L Rally ABS was available locally and I pulled the trigger. There's now a well-sorted used DRZ near me that I may pickup if the seller will negotiate so I can really compare the two. Great points all the way around and all great motorcycles in their own right. I've been making some videos of my own providing feedback about them as well. Thank you for the excellent video!

Four carbs, all have to have float bowl levels set/raised/lowered, main jet adjustment, airscrews, Pilot jets, etc....I got really good at pulling a bank of carbs and going to town. Once I got my first Vstrom with fuel injection, it was as if the skies opened up and I felt the rays of sunshine for the first time..........never going back to carbs!

Good overview of both bikes. It was nice to hear from someone that has ridden both extensively. I think I feel the same way Tanner probably does. I get why people like the DRZ, it’s just not what I would choose for myself at this point in time. My interests and needs are weird though as a shorter rider that mostly want to cruise on fire type roads and mild to moderate trails. What I really want is a durable Japanese 690 Enduro R with a lower seat height, which pretty much doesn’t exist lol. So, I have been looking at the new KLR 650, which looks huge in person, the KTM 390 Adventure, and the EXC-F and FE 500 bikes. I dig the crossover thing between channels though. It was fun.

I started DS on the predecessor DR350, and my logic was a great beginner bike that holds value. Rode so much of the western USA…fire roads, highways, single track. Beat the snot out of it and it never let me down, ever. 12 k miles later sold it for more than I paid. My point is a DRZ is a great starter bike that if you don’t like it in a few years, you sell it for your next bike. Also, I prefer Old Forester. PS At 61yo a Husky FE501 is now my favorite DS bike.

I will pick up a goog set of of road tires/rims so really get the dual sport factor in. The price really is not that bad compared to any of the adventure bikes and you do pay less for the KLX 300, which is less cc's which to me is that trade off. I second your opinion. After 20+ years of riding and owning more than 15 motorcycles, I bought into the hype, ordered a 300L Rally. Riding it home from the dealership I knew it wasn't going to cut it for me. I sold it with 171 miles on it. After owning 2 DRZ400's, (one street legal DRZ400E, and one DRZ400S) I felt like that new Honda bike was gutless, and felt like a child's toy. I'm 6ft and 180lbs, and my next bike will be my 3rd DRZ. Lol 😂 you got on it dude. Fun to watch Vid as per usual. I too owned a 2005 DRZ400 and it quite possibly was the best over all bike I have ever owned. My biggest gripe was our terrible quality gasoline here in Calif. would clog the idle jet if the bike sat. Even when I'd drain the bowl the residue of gas left in that jet would cake up and eventually clog. It is a pain in the butt to have to keep on top of that. I also live off hwy 101 and I felt like I was abusing the engine riding it for and length of time. After about 20,000 miles it was ready for a complete rebuild and I ended up selling it. Most of the ones I see now for sale have 10,000 plus miles and are $3,500 to $4,500 and are more than I'm willing to spend on one. Right now I am loving my new 2022 KLR650 and I have a 2015 BMW R1200RT for distance pleasure.

You guessed right, I know what you're talking about. You nailed this response! I agree that the price of a new DRZ is too high. I watched his video a while back and am glad you did this response because anyone on the fence needs to hear it. I just went through the decision last summer... Klx300, crf300l/rally, drz400. I went with a gently used drz400 with all major mods already done. At $3800, no brainer. So much fun and the right choice for my 6'3" 215lbs body. Besides, after riding both crf300l and klx300 I would choose the klx300. This class of motorcycle is great and if anyone out there is unsure, just pick one up and ride the hell out of it. It will absolutely be some of the most fun you can have. Lastly, good choice of bourbon! While it is not my favorite sipper, I feel that its spicy note is perfect with a little ginger ale. Cheers brother!

Agree. One of the reasons I watch is that you like Drz400s. BTW, Everide also prefers Drz400s over Crf300l. Which is just not enough bike for Everide or me. 1st, what is the 'modern' claim? Just FI and dash? So what? The suspension is lacking on CRF. No 'modern' suspension. Watch Ryan Fortnine regarding FI vs carb. He says it's not that much better. What else is modern? Brakes? No. Wheels? No. 6th gear is no advantage. Even AdventureDaily admits on his 300L vs 450L vid that the 300L is a 'street bike'. So the Drz beats it's butt in the dirt. But because of power and top speed, 400s also beats 300L by far on the street. The 'modern' argument just doesn't fly. The Drz powerplant and suspension is every bit as modern as 300L. FI not withstanding. I don't expect the FI provides any better throttle response on 300L. If you want a fancy dash, put on a Trailtech. I put in a LED headlight. Whoppee! If you don't count my opinion, ask Everide if he will be trading for a 300L, LOL. It's just not enough bike. Period.

I’ve had 2 DRZ 400 S models and a DRZ SM. The SM seemed geared very short, and wasn’t a highway bike at all. The others were ok on the road. In fact, I rode one of them for several miles at a sustained 90 mph trying to stay with a friend on his Road King. I had to switch to reserve at 94 mph while passing a slower vehicle when the bike started running out of fuel (no fuel gauge). It wouldn’t go far on the little fuel tank at those speeds. I rode the Hatfield McCoy trail in WV with my son on the back, and I’m no off -road legend by any means. It just went where I pointed it and had no problem negotiating the trails even two up. I think the DRZ is an excellent all round dual sport, and if a CRF 300 is better, it must be a heck of a bike.

Great review. I was sold on the CRF300L until another channel took it on the freeway up a slight incline and pegged, it maxed out at 70 mph. The point of a dual sport is to at least be safe on the road and in the dirt, and that's just not safe. I know you can do some thing to increase hp but it will never have the torque and hp of the DRZ. And the additional fun factor makes me want the DRZ even more.

Great response video - I think I agree with everything you said except availability of used DRZs. In the areas I've looked in Oregon and Arizona, there aren't many of them. So it's forcing me to look at the CRF250L, which there do seem to be more of.

I bought my new DRZ 400 in 2020 and I love it. Last month I bought a 2024 KLX 300 so I could compare the two. I enjoy riding the DRZ much better mostly because the DRZ has so much more torque and power. If I only could have one I would pick the DRZ as it just feels better and is more enjoyable to ride.

Thanks for sharing great info, I’m seriously looking at buying a DRZ-400S I’ve been interested in owning a dual sport like forever, I’ve watched pretty much all the video’s (on U-tube) alternate model options etc, I keep referring back to the DRZ I like the power to weight ratio, heavy suspension, reliability etc, I’m going to test ride one within the next couple of weeks and go from there

My first bike was a 2000 drz400s, took the advice of a veteran racer and re sprung my bike. Made a noticeable difference in feel off road. In 2020 I bought a 2019 Drz400sm from a dealer that had it marked down 1000 off. Now I getting ready to have new springs and gold valves from race tech installed.

Fun content to watch and contemplate. Thank you DR. :) I think that bikes like the DRZ and the T7 are more relevant than ever. So many manufacturers are adding electronic gizmos to bikes to justify pricing without considering how useful all those gizmos actually are to riders. I've considered the AT, R1, and several other bikes as possible purchases, and decided that I have no use for the rider aids and all the tech on those machines. I simply don't need or want the tech. The tech doesn't add joy to my riding experience, it only adds complexity. Everthing new and techy isn't necessarily great. Last November I picked up a 2022 DRZ400S. In my opinion the build quality can be summarized by the feel of the gas cap ... all metal, stout, substantial, and beautifully made. This bike prioritizes strength over weight. The sub-frame is beautifully crafted out of aluminum, the overall fit and finish is excellent, and the engine is a joy. I don't think it's overpriced because it's made with modern metallurgy, fabrication, and parts just like any other bike manufactured today. The only thing that is older are the blueprints. The lack of 6th doesn't matter to me becuse no dual sport is made for cruising for any extend distance, none are comfortable over 55 mph, DRZ vary comfortably breaks every speed limit where I live without the 6th, and it's actually nice not to have to shift through so many gears. My perspective is informed by prior ownership of a 250L, and I currently own an excf, a T7, and an R6 ... all wonderful bikes with their strengths and weakness. I would be very interested to hear your opinion on the prevalence of tech on motorcycles and how useful the tech is. Keep the content coming.

I agree with you about the tech stuff. I have no need for it as far as I can tell. The one worry I have with having just bought a Honda CRF300L Rally is a failed tech part. The one thing gives me comfort is that Honda is the most dead pan reliable machine out there.

Here in Australia, we are lucky to purchase DRZ400E new. They are more powerful then the S model and significantly more powerful then the 300L. A nicely tuned carb has a better feel then the new on/off Euro 5 fuel injection systems of today. The DRZ suspension is fully adjustable and when correctly sprung is way superior to the 300L. All these light weight dual sports are terrible on the freeway as they get blown around. After market parts are plentiful on the DRZ and the engine has so areas for improvement with big bore kits and wide ratio gearbox. When the zombie apocalypses comes around in the not to distance future, it is the DRZ that I want to be on....

I have been driving a 1996 DR650 since 2002. The motorcycle has over 20,000 trouble free miles at this point. I like the lack of water cooling and the easy to adjust screw and lock nut valve adjustments. I also like the torque of a 650cc engine. I would like a lighter bike for off-road usage at times but even in the new 300s aren’t that much lighter than my 650.

I turned 72 years of age last July and was finding it getting harder to lift a leg over the bike. Consequently, last winter I used the factory procedure to lower the DR650 4 cm. I very rarely go off road and even lowered, the DR650 has more ground clearance then many dual sports or adventure motorcycles. Off hand, I don't think that there is a factory method for lowering the suspension on a DRZ400S ...

Its nice to have an older style bike still available like the DRZ. Not everyone wants a mx bike with a headlight. It just kind of stinks that there are not any true woods bikes anymore like the Xr, kdx or klx300r (old version). I understand that tech changes and time to upgrade etc, but the older style bikes were great because if you wanted to go easy or sit they were comfortable, yet if you want to hammer they went! My XR can be ridden hard but if i want to putt around and sit , i can do it and not feel every bump or have to move all the time because of the stiff seat. I actually currently have a 2022 on order as i type this up lol. Price is insane i agree but i want an older style bike. Everything else is too mellow or harsh. The mellow bikes have terrible suspension with no travel. Im glad they still sell it and cant wait to get mine! Great vid 🍻

Fantastic breakdown and response! X2 :-) I had a first gen CRF250L then sold it for a DRZ400S. Man I don't miss the little red pig. I really enjoy the DRZ. I watched AD's vid raving about the CRF300L over the DRZ. He certainly planted a doubt in my rational mind with his valid points. I'm so glad you sat on the other side of the scale. Yeah cheap shot for skinny AD. Joke aside you convinced me to keep the DRZ for a couple of extra years. The marginal gains of FI and 6th gear isn't enough with the CRF300l to move away from the DRZ. Like you I'm not welling to spend twice the price and 3 times the maintenance on a "modern" high performance dual sports. Let see what Royal Enfield will do with their Himalayan 450 and /or see if Yamaha will come up with a bigger successor of the WR250R. Until then the DRZ is sill the closest thing to my dream Unicorn. Thank you DitR for this excellent video.

Great points about the DRZ, and I agree with everything your said about it. The one thing I would add, is that it's not an adventure bike, it's a dual sport. The only drawback that I feel that it has is the ability for sustained highway speeds for long distances. Yes, I know it will do 75-80 mph, but I wouldn't feel comfortable doing that for long distances, say 100 miles or more. That kind of limits the DRZ for long highway trips. For example, I would like to do the Idaho BDR (I live in Washington), but to get to it, I would have really long stretches of interstate travel. I would need to trailer my DRZ to Idaho to do that type of adventure. I guess if it had a sixth gear, it probably wouldn't be an issue. I've considered putting a smaller rear sprocket on to help get the rev's down while doing 75 mph, but haven't done that yet. That would most likely help it's higher speed performance, but you would lose some of that low end grunt that makes the DRZ so great off road. For me, owning a DRZ means I need two motorcycles, but is that a drawback : )???

My white 2018 DRZ400S has upgraded aesthetics with 9-lb weight reduction from upper part of bike. My DRZ looks like a totally modern bike: new motocross front fender, new lighter headlight faring and tail tidy. Just added a new gripper seat - thanks Tanner. Anti-Gravity Battery was big weight reduction. Performance is bone stock. I have plenty of power and instantaneous throttle response with quiet stock exhaust. The weight reduction made a huge difference in handling, making it more nimble and flickable - DRZ no longer feels "Top Heavy". I could further reduce the weight by replacing with plastic tank and after market exhaust, but I'm very satisfied with the handling now. Dual sports need some weight when riding on the street and I'm a sucker for quiet exhaust - never understood loud obnoxious pipes on a dual sport. Also added bar risers, which made standing up more comfortable. I ride to top of Mauna Loa (11,000 ft) once per week with absolutely no problems with the carburator. I have instantaneous throttle response at 11,000 ft even when I goose the throttle. The 20 mile road leading to Mauna Loa has so many curves and elevation changes, I call it my private paved motocross track 😆. The biggest difference between the CRF300L and DRZ400S is the suspension. DRZ400S has adjustable suspension with over 11" of travel front & rear with 12" of ground clearance - these are motocross specs. DRZ400S is basically a street legal dirt bike. To see what a stripped down DRZ can do off-road, check out video below: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/e56mdteVqa_bhIU.html

In the Colorado dual-sport community, everyone I meet either has owned one, ridden one, and/or has good memoires on a DR-Z. Even if you don't have a DR-Z in your stable, everyone I know is secretly rooting for this bike to simply exist and stay alive ...It may be one of the most beloved bikes in the off-road community with it's simplicity, reliability and fun-loving reputation that STILL has serious off-road chops paired with a competent rider...it really is the AK-47 of the dual-sport world. Knowing that it's still selling in 2023 is like having an old friend that's still there and that you can still pick up a good conversation with like no time has passed. It's simplicity and lack of features actually appeals to many of us since it makes you FURTHER engage with your environment and your actual riding experience, rather than your instrument cluster. I could wax poetic about this bike, but everything has already been said time and time again. At 23 years old now, very few dual-sports if ANY have been produced long enough to actually inspire and get the NEXT generation up on 2 wheels in it's same configuration since 2000, and that's pretty damn cool. Whenever I decide to retire my 2007, I will hopefully buy my next DR-Z new in the years to come, but I have plenty of adventures to be had before then :)

I have a DRZ400E 2010 model. I was looking for a bike to ride in long distance rallies. At the time I could spend about 50 % more and ride a KTM690, or buy a Suzuki 650 or 400. Having ridden dirt bikes ( mainly 250s) in enduros and having owned a 650 Suzuki previously, my thought process was to go with the 400 and modify it to my needs. I had owned KTMs before too and I went for the reliability of the Suzuki. What did I do to it? 1) ACT wide ratio gear set 2) Stiffer suspension both ends. I recently had the rear suspension lowered internally to drop the seat height ( 40 mm/2 ") 3) 28L Safari tank 4) Small windscreen 5) bash plate and radiator guards 6) Seat Concepts seat When I retired in 2015 I bought a Tiger 800 XCx and rode it across Australia for a few years until we were closed down for the Pandemic. I loved that bike, but it is a big bike that like all larger ADV bikes has some fragility when dropped. I decided that the Tiger needed a new home, so I brought the DRZ out from under the covers in my shed. I had a big smile on my face after the first ride! It is my go anywhere bike.

Fun is why we ride these so the DRZ is hard to beat! I have a deposit on a new one here in Maine and am looking forward to getting it. I have ordered some add-ons that should help with comfort. I called over 20 dealers to find a Honda 300L and couldn't even get my name on a list really. I think what is being overlooked a little here in your review is how important suspension is...i'm a heavier rider and to get the 300L to perform the way I would want it to was going to add at least 2k to the price. Fuel injection is nice but not that important. KTM is too much $ for something i plan to abuse a bit. My 2 cents. Great review and thanks!

I just bought a new one, i found that for one buying anything else would be a hassle and would have to go used which I think is the better choice BUT this was my first bike ever and I wanted something brand new that I could experience the entire process and feeling of the bike from stock, partly a personal preference but also some thought into that. But my main buying point was your comment about it being a tank, I did my research and tried to find something that was durable, natural (no abs or extra bullshit I want to learn how I feel is the right way) and if the inevitable happens and I need to replace or fix parts it would be easy to acquire them and easy to work on them myself. Yes I know I could have gotten a bike with a lot more features and modern mechanics like fuel injection haha but after purchasing and getting 100 miles in Im still happy with it and the after market is all over the place you can make it what you want.

My wife owns the CRF250L and I have the DRZ 400. Both bikes are pretty heavily modified. You are right on with your summation of fun factor. Twist the throttle on the DRZ and all you can do is smile and the suspension is much more tunable. I lowered the suspension on the CRF so my wife is comfortable with it but she had a chance to take the DRZ out where I could catch her when she slowed down. When she got off she was doing nothing but smiling and said I get it I want more horsepower! DRZ hands down!

I had a E model for a few years, even raced it in GNCC/Enduro. If I may make a suggestion to drastically improve your S model: 1. Add a good free flowing slip on and get a used E header 2. Open the airbox a little, not too much(3×3) 3. For the S model: Spend the money and get a FCR carb. It's worth every penny and was OE on the E models. 4. I put a RM125 fork and triples on mine, along with the springs and valves(shock to match) for my weight. Best bang for the buck. I sold my E, as soon as the guy left with it I knew I made a mistake. Now I have a XR600R(always wanted a big air cooled honda single).

I bought a DRZ this past summer based on a couple opinions on KZfaq, yours being one. I have zero issues owning things that are carbureted, I prefer them for simplicity. Like you said, I start it, put on my helmet and gloves and it’s good to go. 6th gear would be nice, but far from a deal breaker. Quite honestly, it keeps my cruising speed at 55-60 mph where if I had 6th I’d most likely be riding too fast. Seat height is my one complaint, but I have a very short inseam…

Another great review Dorkster. I to am old (64) and not as svelte as I used to be, but with more off road experience. I owned a DRZ400 for a year and really liked a lot about it. It's a great all around DS bike. What I hated was the front end was really vague and no amount of sag adjustment/tuning could get the front end to stay where I put it. I crashed so many times just from washing the front end out and boy, picking that pig up several times a day wears an old guy out. To be clear, I'm no expert level rider, just a solid "C" level enduro rider. Finally gave up and traded it for 2013 KTM 500EXC. I'll take the additional maintenance for a bike that I can trust the handling with. A couple minor suggestions, what is your first name? I hate referring to a seemingly good guy as "Dork". Second, in your neck of the woods, I'd suggest Pendelton as a great bourbon in the vein of Bullet! Take care man, hope to meet you in person some day...

You can definitely tell the difference with a carburetor but if you're used to a carburetors you know how to deal with it and it's part of the fun. For those of us that just want to fix it ourselves. I have ridden dirt bikes for years and this feels so good. Perfect ergonomics for sitting up straighter and having a more dirt bike Motocross feel. I don't do much highway travel over 65 mph and this gets there fast and feels good at 65 mph. It feels rough at 75 but can go 90 if you want to blow your shit up 😆 but seriously this is a fun bike. Light weight. Easy to ride. Extremely simple. You can't go wrong with it in 2022. If you don't need highway speeds daily then this is your go to for the road. I will be getting the Offroad version in May or June so I will have best use for them without the hassle of switching tires etc. Plus the bikes are setup differently for supermoto than the dual sport setups. Love this rig so far.!

I have a 19 KLX250 and I like it and I have never ridden a DRZ-400. I did think about buying one when I bought my KLX, but the price was the deciding factor. I am 57 and am used to carbs and I agree that having fuel injection over a carb is overrated. It is nice that I don't have to choke it and warm it up, but that isn't an issue with me. I may still get a DRZ at some point. Actually would like to try the Supermoto. Would like to see you compare the 650 versions to each other.

Clearly you should know that KTM makes the best dual sport and adventure bikes… ;) I have to say that now because I own one. Now that that’s out of the way, I agree with you. The DRZ is the happy place in the dual sport range. It has more power, and better suspension, compared to the 250 and 300’s and is cheaper to buy and maintain compared to the 450L’s and 500 EXC type bikes. The aftermarket is huge and very inexpensive. I never found it to be terrible on the road/highway, but freeway is not real fun. It’s a great all around dual sport and should definitely still be considered in 2022 even when compared to the newer, more modern offerings.

He has drunk the orange Kool-aid! 🤣 Seriously, an oil change on my 500 takes ~10 minutes? Worthwhile sacrifice for wheelie ripping, tire shredding, hooliganism! Also agreed with Dork about the DRZ vs CRF vs KLX. I've ridden them all and the DRZ is the best one hands down. If you like torque, good suspension, ease of maintenance, and bolting on fun mods! The small bore bikes just don't do it for me and that's my preference. If you own one and love it, good on ya!

You guys sed it just like I would. That saved me from a lot of tipping. Thanks guys. DRZ is the way to go if your are advanced and the smaller one’s would be bet for a beginner. Thanks Dork and guys for all your information and knowledge. Thanks for sharing your time and videos with us.

I got 2021 and I love everything about it. I live in the Mohave dessert and it's the only bike I fully trust to get me anywhere I need to go especially in the 120° heat. Never skips a beat. The only thing I could ask for is a 6th gear. Other than that I have no complaints.

Yesterday It was 50/50 between a new CRF300l or a DRZ400E.. Went with the DRZ and couldn’t be happier. It was also the second to last new DRZ in New Zealand ever so I not only got a new bike but a legendary piece of history 🥲

I had a 2005 DRZ 400s that I bought new in 05 for 5300 bucks. Absolutely loved it! I put a full exhaust on it and did the air box mods and re jetted the carb and it woke it right up. Removed some stuff to lighten it up. One of the most fun bikes I have ever owned. Great all around street legal trail bike. I sold when I lost my job in 09 and a couple years later bought a new 2011WR 450. The WR out performs the drz in pretty much every category but I’m gonna go ahead and say this: at 44 years old the WR is WAY to much bike now. She is a fire breather and I always am a little on edge with her. In comparison the DRZ was much more predictable and just an easy laid back ride in the trails. I would definitely own another DRZ. My biggest complaints the DRZ needs a better more modern set of forks and it could be lighter. I’m currently looking into a tenere 700 the WR just does not get rode as much being it’s not fully street legal and have not got around to trying to make it legal. I sat on a tenere and fell in love. I am getting more into adventure and light trail riding these days so it’s starting to make more sense. But would not hesitate to buy a nice used DRZ if a good deal came my way.

I was on the fence about getting the DRZ400 or the 300L. I had a 2018 DRZ400 and it had an amazing motor. Yeah, the 5 speed gearbox sucked but I never rode it on the highway so no problem. I like to ride off road more than on and the DRZ was a very capable off road motorcycle. There was no hill it would not climb. It's motor has amazing power. Suspension was excellent. It was a very top heavy motorcycle which was one of it's downfalls. Well, I walked into a Honda dealers showroom and he just finished pushing out a brand new 2019 300L abs. The only bike in the whole showroom! I bought it on the spot. I've owned it a month and it's a great motorcycle. The motor and gearing are spot on out of the crate. The suspension is big time lacking over the DRZ and some time before summer I will order up a Race Tech shock and fork spring not that I need it but want it! That still only put's my total cost at $6500 and that's still a bargain. I was influenced by Adventure Daily's video on why he picked the 300L. I've owned KTM dual sports (350 and 250) and they are dirt bikes with blinkers. There like 5/95 biased and where not fun to ride on the road. But I digress. Like Adventure Daily I want a bike that is fun. Lets me ride to the trails and then back home with absolutely close to zero maintenance. So this is my take on each bike: DRZ: If your taller than six foot and greater than 200 lbs and like to do more difficult off road riding go with the DRZ. I'm six foot, 200 lbs and I am definitely pushing the upper limits for the 300L for this type of riding. I could go anywhere the boys on KTM's were going on the DRZ. It is a very capable motorcycle. 300L: If your 6 foot or under and weigh less than 200 lbs and just want a bike to ride on the road and easy to moderate trails go with the 300L. You won't regret it. I love mine. That sixth gear is soooo sexy! Both bikes are extremely low maintenance and fun! Buy what fits you size and riding style.

Is that why, the klx is better for some, hmm. So I'm 150lb , 5'7..... having 50lb less and a small frame for wind resistance, would get me to what you experience on a drz400? Being your 200lb 6ft? If so it totally makes sense now, hard to navigate which bike to get from so many different thoughts. I'm getting my moto license in 4 weeks , I'm looking for a bike 300cc-400c at the moment
