Of all the awesome dual sport motorcycles available, the Suzuki DRZ400S and the Honda CRF250L consistently rank among the best. Basically any new dual sport rider will end up having to consider the Suzuki DRZ400S vs Honda CRF250L as part of their dual sport motorcycle purchasing decision. I'm lucky enough to own both the CRF250L and the DRZ400 and I've spent the last few months riding both and compiling my thoughts on the classic Honda CRF250L vs Suzuki DRZ400 debate.
Fortunately, they are both amazing, reliable, and capable dual sport bikes. You really can't go wrong with the CRF vs DRZ, no matter which choice you make. In the end, the DRZ400 ends up being the more capable bike, but there are significant concerns about the lack of 6th gear and fuel injection, both of which the Honda CRF250L has. I've loved both bikes, but the 250l is definitely the more beginner friendly of the two, while the DRZ400 is the bike with the most room to grow into in the long run.
DRZ400s vs CRF250L, the sequel: • Honda CRF250L vs Suzuk...

I rode a crf250l in the Australian bush it went everywhere did it 100% sport on would go up 97% of any hill using the mid range power it would not let u down . The weight of the bike is only in your head . Momentum is your friend to keep u moving over the ground when in any thing tricky. It's got enough ground clearance to pop over any average log on the trail . With the 13 tooth front sprocket it's enough. Low down . Never under estimate these little bikes yes your not jumping rocks but it well get u home with a smile on your face every time . Who needs to spend big $$$$ for miles of smiles .

Your height and strength matter. If you are over 6ft and fit get a DRZ, under 6 ft get a 250L. If you're riding 20 miles on rode to then ride trails a 250L may be better. If mostly offroad a DRZ is better.

Dork, I also have both bikes. The DRZ for me and the CRF for my beginner son. I have been riding dirt bikes since the 70's and consider myself as a good intermediate rider as my son has rode for two years now. I totally agree with your comparison with each bike but don't be afraid of the carburetor on the DRZ. More than likely it will last many many years and if it does fail it's super easy to work on. I feel the biggest difference between both bikes is absolutely the low end tractor torque of the DRZ that makes it soooo much fun to ride....Both bikes are great but like you said one is just better for the type of rider you are......Great video.

I had about 7 years of street riding experience (on 600cc bikes mostly). And a month ago I bought a brand new crf250l. I was afraid that it might be a bit too slow. But in fact, it pulls fine. I'm happy with it. Seat height and suspension is perfect, for me. My weight is 65kg and I'm 170cm short.

I’ve gone from road riding to the DRZ400 in a weird shift and I love the thing. To date my riding history is a cbr125, ninja 250 (weirdly attached to that bike), 1998 GSXR SRAD 600, then 2006 GSXR600 and now moved to the DRZ400 as my first off-road bike. It’s now the only bike I own and for me it’s an absolute hoot. I’ll be straight in saying the seat height gets a lot of getting used to- but once you get over that, this single is so much fun. For a 400cc (which I expected to feel pretty tame), it has lots of pull and has- at least with and FMF exhaust- a sportsbike feel to the top end. Highly recommend as a short distance motorbike with an off-road capability which outstrips me. On Salisbury Plain right now and I couldn’t be happier with the bike. I’ll be interested to ride the CRF300L, but I honestly can’t see myself shifting this bike anytime soon- the engine is a gem. Ed

Another great video! As a new rider at 55 years old, I have found your videos to be both inspiring and a big help. My only experience before selecting my first bike was the 2 day MSF basic riding course on a KLX250S and sitting on some bikes in showrooms. After much deliberation between the CRF250L and DRZ400S I went with the 2020 DRZ400S which I was able to get for $900 below MSRP. At 5’9”, 160lbs and 32” inseam I was concerned the DRZ would be to tall and planned to get a lower seat but I have found the bike to be fine and very forgiving. Of course I don’t know any better due to my lack of experience and I may regret my deicision but so far I have been having a blast. I do think the CRF250L is a great bike and in addition to the advantages you outlined I also thought that being able to get ABS for on-road use was another thing in it’s favor.

Another great video! I have both bikes also and agree with your comments and summary! Here's my two cents as a casual 50 year old mainly dirt road rider: I don't notice any negative issues with the carb on the DRZ, mine starts, runs and idles flawlessly. I had to lower the DRZ using links and then I bought a stiffer rear spring. (Short legs...) Now that the bikes are the same height, I usually pick the CRF if I am planning to be on the pavement or it's a longer ride. I pick the DRZ if I am going to be more off road or on the trails. If i had to pick one bike, it would be the DRZ. Can you imagine a DRZ400 with a 6-speed trans.... :-)

I bought a 2015 CRF250L as my first trail bike (I own a Tiger 800 as well but wanted a smaller moto to learn about dirt). It came with a 13T from sprocket and FMF power core exhaust. All I can say is it pulls strong and nice torque (might be due to the mentioned mods) has a nice "brap" , and brings a smile to my face anytime I pull the throttle. Never thought a 250 could be so fun. Thinking about getting a larger gas tank adding soft bags and doing some WA BDR's on it

I've owned both and I'm really enjoying the 2016 CRF250L I'm 40 510 200 pounds and I'm pretty impressed with it. I've owned a couple DRZ400s , fun and has nice power. I don't know why though the drz felt so much heavier (probably seat height). I also have a 2004 crf250r and loving it right now. I go back and found 250r 250l lately. My 450 I just sold was great but too much power in the mountains and dirt/marble rocky, type roads. Conclusion, I'm really enjoying the 250s right now. Thanks for the video

Thanks for your thoughtful insights. I am an older rider (50+) with about 180,000 road miles under my belt (BMW R75/5). I am gravitating toward the Yamaha XT250 for local riding on both paved and logging roads in my home state of Maine. I prefer air-cooled machines that are lightweight and easy to maintain. Suzuki has the engine metallurgy down pat, but the DR-Z400s is a bit much for me at my age. I like your channel and I am a new subscriber. Keep up the good work!

Your comparison is fair and well thought out. I like what you said near the end about the CRF250L being the perfect bike for the rider you were, but the DRZ400 being the perfect bike for the rider you are now. Also interesting point about the feel of the CRF250L with the weight and balance. I feel the same way when comparing it to my much heavier DR650. The DR doesn't feel as tippy/unbalanced. Not to say that the CRF250L is overly top-heavy or anything...but, yeah. I know what you mean there. Great, informative video!

@@mbailey802 yep, keep in mind the 250L is undersprung for the avg person so factor in suspension costs and the factory stiffer wrr starts looking cheaper. If you're under 170 it'll probably work fine though (the 250L). I'll tell you now if you want a 320lb bike go with the drz or the dr650, the drz weighs the same as the 250L but it'll suck less on highways. Dr650 is 40lbs heavier but at the same time I can cruise at 80 with a full week camping setup all day long.

Great video for shoppers trying to decide. For seasoned riders there is no comparison. The DRZ 400 is far superior and the Showa suspension is the best in the industry. The CRF 250 feels like a heavy underpowered mini bike compared to the DRZ. To make the DRZ even better, just drop 2 teeth off the rear sprocket for super smooth highway riding but still with plenty of low end tractor pulling torque. The DRZ is absolutely bullet proof. The DRZ carb is an advantage in my opinion and will never leave you stranded vs. the CRF electronic fuel injection.

I have been riding 2 stroke 250 motocross bikes for 25 years so when I decided 2 months ago to buy a dual sport I knew I didn’t want a 4 stroke 250, it would be too gutless. So I went with the DRZ to get the 400 and honestly it is also lacking in power big time but is still fun. I think because I ride 2 stroke dirt bikes, a Honda CBR600, and a Harley V-Rod I am accustomed to much more power and speed. The DRZ is maneuverable and relaxing to just putt around on, I don’t regret buying it for something new and different.

Last winter I wanted a 'lighter' dualsport to add to my 07 R1200GSA. I test drove a CRF250L Rally...bought a DR650. For me I have an hour to get to ORV parks so the power on a 250L wouldn't be enough for my 260lb frame.

Love my CRF for where it takes me and how easily it does everything I want it to ❤️ As a life long Suzuki fan I’d love the DRZ more......but as a short arsed 5’7” on a daily ‘off road’ basis I think it’d maybe be an issue? I have ridden the DRZ and loved it......but that was on flat ground.....nothing ‘technical’......guess I’ll stick with the Honda 🤗

would you have a sprocket upgrade recommendation for the drz, that will make tops speeds more comfortable to ride? I guess without compromising too much low end, slower rpm power? curious if there is a happy medium between that 6th gear, and a new sprocket.. thx!

Just bought a 2019 DRZ400e here in the Ozzie desert.....nice forks though I have yet to balance between from and rear....I do look for an extra gear on the road....it does have an odd feeling a fuel starvation from time to time but only on the rough (could be a quirk on my bike that I need to sort out..?..or it could be my riding style) Engine chews rocky up hills - heaps of torque. Handles well.

Great video ! I appreciate the logic and "feel" that you used to describe these two bikes and how to choose. I think I'm in-between right now. One of my considerations is that I like to take mine camping (glamping) ... and want to ride 2-up with my wife. Does either one have a seat advantage for (very tame) back-road / dirt-road riding with a passenger ? (I used to have a CRF250L ... regrettably sold it ... and now picked up a CRF230M (with 60/40 knobbies) ... and it's a heap of fun ... for one rider. Looking at CRF250L / DRZ400S / maybe DR650. Any thoughts ? KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK ! JT in GA

And, if you gear the DRZ to 14 / 47 or more you'll get better control. The stock 44 on the back doesn't give you control until you're between 9 and 16 mph. You'll want good control at about 7 mph.

Completely agree that the power and the suspension are the two major advantages of the DRZ. Also if the way you intend to use it is to load it on the truck and ride the trails, the DRZ is probably the best choice, if otherwise, you want to ride it for long trips on mixed pavement (including A roads) the vibration on the DRZ will not help (a big plus for the CRF250L that you didn't mention). I decided to keep the CRF250L and saved the money, by not buying a DRZ. (I personally don't feel i'll ever need more power with the 13/40 gear ratio, it's an age thing 😁) I decided to upgraded to a SeatConcepts, the suspension (Ohlins back, Racetech front) and the Tank (being less expensive than trading the bike for a new one). In summary, I'll keep it until I turn 100 years old and can't ride it anymore (I'm sure the CRF will outlast me). 😎

@Alexander Ortiz Maldonado I recommend you try it yourself first, take a lender or something, but here is my experience: The last big trip was last November (www.adventurecountrytracks.com/act_portugal/), a 7 days/3000 Km north to south of Portugal (2 days to get from home to start and from finish back home), with every kind of pavement, the top speed we tend to stay at, on Highways, is about 90-110 km/h, when alone I'm even slower, you can do higher speeds but we like to relax and enjoy the views (and save the tires). We did around 200 km Highway for the trip, because we like to avoid Highways/Toll Roads whenever possible (on any bike actually). Sometimes, only off-road, I feel happy to go allot faster for small amounts of time (5 mins a day and that's enough :)), the 250L is plenty capable to go fast off-road (even with stock suspension, but that starts to be a bit sketchy). BTW: Also own an Africa Twin 2018, and for more serious off-road or TET like trips I take the CRF 250 L, it's a worry free go anywhere experience (and allot cheaper too). More recently also did "O Nosso Dakar 2020", look it up, it's about 450Km highway to get there and back for me. Hope this helps you. Not that it's a big deal the Honda great bike want one,but same weight with similar performance, miles per gallon, only thing that separates them is fuel injection, and 30+ year's🤔. I’m wishing I had gotten a DRZ. I had a KLR650 back in 2012 and I used to be able to ride it like a motocross bike. I was younger and stronger back then though. And I didn’t have a bad knee. Now I ride a 2018 KLR and I definitely notice the weight when I’m out shredding through trails. I can still do it but man does it beat me up and if I drop it it’s definitely a back killer to pick back up and my knee hates lifting it too. Valve check intervals are crazy long and about the same (15k/16k) but these bikes are so rock solid by reputation that a lot of people don't even do them then, from what I hear. CRF gets better mileage but the DRZ has a bigger tank so you end up getting about the same number of miles per fill up. Both bikes have stellar reputations for dependability and longevity, so I personally am not too concerned where they're manufactured.

Probably you should also update this video sir!!! In the meantime Honda has come out with the CRF 300 . The L or the Rally version. And both are fine machines. Where the Rally version is far more comfortable to get you over tarmac while heading to your favourite offroad spot. With this year Honda's update both CRF's in my humble opinion have gone up the ladder quite a bit. I has come also offroad a bit closer to the DRZ. The DRZ still has more punch but with all the extra's Honda has been putting in both their models there is really the need for you to buy one of them and make a new video.Just out of respect to Honda.🤭😏 And i think that you will love them and definitly won't be sorry that you bought one. At the moment own a KTM 1190 R. And probably a lot of you folkes won't agree with me. But i really think that the CRF 300 Rally would actually be a better bike for a long big adventure trip through Russia and Mongolia. Have been cruising on my fat lady in Norway and Sweden. Her big butt has seen a lot of gravel, trees and plain dirt. But the big lady get me tired. Hopping on a tiny and smaller girl will keep you going much longer. And in the end will be much more satisfying. And it is much easier for a smaller girl to keep her down with a tight grip and keep on going not ?? 🙄 But you have to give her some prosthetics if you are fond of her and want to use her a bit longer. Also to ride her harder. And if you do this little small girl will tick you in all the right places.👍👍
