This is our first time watching reaction to the live action anime adaptation of One Piece episode 4 "The Pirates Are Coming". Luffy, Zoro, and Nami fight their way through Kaya's mansion, which has now become a prison. Usopp enlists the help of Koby, Helmeppo, and the Marines. Luffy finally gets the ship of his dreams as Garp closes in.

What I like about this ep is: they show subtle clue of Zoro tendencies to get lost 1. His confused face when he find the wardrobe room, probably he got lost before he finally find that room 2. "This house is like a maze" probably he just circled around to find the kitchen 3. When he met luffy in yard and said "I thought I'm going back to the house" 😂

In the manga the Grandpa reveal happened quite a bit later on in the story, and everyone had pretty much the same reaction you had to it. Garp's full name is Monkey D. Garp, and if you think about it some it makes sense since Garp keeps ordering them to capture Luffy alive, not kill him like they would most other pirates.

@@bobb6504 From what I have heard others theorize, they wanted this One Piece to focus stronger on the Coby/Luffy relations. I don't want to put spoilers in this reactors' comments but I did not mind this change as it gave some insight into the Coby's path in the Marines vs Luffy''s path as a pirate. Also, it gave a chance for Garp to come to terms with Luffy's desire, and actually this set up the story for how Garp behaves in the future IMO.

In the original, they tell us that Kuina dies from falling down the stairs. I’ve always thought that, for Zoro, having someone that he really looked up to die from such a simple accident impacted his character and the kind of person he grows up to become.

Honestly, one of the best deaths in OP because it’s so mundane. Not everything in the universe is high stakes drama and people do get taken out by simple things. I always thought it directly impacted Zoro in his commitment to “dream or death” because death will happen regardless. And his take on God being “if he’s real I’m about to fight him” feels related as well.

En Japón la expresión "se cayó por las escaleras" se utiliza también para decir que alguien se ha suicidado. Por eso hay una teoría que dice que Kuina se suicidó. Pensad que en el manga y el anime el padre de Kuina era muy duro con ella y le decía que nunca podría heredar el Dojo ni ser la mejor espadachina del mundo porque era niña. Era un hombre muy machista en ese sentido.

In the manga/anime it is said that Kuina died bc she fell from the stairs, which produced tons of theories since it's weird for someone in this world (where we can see regular humans use to have more resistance and strenght than us) and especially for Kuina being as strong as she is, to just die from that. Some believe something else happen, some others that she's somehow still alive and there's also a theory that says that she could have killed herself since it used to be a regular lie in Japan that when someone commits suicide and the family doesn't want to share it or wants to cover it, they say that person died as an accident bc of falling from the stairs (something like that typical lie when you get punched and just say you got hurt by bump into the door). And fun fact, the teacher is actually Kuina's dad, that info was skipped in this adaptation during the flashback.

just gonna point out that they state that she died falling down the stairs because she was holding her sword which made the villagers question why she would need to clean it. they never say outright but I always assumed she was doing so because of her fight with zoro.

To me it’s just something they left out, I doubt they’re gonna go back and flesh it out, and it’s such a minor plot point I don’t think it matters if someone tells them about it, because they already saw the flashback and it’s not like the anime expands on it anymore, so it’s not much of a spoiler. I personally think they left it out solely because of the dark comedy that could be found in a character suddenly dying from falling down the stairs.

Garp is REALLY A BIG DEAL in Marine. He probably just sailing too often so he couldn’t stay beside Luffy for long. It didn’t show much in live adaptation, but the villager actually helped taking care of Luffy when he was little. In episode 2 you also see the bar owner prepared food for Luffy. (Not gonna spoiled too much about how Luffy grow up, so I only write something simple above)

In the original Merry survives the wounds. He also is the one who designed the ship for Kaya. Its why it has the sheep appearance and is named the Going Merry. He becomes Kaya's caretaker when the starhats set off.

@@garenthal9638 That is an amusing theory, but I think it's more likely they wanted to make the world more high-stakes and cut down on fakeout deaths. Going forward I would expect that anyone who appeared to die and then turned out actually not to (and didn't go on to be plot-relevant later) in the anime/manga will be dead for real in the live action. *spoilers* Like Pell and Bon Clay for example, though I'm holding out hope the latter will end up mattering by the end of the final saga. Otherwise cheapening the beauty of his sacrifice just for the sake of a cover story twist is a rare Oda L.

Love hearing your perspectives, being that you're new to it. I got my almost 80 year old dad to watch the 1st episode with me and it he laughed at all the jokes and was smiling almost the whole time. Afterward he said "I like that Luffy kid"

This show is basically an alternate retelling of One Piece, but it’s done in a very solid way imo. Much of the Kuro/Syrup Village arc was changed but I liked some of them and it made the entire episode unpredictable for me.

@@Alex254561 yh the ussop thing felt kinda weird, in the anime+manga you see Luffy wants ussop cus of his dedication to protect those he loves(protecting kaya from kuro), in the live action it just feels a little weird that he shoots 1 pellet at kuro, gets knocked out, and fluffy wants him to join because he saw him shooting peas into a pot

Honestly Live action Syrup Village arc > Anime/Manga Syrup Village arc. I think it was really clever to have most of it take place in Kaya's Mansion, which is a much more interesting setting than the slope a lot of the action took place on in the manga and anime.

Unfortunately, they have a tendency to disrespect anyone for simply being on the opposite side(s). Circumstances, reasonings, and/or choices don't really matter that much when they judge (or at least, not equally so for all characters) ^Whether it's a joke or not, it does hint that their minds work primarily in black-and-white... or so I've personally gathered, at any rate.

Nah fr... I guess the manga and anime takes more time to really base that relationship with Luffy. But imo the live action also did really well with showing the conflict of what "justice" is for Koby. And even from the start, both have established that in the future, they'll become "enemies" so Koby, standing up for what he believes he gotta do, makes sense, while Luffy also needs to do what he's gotta do. Every time they say Koby sucks, my heart breaks a little lmaooo

10:11 In the manga, Kuina died by falling down a set of stairs. In the later chapters, we see characters barely getting injured by falling from the sky. Thus, these stairs were recognized as one of the most powerful forces in the One Piece world. Fans call them Down D. Stairs.

10:11 the teacher is actually kuina's dad, and in the anime/manga he says she "fell down the stairs" and that led to her death, which is kind of the world of one piece when you compare what some humans without devil fruits survive. The reveal of garp being Luffys grandpa is actually a big change in the live action from the anime/manga, Garp is introduced in episode 68/69(when we first see Koby and Helmeppo in the Marines compared to LA episode 2) and after that he doesn't show up much until its finally revealed that he's luffys grandpa in the mid 300's episodes, so its a very big change to how things play out at least in this first East Blue saga/arc

As a long time fan of the anime, I actually like how Kuina died, and I'm glad they kept that. If there had been, for example, an attack and she had died defending here village or something heroic like that, it would have been one thing. But the fact that, after she and Zoro made that vow to each other, she just dies so unceremoniously and pointlessly (in the anime she slipped on some stairs in the rain, if I remember correctly, it was also of screen) and without a chance to even fight for their mutual goal is, I think, a major part of Zoros motivation.

A little thing that you guys might want to know, is that the kiss between Ussop and Kaya never happened, in both the Manga and the Anime. They were always portrayed as really good close friends, simply with Ussop always wanting to make her happy. Or at most, a sliver of a hint that Kaya herself may have thought of Ussop as something more than a friend. So I don't know if this applied to everyone else, but that kiss was a HUGE surprise for me. Couples and 'Ships' is not something we should usually obsess over in this series. But The Live Action now has actual evidence proving that Ussop and Kaya were meant to be a 'Canon' Couple more than any other.

This is one of the positives of the medium I think. Oda in the series has explicitly said he's staying away from romance (bc of a sexist reason, this is a "boys manga"). Oda also doesn't kill (bc this is for kids in the end and he wants the crew to be happy in the final party). But because this is Netflix, we can go there, with both the kiss and Merry's death. Heck, we may even get Zolu (kinda hinted a lot) or Navi or Zosan (lots of smiles there Sanji) hehehe

@@LarryBonson You sound like a hardcore anime fanboy who can't accept that in an adaptation from a different media, you can't adapt everything 1:1. The pirates invading the town is so 08/15 but Kuro here is supposed to be a genius tactician. Killing Kaya secretly and taking over her family business legally and either live the rest of his life in wealth or build a new fleet with it (since it's a ship-building business) makes way more sense, then having a bunch of pirates in his bakhand and tell them to attack at the right moment.

Enjoying your reactions so far! :D A couple of things to fill in some info, from the manga: 1) Kuro eventually became tired of always looking over his shoulder, constantly worrying who might come for his head, so he planned his death (by Axe-Hand Morgan) so he can basically retire and not have to worry about Bounty Hunters, Marines or other pirates. You can get a taste of that when he is taunting Luffy during their fight, telling him how he constantly has to look over his shoulder, being a pirate. 2) Luffy's grandpa, Garp is basically introduced waaaay further ahead in the story. They just took some liberties and introduced him earlier to kind of give him some more presence. This 1st Season, they have incorporated, roughly, the first 100 chapters of the manga, covering mostly the East Blue Saga. Season 2 will cover one small but very significant part of the East Blue Saga and then proceed to flesh out the next big Saga in the story. I am just leaving things a bit ambiguous so as to not spoil anything for you guys. :D Welcome onboard guys! We are all nakamas!

One of my favorite things about Kuro is that the reason he raises his glasses in such a weird way is because he's used to having the claws on his gloves. When he's using the claws he has to avoid cutting his face. It's just one detail that Oda gave him that I found neat.

The suddenness and arbitrary nature of Kuina's death is the point. From this moment on, Zoro ceases to fear death because he has already seen the strongest person he knows wiped out in the blink of an eye, for no reason. It's a good idea to pay attention to Zoro's relationship with death every time the topic comes up. You guys are lotsa fun, enjoying your vids!

I know 1000+ episodes can feel like a burden. But I can assure you that they are not at all. Once you get inside the story becomes addictive. I have been a reader of the manga for 10 years and now we are entering the final arc. Just thinking about it makes me want to cry because I wish it would never end.

Luffy has resistance against blunt damage so that’s why a bullet would still bounce off of him. But one of his weakness besides the sea is being cut. You can cut rubber and the reason why Kuro was able to hurt him.

After metal swords clash, they get a bit nicked Kuina was said to have been looking for a whetstone to sharpen the family blade after her duel with Zoro when she fell and hit her head I like to imagine that Zoro asking her to use metal swords made him blame himself for it, for extra angst

This saga is difficult to get through, so watching it this way is a lot faster and better. The East blue saga is like a prologue, so when you start with the anime it's where the real adventure actually begins.

Definitely this is why I don't want them to watch the anime yet... at least not past East Blue. They can look up stuff obviously if they want like video comparison, Opening, Ending or wiki page to have an idea of the craziness to come. But That would be so much more fun if they go blind for the upcoming seasons. It will take time and year for the Live Action to finish but One Piece is about the journey not catching up to 1000 episodes! That is the Purpose of the Live Action in the first place. I loved House of Dragon s1, never read the books so I want to finish my experience with that story not knowing what would happen next and only going back to the books, reading it after the HBO 3 seasons are done not until then. Patience is virtue! Blind reaction to OPLA is Gold. >>> Of course when the series finishes or gets cancelled. Now then looking at 2036 and beyond I would pressure them to react to the anime or the rest of it lol We will have more pain and get older but that is not something to fear. This beautiful couple should react to others things then just One Piece in the years to come. We one piece fans already won by having the general public being interested in the IP.

This is not a spoiler, just to clear some things up. Kuina literally died in a freak accident falling from the stairs or something like that... it kinda goes to show that even when Zoro and her had this plan and dream and they thought they knew where their lives were headed, and thought they were invincible (especially as young bright eyes kids), life was one step ahead of them.

I like how they say if it were any other show they would be suspicious of Kuina's offscreen death. When really this is the EXACT show you should be suspicious of everything. And yet somehow everyone gets suspicious about Kuina's accident when it's the only thing in the series that is just straightforward because it's showing that people can die at any time for meaningless reasons as a character development point.

In the anime at least, Kuina wanted a fresh whetstone to sharpen her sword, and so climbed the smooth stone stairs to the dojo's storehouse... in the rain. (Note that they're both quite a bit younger when it happens in the anime; I kinda understand leaving the details out in the live action because it would make her look a lot dumber doing that as a mid-teen than as an under-ten.) The fact that a stronger fighter he looked up to died so senselessly shaped Zoro's entire outlook on life, making him willing to gamble his life in situations most people wouldn't because he realizes it's *always* at risk no matter what you do.

Non-spoiler information about Garp from the anime: 1. Garp is as loving, carefree, devil-may-care and crazily optimistic and amusing as Luffy. 2. Whenever Luffy destroys stuffs or creates chaos, the Marine higher-ups give Garp a call and scold him by saying "Your stupid grandson is giving us trouble again!!", and he just replies by saying "Hahahaha, THAT'S MY BOI". 3. Garp is NOT an obsessive person. He has never shown any obsessive behavior in the original material so far. 4. Garp is not an "evil parental figure", actually, the crew concluded that it was THANKS to Garps interventions that Luffy is as strong and powerful as he is now. The One Piece world is very dangerous and Garp made sure Luffy would survive. 5. Garps is a comedic idiot, and his actions are hilarious in that sense. Whenever Garp is ordered to capture Luffy, he ALWAYS says "Nah. You're my grandson, I won't capture you". Then he has to get a scolding call from the Fleet Admiral for refusing to follow orders, and then Garp tells Luffy: "Eyy, Luffy!!! I told the Marines I won't hunt you down, but they told me that I can't do that. So...I'm sorry, but I think I'll have to destroy your ship with your crewmates now... I trust you'll survive this. Best of Luck...Okey....I think I should start attacking you now...Ok...I'll attack you now. Here goes a cannonball!!"

im sure dozens of others have already explained it it - but kuina died from a fall down the stairs. originally their duel was a night and when she got home she was sneaking around her house in the dark to get her whetstone since they'd used real swords. she fell and no one found her until the next morning. she represents all the people who are there one day and then just gone the next with no rhythm or reason. that sometimes - people just die. fun (heartbreaking) fact - she's named after the Yanbaru kuina bird - an essentially flightless bird. her fate was always going to hurt

In the manga the Sensei, who is Kuina's father, says that she "fell down the stairs", which apparently in Japanese culture is or was an excuse people made when someone committed suicide. So people speculate that after they made the vow that Kuina killed herself knowing she could never fulfill the promise and leave it all up to Zoro so he had no choice but to reach the top to honour their vow.

Pretty sure that was debunked. The whole point of Kuina's death was to show that death a mundane thing which can come at any point. Which is part of why Zoro doesn't fear it. Its also meant to give Zoro a bit of a guilty consciousness as the reason she went down the stairs was to get a whetstone. To sharpen her blade for their next match.

Don´t know if you have gotten an answere yet in the comments. But Kuina died falling down a flight of stairs one night. It was an actual accident. The guy that gave Zoro her sword is Kuina´s dad. He was also Zoro´s dojo master. That is how they knew each other. Zoro moved in from off the streets and challanged the dojo master to a fight. But he was told that he had to fight Kuina instead. Then when he got his ass handed to him he woved to stay there until he was the "greatest swordsman in the world" that is his one true goal and dream. So that is why Kuina´s fathe rallowed him to take the sword. The sword is EXTREMELY special. One of the greatest made swords in the world, that was given to her by her father. So it is a big deal that he was allowed to carry her sword.
