This is our first time watching reaction to the live action anime adaptation of One Piece episode 6 "The Chef and the Chore Boy". The group is ambushed by a threat no one sees coming. After a hard-fought battle at the Baratie, Sanji finally follows his dreams while another crew member shows their true colors.

All the fighting skills that sanji has, he learned from zeff, as well as the art of gastronomy, zeff also taught him to never hurt a lady and they fight with their legs because they value hands to the kitchen

Zeff used the treasure from the huge rock to create the Baratie restaurant because he wanted to help any sailors like themselves who were starving pn the seas. It helped our crew get away from Garp, and it even has a lighthouse on top. Im glad you guys caught some of the foreshadowing from the previous episodes.

I love this backstory so much! In the manga it was shown to us to explain why Sanji and Zeff value food so much and refuse to waste any or let anyone go hungry no matter who they are. It also explains how they got the idea to open the restaurant. For some reason they've changed it here for a different point, to show how tough it can be to be a Captain. It's still works but it's not as powerful I feel like..

For the Sanji fighting style, they said it during the flashback. Zeff was nicknamed, Red-footed Zeff and his fighting style was to fight with feet that ended up being stained with the blood of his opponents. And Sanji naturally learned from him.

Also gives more meaning to Zeff's farewell: "Keep your feet dry". He doesn't want Sanji to lose his kindness so he tells him to not be as bloody as he was as a pirate.

The reason the fighting style is kicks is because hands are tools for cooking not fighting. If a chef breaks his hands he can no longer cook.

As a Sanji fan, I always thought it was fascinating how it was Sanji of all to have a similar backstory to Luffy and also share a very similar dream

Because Sanji embody the passion for dreams like Luffy, while Zoro embodies more so the ambition of dreams which Luffy has too (which is why they're the wings of the Pirate King :P )

Zeff and Sanji's blowout and teary farewell was honestly one of my fave moments in the entire season. It's much more muted than in the manga, but it hits all the harder with all the "we can't talk about emotions" machismo they've built up between them. When it finally breaks it's beautiful.

Yeah it's great my only gripe is that they missed the mark on why Sanji chose the Straw Hats specifically because he watched Zoro's fight with Mihawk in the manga and saw how far he went for his dream. And then Luffy defended Baratie from Don Kreig which made him see what kind of a captain and person he is, as well as someone actively fighting for their dream. Where as in the live action he sees Luffy get his ass whooped by Arlong and then is like, "That's my captain!" LOL

⁠⁠@@ImAviex He saw Luffy not stop Zoro from chasing his dream and also defended Baratie against Arlong even though Nami told them to run away. Even if he got his ass whooped we can just infer that Sanji saw that same bravery and commitment in Luffy even though it almost costs his life. Just like Jeff giving up his leg for Sanji, Luffy is a man of his word when he said he would do the same. We don’t get inner monologue in OP live adaptation like in anime nor do we need to have everything spelled out, so sometimes we just need to deduce things.

@@ImAviex Did you not see the episode, this entire episode is Sanji cooking on Luffy's ship and building that bond by telling his story to Luffy, you don't just talk about your own back story to someone that you don't like, and you don't start cooking for him. Or did you just skipped the episode just to talk shit, its literally what the entire episode is about, Sanji building that connection with the strawhat crew so that him joining isn't weird.

Sanji and the Baratie's story really does hit different when you have yourself lived with a childhood of food insecurity. Like, my roommate is constantly confused as to why i refuse to give up on food that 's past the expiration date but doesn't smell or look weird or food that's accidentally been out of the fridge for a bit longer than it should have. She gets annoyed about how often i nag on her about not forgetting to eat or how my default response to ""huh, i feel weird" is "well have you eaten today?". "If a person is hungry, i feed them" is such a simple but beautiful display of love and care for a fellow human being and it really stuck with me when i first watched the anime so many years ago. That's why i'm sooooooo fucking glad they've reworked his annoyingly over-the-top simping for women to just be him being quick to flirt. It was the biggest thing keeping him from being probably my favorite crew member and now with it at least mostly gone i hope this man's kindness and compassion can shine through in the way it really always should have.

In my house when we could we cut away what was bad and saved what was good (ie one soft part of a lemon), and otherwise rather than throwing the food in the rubbish we used a compost bin - and then much later added a worm farm to balance out how much compost we had to carry outside, and then a bokashi bin for the meat and dairy products. Not so much the same as eating everything, but we're still putting the bad food to good use by using it to create a healthier soil.

My thinking is that: SPOILERS The first and second episode will be Logue Town and the Grand Line. Episodes 3 and 4 will be Chopper arc. Episodes 5-8 will ALL be Alabasta arc. And if we get more episodes than 8, we'll start seeing some more fleshing out :)

The series creator, Oda, once drew what each crew member's pirate flag would look like if they were captain of their own ship. the unique logos in each episode has been either one of those or a different character's existing jolly roger. this episodes title was Sanji's jolly roger, the chicken one last episode was Zeff's jolly roger for the Cook Pirates.

Mihawk really just put two and two together really. Monkey D. Luffy, Monkey D. Garp. Garp's full name isn't really mentioned in this season, but it's reasonable to assume Mihawk would know the name of his "boss" so to speak.

Fun Fact: Mihawk's design is actually based on the old style Spanish conquistadors and the ost when he was fighting Zoro was a nice hint to that!

I'm a newb with One Piece, this show being my introduction to it, so I know nothing of the storylines. My feeling with Zoro was that he already thought he was the best swordsman and just needed to beat Mihawk to officially get the title. Now, though, he realized he's got a long road ahead to even get close to Mihawk's power and skill. Whole new outlook for him.

I love that you picked up on why Zeff was proud that Sanji fed Gin and why he was so mean to him, hoping he would leave to find the All Blue. Both are more fleshed out in the anime, so I’m glad y’all caught on.

Sanji and Zeff's relationship is the highlight of the series to me. Their interactions feel like a real connection between 2 actual humans having actual dialogues (thanks to their fantastic acting chops) instead of cartoon characters, and it completely stands out among the rest of the series.

In the anime, Nami going with Arlong was actually a plot twist since there had been no hints that she was working for someone else. The betrayal was even worse because she took the Merry with her.

Good point. Their approach no doubt helped point a direction for Luffy's growth, but kinda at Sanji's expense. It took away the momentum behind Sanji's motivation in regards to cooking and food..

A little curiosity about sanji, the character only use kicks when fighting so the actor spent 2 years training taekwondo for like 8 to 10 hours per day to play Sanji, he is almost black belt now, so all the kicks and stunts are done by the actor, after i learned this i got high respect for him, and it's a shame that even in his own arc they didn't give him much screen time and focused it on luffy and zoro.

He didn't spent 2 years training 8 hours a day. That was only when he got in South Africa for filming and it was for just a few months. And you don't get a black belt in taekwondo after two years even with 10 hours of training daily anyway! Why are you blatantly lying like this? I thought he didn’t have much to shine either but the flashback scene was enough to understand the relationship between Zeff/Sanji and the type of person Sanji became. I really felt emotional when Sanji finally departed because of the backstory and they way Zeff/Sanji converse!

@@hardensoul7248 yes, but i was speaking more about the actor Taz Skylar, the one who acted in the flashback was the kid, the guy worked his ass off to play sanji and the only meaningful scene he got was that goodbye at the end in his own arc, even the fighting that he spent 2 years to learn didn't have much focus in this arc.

Sanji's backstory was one of few scenes I think I enjoyed more in this version than in the anime. Zeff eating his own leg was too much even for the anime I guess, so they changed it to him losing it when the ship wrecked. As an anime-only back in early One Piece, I actually found out for the first time through this iteration lmao

Also, one of Sanji's pet peeves is no wasting food, he hates thats. Sanji's back story even goes beyond before he meets Zeff. So a good reason to watch the anime or read the manga to see it.

Being stranded on the island for a long time with very litlle food also made sanji very strict on not wasting food. In the anime even the peel of vegetables & fruits he dries and powder them for seasoning and spices

The thing that I love about the live action is that Oda, the author, allowed changes to the story for the live action adaptation, but the one thing he wanted nearly 100% the same were the backstories of each of the main cast.

Nami was right though. If a swimteam champion decides to go deepsea cave diving with no diving experience just because it's their dream and they came across a spot to do it... that doesn't mean their friends should just stand by and let them. She knew he was so far out of his depth that he was basically committing suicide and Luffy really should have stopped him. He's their captain and their lives are his responsibility. it's the first time Luffy's naive approach to life didn't just immediately work out.. and it had a pretty serious consequence. I kinda appreciate the lesson couched in that, as it's not the usual cynical note of "see optimism is dumb" but rather a reminder that you still have to do the work and be smart about things to achieve your dreams. No instant gratification.

Yeah, the thing is, there are some people who are the type to learn when they're actually trying to do something, even if it costs their lives. Is it practical? No, but is it the wrong thing to do? No, because at the end of it, it's him or her who's going to do their part alone to atone for the actions they're about to take; they know the risk. Let's say that even for Nami herself, she knew the risk, but she's going for it. If you watch the anime or read the manga, you know just how far she'd try to save her friends or even people that she loved. Don't underestimate someone's dream, even if it's not the rational one.

I don't know I you seen the anime but in it Zorro challenges him more out of a desire to see how he compares to the best. While the out come is the same it isn't arrogance that drives him. rather a simple the best is standing before me I need to see the difference in our strength

its because its an anime that everything turned out okay. in real life mihawks dont exist, foreshadowing and underdogs getting second chances to grow doesnt exist, in real life actions have consequences not meta god-like interference and plot armour because zoro cant die early on in this story@@ibuprofriends

One Piece golden rule: if a flashback backstory starts, grab a tissue. If you end up watching the anime, please rewatch from the start. Things like Sanji's goodbye hit much harder in the anime, imo. Also, there's a much bigger emphasis on Sanji and Zeff's motto of not wasting food and always feeding the hungry, because of what they went through. Like feeding that lost pirate, we only see Zeff saying "what a good boy" but one could almost assume him being sarcastic in this show.

Fun fact the actor who plays Sanji actually does his own stunts and cooked the food he cooks on the show. He spent time learning Kickboxing and various martial arts to prepare for the role and even became a black belt, then enrolled into culinary classes to learn how to cook. He even cooks the entire cast and show crew's lunch, and it really seems the cast became good friends, the off-handed said they went to his house for an a meal he wanted to try out so that's pretty awesome

Fun fact for you guys: The All Blue is an ocean where all kinds of fishes & marine lifeforms gather. It makes chefs easier to get ingredients. It's like the heaven for chefs & seafood lovers.

It's unfortunate they left out more about zeff, he was called red leg Zeff because his fighting style that he basically invented was kickfighting only. It was shown when he walked into the kitchen in the backstory because his feet and ankles were covered in blood and viscera, airgo the nickname. Good catch about feeding the hungry man. That is a huge part of his character along with not wasting food. This is more explored in the manga/anime. He will feed a starving man - even if he is his enemy.

원피스 처음에 그냥 나도 기대 크게 안하고 그냥 만화 생각하면서 웃으면서 봤는데, 3화때부터 2화후반부터는 정말 생각이 달라졌어. 그리고 4화때는 빌런 연기하던 크루 역하던 배우가 너무 연기를 잘하는거야. 너무 재밌게 보고 8화까지 다 봤는데, 잘만들었다는 말이 절로 나와. 이런 만화를 보면, 만화 실사화한것을 보면 아직도 무시하고 약간 내리깔고 그런것이 있는데, 그런것이 아예 없고, 무조건 그런 의견내면 안된다는것도 아닌데, 그럴수도있지. 평가는 각자하는건데, 내가보기엔 평가가 좀 비판적이다? 의외로 잘 만들었어. 재밌어. 그런데 너무 비판일색이다? 그런느낌.

Honestly, keeping Buggy more tied to the early storyline was the best thing they could have done. Jeff Ward is really the breakout star of the series, which is saying a LOT when put beside Godoy and Mackenyu, who were both BORN to play these roles.

19:27 The actor for Sanji, Taz Skylar, took up kickboxing for the role, and also learned how to cook for the role. I think he'd done some sort of martial arts before this role as well. He's from the Canary Islands in Spain, but one parent's from England (Yorkshire I think) and the other (I think) is Lebanese, so he speak Spanish and English pretty fluently (see videos of him speaking Spanish with Luffy's actor Inaki Godoy - he's from Mexico). Oh, and we wrote an off-West-End play that I think may have been nominated for an Olivier award.
