CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Dottie (Geena Davis), Kit (Lori Petty), and Hooch (Megan Cavanagh) arrive at try outs and get bullied by Mae (Madonna) and Doris (Rosie O'Donnell).
FILM DESCRIPTION:
The All-American Girls' Professional Baseball League was founded in 1943, when most of the men of baseball-playing age were far away in Europe and Asia fighting World War II. The league flourished until after World War II, when, with the men's return, the league was consigned to oblivion. Director Penny Marshall and screenwriters Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel re-create the wartime era when women's baseball looked to stand a good chance of sweeping the country. The story begins as a candy-bar tycoon enlists agents to scour the country to find women who could play ball. In the backwoods of Oregon, two sisters -- Dottie (Geena Davis) and Kit (Lori Petty) -- are discovered. Dottie can hit and catch, while Kit can throw a mean fastball. The girls come to Chicago to try out for the team with other prospects that include their soon-to-be-teammates Mae Mordabito (Madonna), Doris Murphy (Rosie O'Donnell), and Marla Hooch (Megan Cavanagh). The team's owner, Walter Harvey (Gary Marshall) needs someone to coach his team and he picks one-time home-run champion Jimmy Dugan (Tom Hanks), who is now a broken-down alcoholic. After a few weeks of training, as Dugan sobers up, the team begins to show some promise. By the end of the season, the team has improved to the point where they are competing in the World Series (which is no big deal, since there are only four teams in the league).

I actually love how the reactions are between the three women in that instant the ball is thrown. Dottie, best in the league and farmhand, snatches the ball right out of the air without flinching. Marla, #2 and raised as a ball player, immediately goes into a shortstop crouch to prepare to catch the ball and relaxes her hands once she realizes it's not coming her way anymore. And Kit, who has a tendency to swing for high fastballs believing they're in her strike zone, ducks out of the way of a ball that's a bit too high to actually hit her.

Their dad decided to make an appearance...as rare as those are. We were late so we had to run to the site. I kept up pretty well. I used to be a runner and play soccer. When they were complaining about the uniforms, the league manager told them that if they can't play in those uniforms then they can't play at all. Mae said that the uniforms don't have any pockets for her cigarettes but the manager told them that there is no smoking... or drinking or men. When Mae heard that she got up and started to leave like she was saying, "Screw that, I'm outta here," but Doris pulled Mae back down to stay. Smoking, drinking and doing men is basically Mae's whole lifestyle.

If you listen to the movie, it's mentioned that Walter Harvey is the owner of the Harvey Chocolate company, so it's pretty obvious that he's a stand in for Phil Wrigley, owner of the Wrigley Gum company in real life. So of course "Harvey Field" is actually Wrigley Field.

Great movie. Love the scene when Tom Hanks character is yelling there's no crying in baseball, and the blonde beauty(sorry! can't remember names😕). He yells are you crying? She's looking down, crying, shaking her head "no...."😢 And another, they're in church, and at confession, they hear a loud THUMP, and one of the girls says thats the second time he dropped the bible since she's been in there. A couple minutes later May bounces out, and the priest peeps out, face red, and beads of perspiration on his face. There are so many funny moments.

Everybody concentrates on Gina Davis catching the throw with no trouble, ignoring that Laurie Petty got out of the way of the pitch and Meaghan Cavanaugh had her glove up to catch it -- both before it struck. Great reflexes on their part.
