I built Chris Notap's "Simple Cyclone Dust Collector" using two 5 gallon buckets and a shop-vac. I go into expanded details of how to make it, what you can expect that Chris didn't cover in his video, and a review of how well it works, and if it is worth doing yourself!
You can find his video here: @
Shop Vac: @D-10-Gal-6-0-Peak-HP-Stainless-Steel-Wet-Dry-Shop-Vacuum-with-Filter-Hose-and-Accessories-WD1060/301070987
Make sure to buy a second hose to complete the project and make sure to check Chris' video description for material list.

Oakley I see a couple of things I really like and a couple... Well not so much. Not that I'm someone who is ever have a major effect in your life one way or the other but I hope you'll spend a few moments and read these comments please. 1st I really liked the fact that you mentioned the other tuber, making sure giving his credits. Many say look what I can do cause I'm smart... Bla I'm a retired industrial machinist and here because I'm learning and sharing with others... It's the only way we all get better than we were yesterday. I liked and subscribed half way through this (the 1st of your videos I've seen) this faucet of your personality screamed intelligent, well orientated, team player to me. I also like your looks, a clean cut young man. You will reach a younger generation that I could ever hope too. You can really make a difference in another persons life, a major difference. Safety, both acute and accumulative. Please don't forget to mention PPE in your videos. Little things like wearing your glasses running a grinder, shades when you weld, and being mindful of sharps when are cutting may seem like nothing until an eye is gone. Really it happens all the time. Be that beacon, and you'll see someone will message you and say I still have 10 fingers because you said... Or I'm alive today because of you. I used to tell my children while they were growing up, (Be responsible for your actions and the effects they have on the people around you)I'm not telling you what to do but I do hope my suggestions ring a bell with you. About the dust collector, the 2 buckets will be stiff opening and closing at 1st but will find their sweet spot soon. HDPE is effected by temp, age and pressure and pretty durable stuff. You might want to wire mount the collector to the shop vac because the vac has wheels and can be pulled all over the shop. Otherwise you'll see hose issues forever. Or you can run a network of capped pipe to run vacuum every where you need the collector keeping the vac out of sight as well as hearing. google in wall hotel vacuum systems. That should pull up some good examples. You might also see a hose system that plugs into a wall cap. Most of these I've seen were attached to silos. Great for high volume or high value collection. Also worked great as hasmat, 1st hose system I saw was at a chrome shop I worked at as a teenager. The silo was set up in a containment field, quarter of a city block cement box. All the chemicals we used there were nasty toxic crap.check it out and see what's a fit for you.

Hello John! Thank you for such wonderful and compassionate words. I very much appreciate them as well as you subscribing and supporting my channel. I do try to be a good role model for others and I know that I don't always do that in terms of PPE, but I will do my best to move forward with all of the advice and suggestions that you have offered to me. Thanks again and feel free to leave any advice or well wishes on any of my future content. I will have more coming up the first week of August so be looking for that. Thanks!!!

they're called "central vacuum systems" not "in wall hotel vacuum" and if you do get one I'd recommend a 240volt / 30 amp one that exhausts out side, and run it throughout your house with 2 inch pvc. you can get "sweeps" and "central vacuum hookups" all over home depot, lowes, amazon, ebay, etc.

I use the size 1 and 1/0 Mustad hooks to freeline for snook kzfaq.infoUgkxzXmlErSqVAEGWFEKO530BvTqFDw53QW3 and they have been fantastic. The points are super sharp, and the hook is small enough to blend with my baitfish, yet large enough to land fish 30" or more. I also use these hooks when I'm pier or surf fishing with my kids. They tend to catch tons of smaller snapper, whiting, and catfish, and we get far fewer gut hooks with these Mustad in-lines, which means more of them survive after release. I was actually using these hooks when I caught my friend too, but I think that had more to do with the bait I was using ;-)

I have had BROWN lung from sawdust, back in 1980 or so. We were working at the Army base Craft shop in Stuttgart Germany and did not have a good filtering system. On my Chris Notap's design I used 4 buckets. One with a lid upside down but cut 5 inches off the bottom. I then filled it, lid down, with wet cement 1 inch higher than the level of the 2nd bucket when pushed down in to it. Put a contractor trash bag over #2 bucket and shoved #2 bucket down, pushing the cement up the sides a little, the sheeting kept the cement off #2 bucket. Let the cement cure for 2 days. Removed the trash bag. Bucket #3 I did the PVC piping but put 2 90 degree elbows so the hoses were coming out sideways. #4 bucket was cut like Chris Notap's UPDATED version* to slide over #3 to make it so it could not suck in. The added weight of concrete and the hoses going 90 degrees keeps it from tipping easier. See Chris Notaps Update here kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eMuFZ9GiuLDYco0.html

I discovered a much better way to put the two buckets together. It involves sacrificing a third bucket, but if you can handle that expense it's much simpler than your method. All I did was cut around the third bucket just below the handle, then cut around it again about four inches further down. That gave me a sleeve that will fit snugly into the top bucket, leaving about an inch below the connection point. Now the two buckets just go together, making a very tight seal. They are easy to lock together, and easy to separate. Feel free to try this. Worked for me, eh. Thanks.

@@oakleydoeseverything6438 I also liked your review of Chris's dust collector version 1. I just want to share that Chris rotated the internal 45 degree fitting, slightly, pointing it more downwards. I was also inspired by Chris Notap's design but wanted some imperial data using extremely fine dust. I followed his instructions with one alteration. I used 90-degree elbows on the inlet and outlet of the exterior of the cyclone dust collector. I used a 5-gallon 6-amp Shop Vac with factory pleated filter as vacuum source. The collection hose used was a 1-1/4 Shop Vac hose. The hose between the cyclone and vac is a 90 cm piece of 1-1/4 pool hose. I used Portland cement powder as a substitute for drywall dust figuring it is a similar particle size and density. I tried to suck up the Portland over a couple of minutes but realistically, this particle flow rate is way high. This resulted in extreme static build up. Here are my results: 1109 grams Portland sample. 964 grams collected in cyclone. Unmeasurable amount in Shop Vac barrel measuring with a scale with 1 gram resolution. 7 grams on Shop Vac filter. This was enough to audibly detect the Shop Vac loading but not plugged. The static build up seemed to result in the remaining 138 grams to be precipitated out on the inside of both hose.

These DIY dust collectors aren't capable of catching "fine particles". They are made to take the bulk load off of the vacuums and make it more convenient to empty the waste. That's why they put filters on the vacuums to stop the fines from being broadcast back into the room. Of all the examples of DIY collectors I've seen, the only thing I see being better than this design would be to build it with a trash can for the container.

@@78tag With regard to your comment about fine particles, I am considering making a slightly modified version of this collector (placement of the inlet elbows on the side) to collect old carpet glue and three layers of old paint on my concrete floor. I'm using an angle grinder, diamond cup with a shroud, and concrete dust is also in the mix. With only my shop vac connected, I have to empty the vac every 5 minutes and shake out the filter. Not efficient. Do you have any experience you can share with this use? Thanks.

Funny as I just went through this same process making Chris Notap's dust cyclone about three or four days ago after I bought myself a Rigid shop vac. Do you see any issues using 2” ABS pipe and fittings instead of 1 1/2”? If the shop vac comes with 2” hose it seems silly to reduce it with 1 1/2” fittings. I imagine air-flow (cubic feet per minute) would be greatly reduced by reducing to 1 1/2”. Am I seeing this wrong?

I subscribed! I also observed that you did not angle down the 45. It seems that it will not make a difference one way or another. Chris did have more dust on his cloth filter, but he also demonstrated more sawdust to pick up. I am going to make one as well without angling down the 45 and will not buy the Dust Deputy. Seems easy enough and I have small swivel casters ready to go for the base. This is a nice idea and perhaps a youtube channel where you replicate what others did (and review the results) and give them credit will be popular. At least I will have an interest in that. So many carpenters make things look so easy, but I wonder if I am up to even the simplest of projects...

Oakley - John Kiss is offering up great advice about the safety thing and your possible influence on a new generation of DIY'ers. Nobody ever thinks nasty accidents will happen to them until they do. It took me a long time to get it as well. Don't ever feel uncomfortable making an example of yourself when applying safety procedures. I apologize upfront for getting a little political here but with this massive influx of unskilled (illegal) immigrants we are seeing today, you are going to see a major drop in quality of work and interest in quality of work. At the same time, there is going to be an uptick in just plain stupid/unsafe, third world approaches to work and your generation is going to need some individuals like you to be the example of the standard this country has set up to now. Keep up the good work bud!

I saw Chris Notap's video the other day and want to make one of these, too. What I'm still trying to figure out, though, is WHY we're building this dust separator? What's the benefit of keeping the shop vac clean? Is it just to keep the filter from getting dirty? Why not operate it without a filter? I've seen 2-stage filters where heavy materials go in one spot and the smaller dust goes into the shop vac (or vice versa). That I kind of understand. This design, not so much, unless it's the same thing, but it would seem everything ends up in the bucket. Thanks! And good luck building your shop!
@oakleydoeseverything6438

You bring up a great question! The reason I have this and keep using it is because even though some debris will inevitably end up in the vacuum itself, it is much less and I don't have to clean or exchange the filter in my shop vac as often. And it gives an additional "filter" so that the air that comes out of the shop vac has a better chance of being cleaner when it exits. I have to proof it facts to back that up, but that is my perception on the matter. It's also easier to empty a bucket that doesn't have a filter, rather than a shop vac and have to deal with the clumsiness of it. Thanks for commenting and asking!

Has no one ever cleaned out the filter before ? My shop vac from HD has had the same filter for 2 years. When it dirty a just go and clean it out in my trash can. There is also another video I saw where a former NASA engineer that worked in system filtration uses only paper towels wrapped around his vac inlet. He has it tied to a larger home made dust separator and it appears to work flawlessly. Since I saw his video on YT I now wrap the towels around my vac filter as a "Pre-Filter" and I have to clean much less now. I like the dust separator system just for the collection aspects, I will use some of the larger particles mixed with paraffin wax as a "Fire Starter" for the firepit and campfires.

Come on! Were you trolling for views? Yes you acknowledge "original" poster....but u still get views. Why would I sweep up my sawdust into a pile, then vac. I want to eliminate the sawdust in first place. Why not show how to collect clippings real-time . That would save a bunch of time. If I have to use shop vac to collect, why not just empty shop vac? BTW, this is your work , nit Chris's.

Thanks for your thoughts! I honestly contemplated not paying this after I finished editing it because I didn't think it was a very good video, but I posted it to keep practice. I never expected that this video would do as well as it has! If you check out the views on my other videos, most are less then 100... And for the real time clipping, I just didn't have any projects or good examples to show at the time I recorded this. And what do you mean by your last sentences? It's my work not Chris's? Not sure I understand.

Not a copy cat! Just a review. 😁 And I give full credit to the original designer and maker. Chris Notap came up with an incredible and simple option!
