CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Walter (Fred MacMurray) confronts Phyllis (Barbara Stanwyck) about her manipulative ways, but ends up on the wrong side of her gun.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Directed by Billy Wilder and adapted from a James M. Cain novel by Wilder and Raymond Chandler, Double Indemnity represents the high-water mark of 1940s film noir urban crime dramas in which a greedy, weak man is seduced and trapped by a cold, evil woman amidst the dark shadows and Expressionist lighting of modern cities. Phyllis Dietrichson (Barbara Stanwyck) seduces insurance agent Walter Neff (Fred MacMurray) into murdering her husband to collect his accident policy. The murder goes as planned, but after the couple's passion cools, each becomes suspicious of the other's motives. The plan is further complicated when Neff's boss Barton Keyes (Edward G. Robinson), a brilliant insurance investigator, takes over the investigation. Told in flashbacks from Neff's perspective, the film moves with ruthless determinism as each character meets what seems to be a preordained fate. Movie veterans Stanwyck, MacMurray, and Robinson give some of their best performances, and Wilder's cynical sensibility finds a perfect match in the story's unsentimental perspective, heightened by John Seitz's hard-edged cinematography. Double Indemnity ranks with the classics of mainstream Hollywood movie-making.

Barbara Stanwyck in this movie is the ultimate femme fatale of cinema. No one in movie history tops her if there were to be a list of femme fatales.

i think Neff loves Phillys, always, but he wanted to end everything up. the more time he spend with Lola, the more guilty he feel, and then he knew terrible things about Phillys, which makes him wanted to kill her and turn himself out. He lied to her that Nino will take all the réponsibilities but its not what happened.

Walter heard the tapes from Keyes indicating that Phyllis was seeing Nino Zachetti. Keyes believed that Zachetti and Phyllis killed her (Phyllis) husband. Walter knew this from hearing Keyes's tapes. I think this is in large part due to guilt that Walter comes clean by recording his confession to Keyes. Walter also knows that Keyes believes that Zachetti was involved with the murder so he wants to make sure that Zachetti is nowhere where the cops could find him.

Lola knew that her dad had rejected the idea of investing in a life insurance policy. Why didn’t she tell the cops about it when there was talk of Phyllis’ filing a claim on a policy her dad had refused to buy? Why didn’t she tell the cops that she suspected foul play? Also, Neff could have tried to cross the border first before recording his confession. Why did he do it at his office? 😵‍💫 This is one of my favorites among Stanwyck's many great movies. The entire cast is stellar.
