In pretty much every competitive sport physical or mental, ego is the biggest wall to improvement there is, the belief that you deserve to win due to your current skill level is self defeating, and anger/pride in defeat prevents any learning opportunities. Easy to talk about it as if it's a simple thing to get over, but often hard to master truly removing yourself from ego during a game. Emotional intelligence plays a massive role.

Rosen is one of my top favorite players to watch: super funny, good and clear instruction, and introduces interesting ideas. His deadpan comedic commentary is golden.

16:35 I'm always amazed when I watch someone and they just casually go through a forced mate in 6 sequence in only 10 seconds. I always have to take my time and identify all of the escape squares and which squares are covered one by one. Maybe it's because I started chess as an adult.

Yeah, that's the benefit of starting at a young age. You'd be so familiar with the pieces you'll know instinctively what they can and can't do on certain squares.

Bat girl has a 3 part series on the Muzio and double muzio where she shows heaps of amazing 19th century wins. The really crazy way to play a double muzio is the Gulam Kassim gambit as played by Morphy v Knott 1859, where you dont even recapture on F3 and let black take on g2 tucking the king of g1

About starting early: i learned chess when I was around five and played some, but I didn’t really pick it up before now. I think it would’ve helped a lot to continue playing reguraly. I regret that a lot

I don't really regret not starting to play at a younger age. I'm 39 and only started playing about a year and a half ago. I'm no good, but it's tons of fun and I feel I'm learning with every game, although very slowly.

At 5:37, moving Qg3 is a really bad, according to the computer, you're taking an advantage of +3.8 and turning it into an equal position. Capturing en passant is the way to go. And after King Captures pawn, Rook f1 is the winning idea

Thinking about you talking about learning Chess at a young age. I am in my mid 30s, I played some in middle school before discovering Magic the Gathering and other CCGs. I may not have learned a lot of chess at a young age, but I think my 20 years of general competitive strategy game experience will help me pick up chess faster than not. With my new discovered love of chess (and Go, of which I watched the video you learned on and that was great) I am trying to get my stepson to play because I am seeing my chess research helping my play of other games.

I'm currently 21 - I played Chess when I was 8 for a bit, but only against my parent for the most part. I am now 21, and I have started to take Chess seriously. At my age, am I too old to be able to get to a good ranking/fide/elo level? How long realistically does it take for someone to get to a serious level in Chess. Even if GM is out of my reach, would IM be possible before 30? How hard would you say it is to actually get anywhere competitively in Chess?

Although it depends a lot on the area you live in, you will already be able to play weekly competitive matches and compete for the win in smaller tournaments from some 1800-2000 elo!

1. e4 e5. 2. f4 exf4 3. Nf3 Nf6 is Carlsen, Magnus (2863) 0-1 Ding, Liren (2791), Carlsen Invitational Preliminary, 30th April 2020 If Ding plays Nf6 on move 3, against the world champion, then maybe this is a refutation to the Kings Gambit?

yes, it is. The idea is to go d5 next and later attack with g5, once the center closes down.

Eric can you play a game of losing chess please? Regular chess rules apply but there are added rules which is if a person loses all pieces accept king they win, if they get checkmated they win. And if a piece is available to take and your not in check or it doesnt put you in check etc. Not an illegal move you HAVE to take it
