This is a snippet taken from episode Episode 005: "The BEST Performance Modifications You Can Make?" with Grant Hosking from @honeddevelopments723.
Topics discussed are the reason why Honed was created and the philosophy behind what parts Honed decided to make. The biggest errors people make when modifying cars and what can actually prove to be the biggest gains with modifications.
Another key point discussed is the approach of tuning car setups for the track vs. the road and the biggest compromises that need to be considered.

Downsides to a double wishbone that no one wants to talk about is the multitude of failure points that comes along with not only tuning but in the instance of a part failure and damage. A McPherson is, in some cases, much more convenient when it comes to trouble shooting and damage repair. Thus the reason they are the go to choice in rally.

Macpherson strut always seems to feel less rigid(smoother over bumps. Less steering precision) in my opinion.

9 times out of 10 you're generally just dealing with a cheaper car and cheaper suspension to begin with. So of course

Well macpherson struts are generally in low end and cheap cars while double wish bone are generally in expensive and sporty cars so other factors like the quality of materials shocks joint and tires are also a lot higher quality then cars that tend to come on struts making the difference even more pronounce.

Im designing a wishbone setup for my car at the moment, originally came with from macpherspn and rear multibeam, both of which have been a horrendous mix for tight corners but great for highway driving

always wondered why BMW M cars stuck with mcpherson setups when double wishbone has more advantages at that price point

Same reason it always is with German cars, it's cheaper.

I think space savings and packaging is a big deal. The double wishbones take up more physical space. I’m just spit balling though as I can’t speak for BMW’s engineering team.

@@drewski5730 just realized that invigorating wishbones also requires $$$ and weight to make the additional mounting points structurally sound

@@slickest123452 BMW typically doesn’t use a traditional MacPherson suspension associated with budget cars. They use a more complex dual pivot design, using two lower control arms rather than a single one. This allows for the possibility of camber gain in compression and more space for larger brakes.

Cost factor plus being a big engine Front engine car double wishbone we’ll make packaging more challenging cars with double wishbone are often cars with mid engine layout.

MacPherson it's more cheaper and weaker, wishbone it's more expensive and stronger, top of the line cars have wishbone or multilink...

I much prefer Macpherson. Less moving parts, less weight, and plenty strong enough. I can't tell a benefit when driving, even spirited driving. Unless you actually race at a racetrack, with a actually race car, you won't benefit from it either.

The rears are McPherson. The front isnt. Someone said something about the bmw calculate something to make the cars pivot or give it a feel. I am not sure what makes a great suspension but from driving different cars over the years not all set ups are created equal

True, in a Macpherson set-up, the strut takes all of the load, but that's its job. In a double-wishbone set-up, all that load goes through the lower ball joint, which leads to accelerated failure.

That's usually do to poor maintenance, or people putting excessively high spring rates, and lowering on factory balljoints.

@@804MRMANother than inspection there's no maintenance of lower ball joints just like a double wish bone set up.Anything that goes away from factory specs like lowering will wear suspension components out faster even in a double wishbone set up.
