Especially giving the cultural context the statement was said. In the 1960’s, in the Catholic Church, from a nun to a priest, without a 3rd party nonetheless. Someone willing to even sacrifice themselves for their convictions is powerful beyond measure.

The cinematography gives many hints. The way the founder of the school faces against Merly Streep's character- on the side of Seymour Phillip Hoffman. The way his character says "no" when asked if he gave donald miller wine, but nods as if to say yes. The doubt in this movie is not about whether the priest is a child rapist- that is made clear. The doubt is the Sister's relationship with god, if she can even believe in god and the church. That is the doubt.

Yes, that's it, exactly, Yoni. Her 'doubt' at the end where she explodes emotionally is the result of how much her faith, service, and conviction to her lifelong 'calling' in the Catholic Church has essentially, failed her. There was no justice had, and righteousness did not conquer evil on this one. Some people are destroyed by such egregious realities. I think she was devastated, but not destroyed.

Sister Aloysius is a staunchly conservative, traditional religious. She clearly won this exchange with Flynn. If she was so sure, why didn't she have him kicked out of the Church? Or create enough of a scandal to force the Church to remove him. She said that she was willing to step outside of the Church and throw her vows and faith away because she was so convinced of Flynn's wrongdoing. Her doubt is in herself. She knows and saw the lengths she was willing to go to destroy another human being under the most questionable circumstances and finally breaks because she has put up a front for Sister James, Flynn and even herself as being this righteous defender of her faith only to recognize she threw it all by the wayside to essentially pursue a personal vendetta. She doesn't care about anything that happened. She wanted Flynn gone.

He wouldn't have tried to gain sympathy by trying to make comparison between the two of them and the act of wrong doing. If he's innocent, why make reference to doing wrong and needing to be forgiven🤔 There is evidence, if you're paying attention. And she was🙏🏽 What a story, glad I FINALLY watched this. Everyone did beautifully, but Meryl and Viola gave me chills and brought me to tears. Love when characters make you feel and draw you into their feelings. Love pieces that make me think.

This movie was incredible.....Firstly the screenplay was the real winner for me. But a close second was the powerhouse performances by the whole cast. Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman (RIP), Amy Adams and the amazing Viola Davis. Everyone played their characters so well. What I truly enjoyed was the narrative and the resonating the message.... without proof there should be doubt, I loved the sermon by Father Flynn about gossip... it tied in so well (obviously intentional)...Who knows if he was guilty or not... we will never know and that ultimately was the whole point of the movie.

I don't think he did it. I think the "things that are beyond her understanding" was that he's a gay man. I think he took a liking to Donald because he knew he was as well and was trying to befriend him. Knowing how difficult it was. I think that's the "there are things I cannot say". And I think the doubts she has at the end are if she did a good thing because he was the one man that was kind to a tortured boy. And, if he did it, that he wasn't punished. So that leaves doubt in her faith in her establishment. I love this movie and it's got one of the best casts of all time. Streep should have won best actress and Viola Davis for Best Supporting. I can't recall if Hoffman (RIP) was nominated and if so, who he was up against but wow. So powerful.

Father Flynn - a textbook manipulator.
@satoshisasada4656
@satoshisasada4656 6 жыл бұрын
Zoë Evans How do you mean? There are signs and that very conversation that indicate his homosexuality, which was frowned upon by the Church at that time, hence the "There are things I cannot say [...] there are things beyond your knowledge". Furthermore, Donald's mother mentions her son's nature which would cause him to be beaten up or worse by his father. Father Flynn acts as a protector, and he is misjudged because he is protected by the Church, a patriarchal institution, as he receives a promotion when he leaves. His resignation points out guilt of something, but possibly about the impossibility to come out of the closet.
@zoeevans6410
@zoeevans6410 6 жыл бұрын
Satoshi Sasada Hi, I understand your interpretation of this, and its validity, and I agree with what you say. However my take on Father Flynn is that he systematically manipulates everyone around him to get what he wants. IMO he is the classic predator - he observes people and their beliefs, personalities, fears, peccadillos etc, and he uses that to further his own ends. What he really wants is a system of 'omerta' so he can do as he pleases. In this instance, he projects his bad deeds onto Sister Aloysius by making her feel guilty about her past sins, as he knows her desperate need to think of herself as righteous. With Sister James he plays on her naturally loving, empathetic personality, and her fear of thinking badly of others. With the old reactionary priests, he makes them laugh with misogynistic jokes (even though he is highly attached to the notion of himself as a progressive and an egalitarian). With Donald he offers him the idea of protection from a kindred spirit. He's a port in the storm for the other boys who are frightened of Sister Aloysius, etc. Flynn is all things to all people. I've really over-thought this - but I suppose that's the point of the film!
@satoshisasada4656
@satoshisasada4656 6 жыл бұрын
Zoë Evans I thought that he tried to connect with Aloysius by asking if she did sin. He does not use it to make her feel guilty, but rather to seek empathy as she incarnates this austere and authority character. She cannot allow herself to do so, because her vision of the world is very manichaean, she only deals in absolutes. Flynn's conversation with the other churchmen represents Flynn's spirits: he is more jovial and warm-hearted than Aloysius, which resonates somehow with his ethos to have the Church more progressive . They do make a sexist joke, but it is a joke. Flynn does not look down on women in the movie in my opinion.
@satomipanki
@satomipanki 5 жыл бұрын
So I would interpret this as no one can point their finger to other one since everyones's got sin. This was exactly his argument to contrarest the sister's "have you done something bad to a child". Without being too bright, one can conclude that this was not a person's bad actions competitions, to make everyone considerate of ech other. Aloysius may not be objetively a rightgeous person, but she has the job to protect the children. A job she claims to do to the extent of departing from God's side. Her morals are not competing with the one's of the father, as he tried to implied manipulatively to seek for emphaty, a child's intgrity is at stake, keeping in mind the society of the time. Also the father's criteria is not of guidance, but of impliying an UNDERpremise that just because donald is gay, it would be alright to have a pedophile relationship, or that everyone should accept his "kind" of love, disrearding how the child feels, gay or straight. Sister Aloysius is not against homosexuallity as the father would also tried to make us believe, with the intolerance dogma [even thought he makes it clear that those types of conclusions about him shoud be keep secret just in case], sister Aloysius is a warrior of predators in spite of her admitted vulnerable weak woman possition. She may be not perfect, she may have commited sins in her past, she may not be popular and feared by students, she may not be warm publicly, she may be risking so much for being a woman not following the catholic structure, but she will Not Stop enduring her fight towards a lier. Wow. This whole scene is a simil to a fight of a woman against evil that chills my spine. *excuse my english.
@BrownRiceBunny1
@BrownRiceBunny1 5 жыл бұрын
I would agree. He tries to use every trick in the book to try to break her. Telling her that her class submits to his class - maybe even his class is closer to God in a way that she will never be - , tries to find her greatest guilt and distract her by having her focus on her greatest setback all the while saying his is just a trifle, he uses a loud voice and continually propping up the boy as if his downfall will mean the downfall of the boys which will ultimately be her fault. His charisma fooled everyone else making Sister Aloysius look like someone who is not only against change but trying to thwart it. Sister James trusted in his charisma - which is another way to manipulate people - so she would advocate for him while he was away. Textbook.

At the end when she cries that she has doubts she does not mean doubts about whether the father was a paedophile. She already knew he was. It is her faith she doubts. She was an almost lifelong committed member of the Catholic Church. She believed in the church's purity, infallibility and in obedience to it's laws and customs she showed herself to be a strict conformist to the church. Despite her seemingly hard nature she had eal compassion not just for the students but for her fellow nuns too shows by he protection of the nun who was going blind. She was a perfect example of a good nun and despite being under the rule of the patriarchy of the Catholic Church she was a credit to the Church noted by her position in the church as head mistress with authority. Her crisis of faith was borne from the realisation that despite telling the monsignor about the incident and despite the father confessing to her and requesting the suggested transfer he was PROMOTED instead of demoted or fired. It no doubt made her wonder how pure and holy the Church leadership and institution actually was and is not uncommon an experience for members of the Catholic Church when exposed to the realities of the evil that members on authority positions and the crimes and perversions they have been found guilty of committing. It is enough to give anyone a serious crisis of faith. At the end her cross shows pointing to the fact that this has even caused her to have doubt in GOd himself to allow such evil men to exist.

Hoffman was bizarrely nominated in the Best Supporting Actor category for the Academy Awards rather than Best Actor, presumably in a lame studio attempt to garner the more 'winnable' accolade for him or, more to the point, for themselves. I love how this movie never gives you any proof either way. Yes, Fr. Flynn could have abused Donald, given him wine, and the lied and lied. But it's also possible that he was a closeted gay man and thought that Donald was also gay (like Donald's father does) and tried to act as a confidante, and that Donald did really steal the wine. Maybe the other student who flinched near Fr. Flynn was abused by another priest and is triggered by the presence of any priest. Any evidence for either scenario is circumstantial. I read that only PSH was told if his character was guilty or not

This is why people use faith as a way to excuse or punish whatever they don't like or agree with. They twist their interpretation of their faith to get away with things instead of using the rules and faith that they have chosen. You can't love your neighbour while condemning them to hell for being gay. You can't cheat on your wife but vilify someone else for doing the same.

It is a device of the play and it’s title. Yet there is no doubt that the priest indeed molested the child. The live play is far more clear about this vibe the film has starry performers creating a somewhat more distracting passionate display. With all we know of child sex abuse it is the very absurdity of doubt that the predators create in order to get away with these dark crimes. Strong performances here and an excellent script transfer from the legit theatre to the silver screen.

Okay I finally saw the movie all the way through after watching a ton of clips. And I have to say... I think these scene shows that yes, he feels guilty of something. But I don’t think he’s guilty of molesting anyone. But that he relates to the young boy being gay himself. That is why he couldn’t answer the question she was asking him. He didn’t want to come out of the closet.

Every one concerned about who's right and who's not into this film, but for me the film maker goes really far when he exposes what's going on in churches and furthermore he's taking off the holiness cover of them... It's like judging them without being straight forward and in the same time giving the whole matter of homosexuality a legitimacy since according to this film it's a common practice among priests and nuns.

Love Heath Ledger but had the man lived he definitely would’ve still been nominated for The Dark Knight but Hoffman should have won best supporting actor for Doubt. Incredible performance.

What a fucking tour de force this film was. This scene is two people talking and it leaves viewers with white knuckles and balled stomachs.

Joseph Bar Paulo Moises watch it again there are two white boys who they heavily hint are the real victims . One pulls away from the priest the other acts out in class and cries . He says he commited a big mortal sin. I truly believe he was guilty just the nun zeroed in on the victim
