In the scene: Sister James (Amy Adams), Father Brendan Flynn (Philip Seymour Hoffman), Sister Aloysius Beauvier (Meryl Streep)
About Doubt:
Sister Aloysius Beauvier, the rigid and fear-inspiring principal of the Saint Nicholas Church School, suffers an extreme dislike for the progressive and popular parish priest, Father Flynn. Looking for wrongdoing in every corner, Sister Aloysius believes she's uncovered the ultimate sin when she hears Father Flynn has taken a special interest in a troubled boy. Without a shred of proof or evidence except her moral certainty, Sister Aloysius begins a crusade to both unearth the truth and expunge Flynn from the school, igniting a battle that threatens to tear apart the Church and school with devastating consequences.

She does her best with this pretty mediocre material. The poor editing, lighting and script do not help. Streep doesn't do her typical chewing on the scenery, but she still gives it a good gumbing at least.

The atmosphere of the movie is really good, like they are real people with real lives, its awful what is sugested in the story, but the world of the movie, the lives of the nuns, the school, the church, its comforting, i think its because of how its directed, there is a quietness to it

The way the blonde boy looks at Father Flynn (or rather doesn’t look at him) seems quite telling. That actor has obviously been directed that his character holds some negative feelings for Father Flynn.

Real easy solution here - never leave a single child alone unsupervised with any adult who is not a parent (and even then unfortunately things can still happen). Too many creeps out there and anyone who insists on being alone with a child is immediately flagged as a potential violator.

The biggest villain in the film is the institution that allows so much power to the priests and the men who they answer to while the nuns are subservient and children and parents are not able to hold to account such priests that abuse their power. Despite how fierce and determined Meryl’s character is, she plainly states that in another situation she was only able to stop the abuse because of a priest that had the power and willingness to help her, because her status as a woman meant she could not go against a priest.

According to research, the rate of child molestation and rape in Protestabt churches are way way way higher than in Catholic Church. 600% higher. (Bayuk T., 2009) Because the Catholic Church has structure and heirarchy, victims have a way to tell the crime. In Protestant churches, victims rarely report the crime because the Pastor who mostly rape children, has all the power in his church.

I actually think it's a great movie but agree that Meryl Streep's performance was actually a downside to the whole production. Her portrayal of Sister Beauvoir was a ham-handed attempt at painting the picture of the very traditional but worldly aware senior nun. The character deserved far more subtlety, especially in light of her rmachinations that cause Flynn to leave the school later in the story.

Sighhhhhhhhh,..........fantastic movie, repeat FANTASTIC movie. Although it's eternally HEARBREAKING that such an incredibly talented Actor, Phillip Seymour Hoffman ended up killing himself with DRUGS. 😖

He was an addict. Have a little more compassion and a lot less judgment, please.

@@l.a.3479 I extolled his talent and used the word “heartbreaking” in all caps. How is that “judgmental” or not compassionate?? Saying he killed himself is not judgmental. It is a fact.

@@greeneyedwarlock882 That's not the issue. What bothers me is how you put "drugs" in all-caps. Also, didn't he accidentally OD, not suicide?

@@l.a.3479 I come from a family of addicts and never touched any of it and am as compassionate and Liberal as anyone can be but no, I don't agree with you. Your desire to somehow neutralize deadly drugs by not simply not typing the word in caps mystifies me. I will also neverrr believe that he did not know he could kill himself.
