SET Over SET For $561,800! Patrik Antonius Falls Right Into Tom Dwan's Trap

It's a classic cooler situation. Kings versus tens in a 3-bet pot. This time, however, there are several twists and turns. Tom Dwan slowplays his pocket kings, unaware that he's crushed by Patrik Antonius's flopped set. The turn brings even more surprises, and the pot swells to a record size for Poker After Dark in this insane high stakes cash game.
As always on Poker Hands, Doug breaks down each street of action and shares his thoughts on how each player made their decisions.

I like how respectful Dwan is whenever he wins a big pot, especially in cooler situations. I don't think I've ever even seen him celebrate one. He was the absolute classiest guy on the table in televised poker. I repeat - on the table, in case I get replies to this re: jungleman etc.

Doug if you had been watching this entire session you'd see durr when raising or 3betting pots preflop was checking when he missed flops and he was missing alot of flops so I think his idea was to check to induce a bet from antonious. It made it look like durr was just trying to steal the pot from the straddle with a variety of hands, also gives balance to durr who may be checking JJ AK OOp on this board vs Antonious's 3bet calling range against Durr. It also balances his range by checking overpairs on this board and Im sure he doesn't do this enough against Antonious (they likely have ALOT of history) and so he checks so as to not play his hand as face up especially because he was checking alot of flops after being the agressor preflop. So it's hard to critique this aspect of his play given we don't know the entirety of his history against Antonius and given the overall dynamic if durr checking alot of flops in this live session. Most of the time he was checking & check calling because he had been missing alot of boards so he wants to balance that by checking his overpairs in this scenario. Antonious is not calling his 3bet with a standard 3bet calling range 6 handed, they have too much dynamic with each other. So we can't even assume that QQ JJ TT are the main hands in Antonious's 3bet calling range especially in position against Tom Dwan. But the check on the flop is brilliant it allows antonious to be bettimg with a bigger range of his 3bet calling range in position which consists of alot of suited connectors, Suited aces, and underpairs to the board.

There's an Aussie Millions episode where he sucks out after going all in KK vs. Dwan's AA. There's also a PAD episode where they go all in in the dark, Patrick wins the first times they do it, and then sits out the rest of the flips (of which there were several). All in all, I think he came out okay on televised poker. If you search the 2+2 forums, someone, somewhere, actually calculated everyone's televised winnings.

Love these videos and to hear your thoughts on specific actions. Notably, I don't think you've said anything about the decision to straddle, which has been a key element in a couple of these monster hands you've presented. It would be illuminating to hear your specific thoughts on straddling, especially as it relates to specific players, situations, and dynamics.
@christophermoyer6103
@christophermoyer6103 7 жыл бұрын
I would even be interested in a whole video about straddling. Your audience likely knows the basics - that it's a -EV move in a vacuum. But even in the low/mid stakes live games I play in, it looks to me like it can be +EV and maybe even very +EV when taking certain table dynamics into consideration. Would like your advanced take on the subject.
@overgme
@overgme 7 жыл бұрын
At that particular table, it would have been very +EV for both Dwan and Antonius to have everyone doing it (and I think this was one of the games were it was "on" for everyone . . . although Dwan would do it on his own from time to time during these games). Dwan and Antionius were both better players, and deeper, than the rest of the table, so anything which increased the stakes would have been to their benefit.

Yes which makes the check call on the flop make more sense. From Dwans perspective check call is the best play, I disagree with Doug on the flop. Also, Viffer pretty much would have had to go all in with his stack size pre flop. Would be silly to just flat.

and it makes sense that Dwan could put Antonius on a flopped set, based off what happened preflop. Antonius raised from 1st to act position, then flat-called Dwan's 3-bet ... so that probably put him in the 10's/JJ/QQ range (Dwan having KK reduced the number of AK combos Antonius could have) ... and the board hit two of those three hands I mentioned.

Epic video once again. So, About Tom's line on the flop. Obv your arguments make sense btw. Could he maybe be pot controlling or checking to induce thinking he had the best hand? And the check-raise jam on the turn I mean he loses to AJ and J9s like you said but thats about it right? I guess he put Antonious on a set or KQ and discounted AK, since he has 2 and one on the flop and maybe felt he had value there since he called pre and fired flop and turn...well Im sure he has his on way of thinking poker.

I can't really call this a trap. Dwan check called the flop believing he was way ahead. He was just fortunate to hit his two outer on the turn thus creating a cooler of a hand. I mean, Antonious could maybe get away from it, but his turn bet pretty much committed him to the pot. Obviously a set is the only hand he doesn't want Dwan to have as that means 1 out.

BartoszKosiarski With a set there, Antonious is 100% committed after his turn bet is raised all in. I mean, the only hands beating him are obviously higher sets (2 possible combos), and 2 possible straights. So, even if up against straight, it's a must call.

Hey Doug. Thanks for review. Not that it's too important but I think QQ is also can be in Dwan's range. You didn't mention that one.
@fedea82
@fedea82 7 жыл бұрын
True, I noticed that as well. In Antonious shoes I would lean towards a fold. There are 28 combos that beat us (QQ, KK, and AJ which definitely falls under Dwan's squeezing range), and the fact that Dwan is superaggressive SCREAMS a monster hand with the unusual passive-aggressive line he took (check/call flop, check/jam turn). Having said that, one has to ponder about that night's table dynamic until that point...maybe Dwan had been bluffing and shoving back and forth, which wouldn't surprise me.

Fede A it really looks queens, kings or jacks to me, with dwans style I really think he would lead with any kind of straight draw on the flop
@fedea82
@fedea82 7 жыл бұрын
I agree Joakim, Tom would lead with a straight draw, maybe...Or maybe he would be scared of getting check raised on the flop, Antonious is pretty aggressive too after all, and on this flop a reasonable squeeze calling range in position connects almost 100% of the time to allow him to value bet or semibluff...(J9, JT, TT, JJ, JQ, QQ, KQ, AJ, AQ...or even slowplayed AA), so after a check raise on the flop from said range Tom wouldn't know if he's ahead or behind. Also, these two guys in particular have played thousands of hands online against each other, so that's another reason why Dwan might have chosen to change his lines. The leveling between players of this caliber goes beyond what meets the eye.

The check on the flop was masterful! Drrr has such a wide range of starting hands that when he has a real hand he wants action. If Patrick shoves on a post flop bet, Drrr is in a tough position because what could Patrick have other than a set. Once again analysis of hands is so easy when you know the outcome, your specialty in these videos, and saying you like this or that play is ridiculous because in the moment you wouldn’t do anything that you said. Guess that’s why you “retired”, your to good lol. Lot of Hellmuth in you Doug!

Why is Antonius not taking into concideration, that this hand is a Polker Hand? In Polker Hands often monsters are featured. Having said that, it is much more likely to put Tom on AJ or even a Full House. Clear fold...
@dennisreynolds2122
@dennisreynolds2122 7 жыл бұрын
Much more likely to put Tom Dwan on AJ or full house? You can't just assume your opponent called 30K post flop and hit a gut shot straight with the AJ. Also, even with AJ for the straight, that would give Antonious 10 outs to the full house on the river and with the turn bet and money in the pot, you can never fold there as you are pot committed and have to hope to hit. Now, your second part was "EVEN A FULL HOUSE". A full house is impossible on the board, only higher sets, which while unfortunate is considered a cooler and Antonious is paying those off as well.

Doug that check call is beautiful, I do that at times to ,sometimes you want to win a small pot or lose a small pot with an over pair ..not a wonderful flop for kings in that situation and trips and big draws that could re raise if you bet out on the flop .Dwan has the experience to know what the best thing to do was on that flop and he did it ,when you could only have two outs on the flop good to keep the pot small there ,perfect play from Dwan plain n simple

I guess Dwan could bluff with J10 and QJ as well after checking the flop, honestly I think it's hard not to assume that you have enough equity in the pot vs Dwan in Antonius spot. We need to find ~5-6 bluff combos in Dwans range, just put Dwan's standard 3 bet hand J4o in there and it's covered two fold!

These spots are sick and it doesn't get easier when you run the numbers of your set against your opponent's expected range. As a non-live player who has never faced a straddle, thinking over preflop is an interesting situation. We have Antonius playing what we would expect to be an RFI CO range who then faces a reraise from HJ. We know Dwan (#SaveTom) is unpredictably wide, so we might not be inclined to be too worried. Given the strength of pocket 10s preflop, we're happy to call. Tom's View: ========== Once Antonius calls HJ's reraise, we can narrow his range. As we're in HJ with pocket kangs, we look forward to seeing a dry flop. We've played a lot of hands against Antonius and he knows we're loose, so we'll give him a range that includes the Upswing raise/fold hands. We'll remove AA & KK from his range, as we expect these hands to 4-bet. (I don't know PA's tendency to 4-bet QQ, so we'll just leave that and JJ in his 3-bet flatting range.) Against PA's expected calling range, Dwan sees himself as a huge favourite with 77% equity. Immediately upon seeing the flop, our equity against CO's range inches upward to nearly 80%. We're feeling trappy (I personally wouldn't), so we check. CO bets and this gives us a chance to evaluate what hands offer potential to either beat us or improve. CO's semi-bluffs include AKo, AKs, KJs and J9s. 44, TT, QQ and QTs all currently beat us. Time to call and play the turn. The Ks OTT against CO's expected flop-continuation range gives us ~79% equity and we're happy enough. That said, there is a risk that AJo, AJs and J9s all got there and these hands are all very much in CO's range. Despite the risk of those nutted hands trumping us, we've got loads of equity and we're happy to get our money in hoping to get unstuck. Patrik's View: =========== We open our TT happy enough to see Viffer on the BTN calling, but taking a moment to consider Dwan's 3-bet from HJ. With our history and his dossier of crazy bluffs, we're happy enough to call and see a flop to re-evaluate our strategy. The flop brings us what looks to be Teh Nutz against HJ's general RFI range. We might be inclined to tighten HJ's range given the reraise, but #SaveTom is unpredictable and can show up with nearly anything. Against a generic RFI range from HJ, we expect we have 98% equity and crush just about everything. With Dwan deferring to us OTF, we lead out feeling more confident about our strength, but not yet removing any hands from his range. We chop with TT and he's only beating us on this flop with QQ. We're good, so far. The Ks OTT drops our equity by a chunk. Dwan has all the Ax, Jx and 9x in his range to make the nuts. We're a little less sure of our situation, but we can't forget HJ's check OTF. Was it trappy? Was it a semi-bluff hoping to improve and didn't? Was it a semi-bluff hoping to improve and did? Ultimately, we think we're just way ahead and we bet for value. Durr gives us that throw-up in our mouth moment by going all-in and committing our stack should we decide to call. We think we're the favourite here. Sets are hard to come by and we expect HJ's range to only come up with trips 5% of the time. Heavy sigh and call. TL;DR takeaway: I love analyzing these hands with emphasis on playing our ranges correctly. When running the numbers, I consistently see where we need to be calling off lest we be folding our premium hands too frequently and, therefore, leave ourself vulnerable to exploit. If we're always playing our range correctly, we can expect to be profitable in the long term.

hey Doug, what would u do in a hypethetical situation where, you have TPTK, theres no flushes or straights possible, the turn went check check and u bet about 1/3rd pot for value because you suspect your opponent has a weak hand and want to get called,, you're facing an aggressive opponent who raises because he views the small bet as weakness.. do you call or fold?
@least_bw1775
@least_bw1775 7 жыл бұрын
Ric Poitras please don't tell me you folded. it'd be one thing if it was an ultra tight player, as most of his range raising on the river is 2 pair+. against an aggressive player, however, it's entirely possibly they're playing with 2nd pair, top pair lower kicker, etc. you just have to call and if you get coolered by a set or two pair so be it.

its not a specific scenario that I can remember, but it does happen often as I try to go for thin value sometimes, I usually make the call depending on the players, theres been times ive induced a bluff and other times they slow played a better hand

Good video Doug! Is my line of reasoning sound in your opinion?
@rbaddict2947
@rbaddict2947 2 жыл бұрын
Dwan bluff's so much it wouldn't be smart to throw away sets unless you had some sort of read that he had a better hand. This is heads up poker, You're saying Dwan's calling that much money on the flop with a gut shot and/or an ace? And Antonious would prob think Dwan would have bet KK (very clever for Dwan to check) on the flop so in his mind it's hard to put Dwan on that hand. What if Antonious had AQ? That would eliminate 2 outs for Dwan, so basically I would think if I Antonious put himselef in Dwan's shoes he prob would fold AJ so from Antonious perspective that elminates both KK and AJ...I don't blame Antonious for the call, I think he was just unlucky and he can't read Dwan. If you're not willing to lose all your chips dont go heads up against someone you can't read because you could just get unlucky and lose it all like he did. That's why poker is great, you can out think your opponent but he can still beat you with luck.

@@rbaddict2947 the issue is not if Dwan bluffs, of course he bluffs a lot. The issue here is mathematical, since Dwan has so many value combos beating us (28!), it's tough even for him to bluff enough+ value bet worse enough here to make our call break-even, let alone profitable. I could be wrong, since I literally didnt watch this hand in 4 yrs lol....but I think that the math was just too unfavourable for us here.
@rbaddict2947
@rbaddict2947 2 жыл бұрын
@@fedea82 But if you read what I wrote, in Antonius mind he's likely eliminating AJ and likely KK (this is in his mind considering the different scenarios and range of Dwan as everything played out on the Turn because obviously & unfort Dwan did have KK).... so if I were Antonius I'm thinking only thing that Dwan could have that would beat me is J9 & QQ so it's likely he's either bluffing (with hand like JJ) or semi bluffing with KJ/AK/JQ/J10 or over betting KQ or maybe has 44 which in all cases we have him beat. So it's 16 combinations that are likely if I'm Antonius reading the situation when Dwan goes all in on the turn that would beat me. Also, Dwan's the type of player that would either check raise AJ on the flop if he had that hand or straight semi bluff on the flop so it makes it even less likely he has AJ. Sort of tough to put Dwan on J9 too as kind of weird he 3 bets pre flop though its possible cuz Dwan does that stuff. If Dwan senses weakness he'll make those semi bluff all in raises sometimes so there's that scenario in Antonius mind also which make it even MORE important to call. Watch it again, Antonius just got unlucky. Ok, sorry about all the words...cheers

I agree. I think this is just one of those spots where Dwans image banks him a nice little return. I think Patrick realises that there aren't that many good bluff cards in this spot when Dwan decides to ship it for all the chips, at which point he's prob praying that Dwan is bluffing (in typical 'duuur fashion) that said, I'm not a huge fan of Dwans shove either. Given the action on both the flop and turn, both straights make for reasonable holdings and if Antonius does find a call, I think the worst hand that should be calling in that spot ought to be the J9. For those reasons, I'd be learning towards a check call with top set. Supremely done as Douglas!
