Water on real down will make it mold and also encourage bacterial growth. Real down is all organic (as in not synthetic) which means like anything that was alive at some point it can rot away. Moisture will do that. That's why you need to dry clean it and it's very important to keep down dry. If you take good care of it it will last your decades.

While some down comforters can be washed in a machine, they will need to go in a commercial sized front loading washer and then take a VERY long time to completely dry even in over sized dryers. I use and suggest dry cleaners and only when really necessary. They never seem quite as fluffy as before washed.

Yes you can. But as the other comment says it needs to be in a huge washer, run it twice the second just with water and the dryer you have to run it like 3 times and move the comforter several times when drying

Hey there, I know this is late but I wanted to let you know that you can also search by companies that use the RDS (Responsible Down Standard). This means that they guarantee the down is a byproduct of birds that were killed for the food industry rather than plucked live which is more akin to torture. This may not sound like a great improvement to some people but I would sleep better knowing that the bird was humanely(at least somewhat) killed rather than made to withstand such repeated pain. Thankfully it appears that hayneedle does in fact use the RDS, at least for the first comforter I found and searched for. Also, in case you happen to ever want to buy a comforter that costs as much as a car, Elder Duck Down is free of those pesky moral dilemmas. It's a very high quality down from Iceland. These ducks line their nests with it and once the chicks are all grown and the nest is abandoned, the down in harvested. No killing, plucking, or harassing involved. Just a sneaky scavenger hunt for abandoned nests.

You know, just because some places rip the down off in barbaric fashions doesn't mean everyone does -> there ARE places that do it more humanely. IMO rather than throw the baby out with the bathwatter, supporting those places that do it humanely might be a good way to go, IMO.
