Balint is 21 years old. Last year he developed Depersonalization Disorder after accidentally smoking a HHC vape. He experienced symptoms like existential thoughts, feeling like he was living in a dream, and emotional numbness even for loved ones and friends.
Balint struggled with DPDR and its symptoms for about a year. But fortunately he has since made a complete recovery. A he wrote to me in a recent email, "I’ve successfully recovered from DPDR and you were a very big help during the journey. I would love to help other people by telling my story!"
In this brand new extended interview Balint tells me all about his experience with and recovery from Depersonalization Disorder.

Very similar symptoms I have. When I went to GP I said "I feel dizzy and disconnected from reality". She sent me to vestibular therapist and somehow he found out that I have vestibular issues. For two months I believed him but when I found this channel DPDR resonated more with me. Now when I look back, everything makes sense. I have had very stressful few months and then a panic attack from nowhere triggered DPDR. Hands down worst experience in my life. Darkest times ever. I am 14 weeks into this but last week was very decent. Tinnitus and floaters are still persistent and when I get into high stress situation DPDR kicks in. It just shuts my brain down, spreads some numbing cream on it and puts a fish bowl on my head :D Anyway, I hope I forget about this soon. Keep healing people. P.S. Do patterns irritate anyone? For example carpet or striped shirts etc. They seem to be so weird, very hard to look at them.

how can I not think about the DP/DR distracting myself, if I no longer care about anything about my life, because before entering it I had some bad news that I already couldn't get over and it brought me anxiety, and it had already created a depression in me I wasn't interested in anything anymore, and in this state I smoked a joint for the first time which made me enter the DP, now I've been in it for a month how can I not think about it if I no longer have anything to distract me since I don't I don't care about anything, and this feeling of zeroing out the emotions of DP doesn't make me face the cause of my depression before smoking, am I stuck like this?? How can I do it? Should I try to resolve the cause of the depression first and then go back to not thinking about the PD and making it disappear?? Thank you

Hey, thanks for your comment 😊 I know DPDR can be scary but just remember that it’s a natural reaction to stress and anxiety, and people experience it all the time. The National Institute on Mental Illness estimates that up to 75% of people experience at least one depersonalization / derealization episode in their lives. It's part of your brain's natural defence mechanism and usually it only lasts a few seconds or minutes at a time. It's only when it's focused on as a separate problem (feeling like you're going crazy / in a dream etc) that it can turn into a feedback loop with the anxiety that caused it in the first place. But no matter what caused it or how long you've had it, you can always switch it off completely by stopping that anxious feedback loop. Make sure to carefully read through all the articles and info on my website at www.dpmanual.com and my book The Depersonalization Manual. And if you would like to speak to a medical professional please don't hesitate to do so. I would recommend finding an anxiety specialist if possible as they will likely be more familiar with DPDR 👍

Sorry to hear this, and what you are going through bothers me. You are focusing the wrong focus: You are dividing your focus into two parts, half on life and the other half on your thinking about life. Before you got sick, you were focusing on only one thing, which is life. You are afraid that you will be stuck and not be able to experience any feeling, even joy, so when you start to take your mind out of this loop and thoughts, your feelings and thoughts will return and you will integrate with life without you noticing it. The treatment is not waiting or wishing, because you will divide your focus on experiencing a feeling, but rather ignoring this situation, and over time, your feelings will return without you noticing it.

@@diartahazrolli9411 Yes, diverting attention to other things is very important .. ا cuz once you start forcing your mind out of the loop, your emotions come back by themselves without you even noticing it, and ironically that happens only when you stop checking if they're back (stop counting the days you have it). After all, the less questions you ask yourself and the less time you spend looking for answers, the quicker you will move on from this. So have patience and a great recovery!
