It's a MEDIUM format camera for CS not a sports camera. I'm interested in Dynamic Range, image quality, not autofocus speed.

I rented this camera 2 weeks ago. I've tried for my street photography shots. You just have to give up on autofocus and try manual focus. Since AF is very bad they should put focusing range ring on new lenses so we can try zone focusing. Or just get the older lenses if you are thinking to buy this camera. When you nail the focusing, the image quality you will get is amazing!!! I've never seen anything like this. Size makes difference. When you zoom in Lightroom, you can see how much details are there! Camera has the best grip of any camera ever. It is an excellent built camera all over. I wish they'd put little joystick pad on the back of the camera like Fuji. I took high iso shots during the night time, they look good too. I'm looking forward to try 907x. Please Hasselblad get the phase detection not contrast based AF and add little joystick pad on the back. Then you'll get much more Photographer buying your cameras. Till then you'll just get the photographers who are just into landscape and portraits

great summary of your experience. I disagree on PDAF. Fuji GFX100 has shown it can lead to grid lines in heavily-pushed areas, with some reviews saying it loses a full usable stop compared to GFX50. Panasonic & Leica have proven contrast detection can work well with modern computer vision, which seems clearly the correct compromise given the rest of the camera, vs. the alternative of making up data so the grid lines are visible much less often (but still fundamentally present). They need to write some good, fast code, or in the worst case an ASIC or FPGA. They don't need to compromise the sensor's image quality. Honestly, I do push this camera's envelope and miss shots because of its 1990s-style AF hunting, but 2/3 of my frustration would disappear if the camera would stop confirming AF lock on things that are not in focus. It will do this repeatably on, for example, christmas lights, which would not have happened with my 90s Nikon film SLR. The AF is a write-off as it stands and could probably be greatly improved without Panasonic-level algorithmic magic. I agree with you on zone focusing. I also don't appreciate the nonlinearity of focus-by-wire because, when focusing in the dark for a long exposure, I tend to rock across the focus point looking for the highest-contrast peak. The ring position needs to be meaningful without nonlinearity or play, like a video lens or Leica M lens, for this to work well. I also think they should not be holding back True Focus for H series. Their organization's raw capability is uneven compared to the competition, so they can't afford to cripple products while maintaining credibility and good will. Instead they should be evolving these strengths. Instead of withholding it, they could evolve it into a modern UI for something like automatic zone focusing (choose points at the front and the back of the focus region, have the camera automatically choose max aperture, taking field curvature into account) or focus stacking (automatically choose the number of frames needed for the aperture you specify, and execute them). These improvements may be more within reach for them than depth-from-defocus, and I would honestly appreciate them more.

I think you undersold just how *nice* this camera is in the hand. The ergonomics are stunningly good and the look and feel are unbelievable. Not long ago I compared it to the GFX 50R, it's closest competitor. The GFX is probably the better camera and the better system, but the 50R is a real clunker compared to the sleek Hasselblad. I'm sure the lack of a in-camera shutter help to make it as sleek as it is, and why the lenses are more expensive... Anyways, my point is, sometimes shooting experience matters more than specs and features.

I've reached for this camera several times, I have several friends who own the X1D V1 and shoot with it professionally. It's so beautiful and ergonomically friendly that it screams to be picked up. Another friend handed me his GFX 50R on two different occasions. I gave the clunky brick back both times immediately as it was really unappealing (to me). I'll take the well designed X1D II (with it's few shortcomings) over the clunky 50R any day of the week. BTW, I use many cameras Fuji included but I couldn't get on with the GFX 50R. So yeah I agree with you, shooting experience and handling matters.

Video was added as of the last update... Nothing will ever make this camera a sports, wildlife or action camera... or even a real video camera (though its nice to have decent 1080P now if you need it in a pinch)... but Hassy has done a good job ironing out the bugs and adding some features through Firmware updates... for landscape, architecture, posed portraits its hard to find better IQ even from the latest FF sensors... even for street with a little forethought and some manual zone focusing it works pretty well... I have a Sony A7r4, but still I find myself taking this camera and the 45mm F4P for hikes in the country and mountains or walks in the city...

I really want to like this camera. I really want. It’s absolutely beautiful, lenses are apparently great. Interface is gorgeous. But Hasselblad is an old school company, they don’t move fast enough. I want fast autofocus, I want Eye-AF, I want usable blackout, I want an EVF decent enough compared to the sensor resolution, I want high EVF magnification, I want fast lenses, I want more MP, etc. That’s what you want if you’re looking at this camera but you don’t get anything.
@jamiea8318
@jamiea8318 3 жыл бұрын
On two of those points: you mentioned the lenses being great but want more speed. They'd then be considerably larger and/or more expensive; it's a large sensor to cover. Regarding more megapixels, this thing is a resolution beast. Unless you're professionally printing incredibly large prints, it just wont pay off. One advantage that comes with this sensor is the incredible dynamic range and low light / long exposure capability, which is visible in photos at even web-sharing sizes. IMO it's a better trade off than just throwing higher megapixels at it for the sake of vanity metrics.

Most photographers don't know the benefits of 16bit raw files in comparison to the typical 14bit raw files. 16bit raw files permit greater processing of the dynamic range. Both the versions of Hasselblad X1D 50C are small medium format cameras that offer 16bit raw files. The Fujilfm GFX 50R and GFX 50S are small medium format cameras too but offer only 14bit raw files. The Fujifilm GFX100 offers 16bit raw files but it isn't a small medium format camera.

With this particular sensor, the advantages of 16 bit raw are marginal over what the GFX50 and Pentax 645Z offer. You can see the lab tests here: www.dpreview.com/reviews/hasselblad-x1d-50c/5

Having tested this camera, I can say it is truly a work of art! Sure, it’s not up to par for any fast shooting but I think still-life or other stationary style of photographers can be really happy with this camera. And the form factor certainly makes a big difference compared to any GFX counterpart, the Fuji bodies seem crude and bulky in comparison. If I had to choose, I’d pick up the X1D for a hike any day over a GFX S/R/100.

I really enjoyed Jordan's input on this review... On topic: I don't get this camera. What can this thing do that a full-frame camera cannot? I did look at the sample pictures, but I just do not see any difference to what an A7R III or IV might produce. Is there any advantage on the side of dynamic range or something else that would justify buying this?

@danieldougan269
@danieldougan269 4 жыл бұрын
This is the way software development is going, and not just for cameras. It's like that at my company as well. You put a minimum viable product out as a release and then listen to the features customers specifically ask for as upgrades so you don't waste time developing features nobody will use. The truth is, almost nobody will want to use this camera for video. That's just not what you buy a medium format camera. I imagine they will trot something out there for video eventually, but it won't be great.
@ScottJWaldron
@ScottJWaldron 4 жыл бұрын
@@danieldougan269 Like you were saying, probably few people will want to use this for video. I made the comment because it is odd to me that they put in a place holder. I personally consider the lack of finish on such a camera pretty sad. Especially since it appears to be a revision of the previous model. I also have done a lot of software development over the years. For contract work I do, you can bet that if tried to give a percentage of what I promised in a quote it wouldn't go well. While the situation is different, I'm not going to say positive things about half feature. I checked B&H, this camera is listed around $5.7k.

Really wanted to get this camera but ended up with the GFX50R. The Hasselblad is such a beautiful camera body. Its a shame you are not able to hit the focus (especially on the little girls eyes), ive never had an issue with focusing on the Fuji. The other thing i realized is the lenses for the H are super expensive. Im very curious if they are better than the Fuji equivalents. Anyway its a good time to be a photographer, waited decades for a an affordable MF Digital Camera 😁👍 Great Work and Keep the videos coming!

I just Px'd my GFX50s for this baby - and I wished I had gone down this route 1st - everything about it is class - the GFX is too big, too complicated and a little too gimmicky - but when it comes to the final result even my clients have noticed - thats when it matters the most - and no I didn't tell them!!!! I am not sure you can compare the GFX100 to this though - different price points by almost double - unless you factor in the cost of the lenses - then the Hass costs ten times more!!!!!! Nice review though

but higher price, and extremely limited function (comparatively), makes it the right choice for only a marginal few. They can't be making money yet on these. Definitely a promising line. Hope they get up to speed in time to not only be competitive, but even make profits- and money can drive R&D

I have one- I pre-ordered the day it was announced, back when it was supposed to ship in July. I got mine the first week of September. It's a very mixed bag- the AF is sort of a cruel joke, especially if your subject is backlit. The lenses are really pricey, and Hasselblad can't seem to keep to a ship date- the 35-75mm zoom has been delayed multiple times now, however impressive it seems, and I had quite a time waiting for my 80/1.9. This isn't my first digital Hasselblad- I came from an H4D-60 with full kit of lenses. After 3000+ very deliberate frames on the X1D II (largely location portraits and travel/architecture), the form factor is a winner, but I've used the GFX 50R enough to know that there's a lot more capability that can be wrung out of the now-ancient sensor in both of these cameras- face-detect AF, and more AF capability in general, are what I'm referring to here, as both have excellent IQ. The firmware has gotten much better since release- the AF isn't noticeably changed to me (though I've done all of the body + lens updates), but the camera's stability is vastly improved. I haven't had to take the battery out due to a system error in a while now. I haven't checked to see if the iPhone app works with the latest firmware release, but last I looked about a month ago, it was only compatible with Hasselblad's new iPad app. I don't think that anyone is buying this camera for video, but I'd like it if, months after release, they got the feature working. Lack of a tilt screen is a big weak point for me relative to a GFX, but the form factor and handling on the X1D II really are that much nicer, if you aren't price-sensitive. And, if you need the leaf shutter, this is the only game in town, short of stepping up to a Leica S or Phase One system. The lenses are crazy overpriced compared to what Fuji offers- you can't tell me that adding a leaf shutter should double the cost. Fuji has a really excellent system with outstanding lenses, but the experience feels as anodyne (to me) as working with a Sony body- the man/machine connection that I enjoy with the X1D II or my Leica gear just isn't present when using the button-festooned Fuji cameras. It's about a lot more than the spec sheet, for better or worse. The Hasselblad is often frustrating, but is undeniably beautiful and still brings me joy on a net basis. Despite being the second model they've built around this same sensor, it's still very much a work in progress. It's truly the Ferrari of cameras- you'll pay through the nose for something that's finicky but dead sexy, and those who can't do so probably won't understand it.

The GFX is a leaf shutter short of beating this camera in every conceivable way (in low light situations I’d take IBIS over that anyway) plus the GFX is supported by Elinchroms hi-sync (better than HSS) and thats the brand I’ve always used. The only competitive feature is the leaf shutter in the lenses (which makes them so expensive) providing fast sync speeds. I'd say leaf shutters aren't necessary and more, at least not with HSS. They are very expensive and require regular expensive maintenance - and if they fail you can't use it any more. As brilliant as leaf shutters are, they are also very cumbersome and a potential and very probable point of failure...
@c.augustin
@c.augustin 4 жыл бұрын
@@Crispy_Bee Regular maintenance - well, yes, but normally not that expensive (depends on who does it; it might be different with these modern electronic controlled leaf shutters). And they don't fail regularly (not that I heard of, but maybe modern leaf shutters are far inferior than the old ones that worked for decades). And I'm not aware of HSS features with large studio strobes - but I'm not a pro studio photographer dealing with this sort of equipment on a daily basis. (If a focal plane shutter fails, you can't use the camera body anymore, not with any lens; if a leaf shutter in a lens fails, you can't use this specific lens until it is repaired - both scenarios have their pain points.)

any of you complaining about autofocus (generally, not only about hasselblad) has ever considered practicing manual focus? i am a professional photographer working for 35 years now in this business - for the biggest international news agencies. i did a lot of sports with manual focusing, it just needs practice. the only cameras i use with af nowadays are the top models of sony and before canon for sports and fast (press)action. all the other assignments like reportages, documentations or portraits i shoot with manual focus - mostly with apertures from 0.95 to 1.4 with m-mount lenses, because of the benefit from the combination of inconspicuousness, haptics and image quality. maybe the one or the other shot would not be out of focus if would use af. but it is sure, that i will miss more pictures if i would use af in a lot of cases. first because the camera does not know where i want to have the plane of focus, secondly, because if i would have to shift around with the af-point, the situation will be gone before because i am faster in manual focusing than shifting the af-point with a joystick exactly to the point before focusing. so - as i wrote at the beginning, this is a plea for not to rely on af exclusively, if you have practice, manual focusing can bring pictures which af sometimes can not. ... and to mr.dpreview: with a porsche 911 you would not drive into rough terrain, neither would it make sense to compete with a landrover defender at the monaco grand prix.

With linear manual focus (like your M-Mount lenses) it’s possible to get great manual focus accuracy with a lot of practice. The Hasselblad uses a focus-by-wire system that makes it nearly impossible to get repeatable results shooting any moving subjects. This is part of why AF performance is so essential. I'm underwhelmed with this camera, honestly I thought it would have come out as an updated version of a poor product with a higher functioning sensor. I wouldn't even put down my Canon 5DS to pick this body up.

Do you think learning the craft might be useful on those occasions when, for example, your automatic eye detect goes on the fritz. Just an idea. I realise that most watching your channel will be point and shoot as that is what you talk about, but it could be useful.
@niccollsvideo
@niccollsvideo 4 жыл бұрын
Sure which is why for the portraits I took with flash I used manual focus extensively. Doesn't change the fact that the auto focus on this camera lacks the useful features that many other brands now incorporate. A Fuji GFX system for example would give users an effective eye detect focus and if you wanted to exercise your craft you could manual focus all day long too.

@@niccollsvideoHow commendable. Thank you. And you make a fair point that you focused manually when using the flash. Otherwise you could have concluded you were watching someone use a £5,000 camera as a point and shoot and complain that it's not very good at it. A spoof if you like. But of course you represent the bar in camera assessment that others can only strive to attain. Regards, Ian.

Night and day? The raw files or camera processed jpgs?A person who owns both or either camera will typically have use cases that and skill to have an output that matches intent. And compared to which output? GFX 100S or 50R? Not being combative just curious. I hear this usually not from users but from KZfaqrs making strange comparisons and examples that are either poorly processed or ill matched. Usually annoyingly inconclusive to me since only excuses of time or lack software/settings literacy or availability are given when issues are pointed out to authors.

@@anthonyrock5039 the color is more accurate the HNS. @@Darkshutters Great to know this J.D. I appreciate your comment more congratulations and continues success to you. Then you understand my comment as well regarding raw output. Currently own full 100s fuji system and had the 50s before that and eyeballing the x2d and curious about its output vs h6d100c. If only it had IBIS, a more powerful processing unit and focusing comparable to current generation Sonies', was more affordable (idem, its lenses)... It is a beauty of a camera. The onboard GPS, to Me, is a necessary feature. The leaf shutter makes a lot of difference, too. It outperforms the A7r IV by a long shot in lowlight performance and by a small, by noticeable margin - in dynamic range. Its UI is the best there is. Did I mention its body is the handsomest of all?

I just don't get why this camera is so incredibly expensive. Does it have a diamond lens mount? Does it have an engraved celebrity autograph? Was it designed by Louis Vuitton? Or is it really just that hipster? Let's be honest: it has a very very good sensor, but everything else is pre-2010, after watching this review. Not worth my 6k (euros).
