In this episode 6 of a 6-part series on fitness, exercise and performance with Andy Galpin, PhD, professor of kinesiology at California State University, Fullerton, he explains optimal nutrition, hydration and supplementation to achieve your fitness goals. We cover macronutrient guidelines, when to eat relative to training and training fasted versus fed. Dr. Galpin describes proper hydration for before and during exercise, how dehydration and/or low electrolyte concentrations impede physical and mental performance. He discusses what supplements work best for fitness and performance, how to decide which to take, if any, and when to take them. He also shares high-impact, lower-cost supplements and nutrition recommendations to benefit performance, recovery, and sleep. This episode also includes an audience Q&A. Overall, it is an in-depth but clear discussion of nutrition strategies and supplements that can help anyone improve their level of fitness physical and mental performance.

the huberman lab podcast has single handledly completely changed my outlook on my health and fitness. I stopped smoking weed and stopped drinking liquor because of his episodes on each of those. Last time I took a sip of liquor was on November 6th 2022. I've been getting 8 hours of sleep per night, work out a minimum of 5 times per week and have purchased an AG1 subscription along with purchasing the momentous huberman lab "full complete product collection" package. Im super excited to add these suppliments to my daily routine an am beyond excited to see what my health will be like 6 months from now

I just finished listening to this series via podcast and I must say, it was incredible. More importantly, I want to say thank you to both you and Andy. I know how much of a time commitment this had to be. I learned so much from this series. I’ll definitely be integrating some of what I’ve learned here! Thank you!!

THANK YOU BOTH! Not only did I listen to this series of 6 episodes, I intend to go back and listen again and take key notes. What a fantastic resource! This has also encouraged me to download Instagram , just so that I can get more information from you both…

I was hesitating whether I should write this message but here I go. I am one of those who made sure to stay hydrated throughout the day. One time I heard this should also happen before we go to bed. Well, yesterday I decided to stop drinking water at around two hours before sleeping and I only woke up once!!!!! I am amazed!!! Thank you Andy and prof. Huberman!❤

I listened to all six episodes, I will go back to all of them more than once. I have been a recreational marathon runner for 30 years. I trained old school Bowerman LSR years ago when everyone was doing 16 weeks to marathon training, it was so nice to hear all that I learned and all that worked, explained by Andy. I think of our bodies as our own ongoing scientific project, which is great fun. I also go by the thought that most are up 16 hours a day, one hour of physical fitness anything is really nothing. Andy gave such great advice and examples of practical ways to get a bit of fitness/health in each day. Thank you both for sharing all that you do !

Every interview podcast, AH shows what healthy, deeply appreciative, respectful relationships look like. Amongst the countless tools I have learned and implemented from his podcasts, that is to me his greatest contribution. Thank you both so much! Invaluable metrics. :) Thank you to all those behind the scenes too!

Unbelievable, I love that one! So much talk about some very basic things and I did not get bored. Partly probably because Andy Galpin is not a puppet and won't answer questions without at least adding some nuance and explaining the why, when, for whom etc. What a nice fresh breeze in the field of podcasts where so many podcast guests, in my opinion, seem to not deal much with nuance and just push hyped one size fits all and whatnot, which is very frustrating to say the least. Plus, Andrew is doing a fantastic job letting Andy take his time to explain things thoroughly. Love it! Thank you guys, you are awesome! Thomas

Truly, Dr. Huberman and Dr.Galpin have created a unique and very special bond that we have the privilege of being able to share in real time with them. Dr.H is such a wonderful interviewer, he always asks every question that I want to know and he is a great listener. I can't get enough of the long format and excellent presentations he has provided for free. As a life long learner and health care professional and a mom of a young professional athlete, I weekly listen to these" Master Courses"for pleasure, academic enrichment and information to share with my patients and my favorite athlete regularly . The opportunity to listen to him daily is one my favorite things to do while walking first thing in the morning. I look forward to seeing him live one day. I don't watch TV but I do watch and binge watch this channel and other like it regularly .

Dr. Galpin and of course Dr. Huberman are amazing resources to everyone. I am grateful for all the lessons that I’ve learned from this podcast. I have to say that people should definitely hydrate before going to a physical therapist for stretching. It was a bit offensive marginalizing the importance of hydrating before a physical therapy session.

If you watch it on TV or your computer, you can pause it and then dictate it into your phone. If you turn on the subtitles, you can just read from there. Easy Peezy. Hope that helps. I think my phone is going to explode from the amount of notes I’ve taken from the Huberman Lab podcast.

I always would sweat so easy, and I hated it so much and as I got older, I jokingly would say I had a high-performance cooling system. now finding out that it’s actually true. It’s so cool.😎 I used to remember at soccer practice being completely soaked, and then my teammates, having beads of sweat on therefore head and I’m sitting here wondering “what the hell”😂

After the six episodes i really feel like a student again, who was going through a semester of new things. I learned things i never thought i would get into ... never thought of going that deep ... never thought i would be interested in. But furthermore I'm really motivated to take care of my body even more than before (and already started) ... the funny thing is, that i don't have any problems on doing my workouts anymore, because i know why i'm doing them, and what's going on in my body ... so i couldn't thank you enough Dr. Andrew & Dr. Andy 🤗 ❤

As a very healthy guy and former (non-competitive) bodybuilder since HS, I have taken many supplements over 40+ years. Protein powder for the most part, a daily multi-vitamin comes in a close 2nd, then for nearly the last 10 years creatine, along with daily ginger root and extra vitamin D, and added to that turmeric, magnesium, and beet root in the last 3 years. 10 years ago I had decided that it was better to go from drinking 3 down to 2 protein shakes per day, and have since stopped creatine (the daily recommended amt) because of a borderline grade 3 kidney disease diagnosis 3 yrs ago. My protein shake is now 1 per day (pre-made bottle) maybe 3x a week, and I get the rest of my protein from foods like eggs, fish, chicken, etc. There was really no need for me to take several grams of protein supplements other than to tax my kidneys. And at first I thought the creatine was what gave me false kidney readings. But nope, after stopping I still get the same readings. I also had a doctor mention to me that taking supplements puts the kidneys to work harder. And I also read that there could be possible heavy metals in some supplements. So to get my kidney levels back down to grade 2 I am cutting down on some of these supplements while maintaining and then adding to my healthy diet. I had never eaten a great amount of veggies, at least not what was required daily, so my diet hasn't been 100% perfect. I used to juice for a while to get those in but have stopped 8 years ago because I got tired of the cleanup and mess. I have been cooking a lot of my own meals for the last 20 years with only the occasional cheat day 1-2x a month. Pizza.. yeah! Have a donut? Sure! For the last 20 years I thought that going 200g or more protein was ridiculous and can be eventually bad for the kidneys. So what I have learned was that despite lifting weights 6x a week, drinking water and having clear pee, taking protein and eating healthy, and looking in really good shape there could be some side effects with taking too much supplements. What would I recommend to others younger? Drink water. I thought I was drinking enough but apparently not. I had no effects that my kidneys were being taxed other than occasional minor hand cramps when driving while on creatine (when driving in the morning) and seeing my feet slightly swelling only in the rare time I was in places with high humidity. Don't overdo supplements. Start taking your blood labs by at least 50. Continue eating healthy as you get older. My other blood readings were normal thanks to that. Being a guy with big muscles isn't as important when you get older. You can still maintain a nice impressive muscular physique but it becomes less important to look like a muscle head. (I never really did).

Hi Dr. Huberman, thank you for another great episode with Dr. Galpin. As a side-note, you have endorsing Momentous supplements left, right and center on your shows, and also empathetically acknowledging financial affordability as a possible concern for many in your audience. I live in Canada and very upset to share that over 1/3rd of my cost of ordering from Momentous on each order (regardless to size) has been the shipping costs. On an 151$ order, for example, Momentous would like you to pay an additional 61$ for shipping to Toronto which is ridiculous to state the very obvious.

I have learned a very important lesson in life. You can't change anybody else. You can only change yourself. Change comes from inside you. It comes from the willingness to listen, understand, and then implement. Changing someone else is a futile exercise. Stop doing it
