"I can't do this. I'm a mathematician, not a calculator." THANK YOU. Being a pure math major, I am expected to do the calculations all the time when it comes to splitting checks, etc. Realistically, I stop doing purely calculations by the end of calculus III. Not that I don't enjoy or can't do calculations, but math is definitely beyond that. For the next 2 years after calc, I study theory and proofs. There's so much more beauty behind theory and analysis...(nerding out). Anyhoo, Eugenia is the best! Passion for math and baking like this are what we need hehe. Also, I am so glad Stephen is now hosting the Late Show. He's so funny & he has one of the most diverse group of guests! :) Keep up the good work!

Stephen, it's 162, not 172. But Eugenia is correct; math isn't about multiplying big numbers together. It's about finding patterns. For example, how did I notice that 172 is not the correct answer? There's a pattern in multiples of 3: the sum of the digits of any multiple of 3 is also divisible by 3, and this is not true for 172. Why is this pattern true? That is a great motivation to learn beautiful subjects like modular arithmetic. I wish math classes focused more on this than mindless calculation.

Why do you need a thousand Lairs? Once you have one, Hatcheries will do you. You're just wasting minerals and vespene, Dr. Chang. On the other hand, layering math is basically like taking that number, 2, and sticking it inside of a mech inside of a mech inside of a mech inside of a mech inside of a mech (this is a fairly complicated process). So in strictest mathematical terms, her equation of 2x3x3x3x3x3x3x3= Super Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann.

Hmm... if you take a thousand layer cake and divide it into three, you only add two more layers, not multiply it by three, no??? Then if you add two layers of strawberry cream, that's two more layers - a total of four layers added once split and served. Methinks the math is slightly off a smidge.
