why people have to name MJ every time they mention Dr J? 🤦‍♂️ take the Doctor's ABA and NBA career together and he's up there with anyone else... a powerhouse on his own, no freaking need to bring up somebody else, the Doctor was the Doctor, nobody like him before or after him

I had no idea how ignorant I was on the subject; but I got woke. hahaha, SO LMBO.

@@paula-yr7pp(even though I was right handed) I stretched my left hand so I could palm a Basketball like a grapefruit..... increased my vertical to 39 1/2"..... and could dunk a Basketball anyway I wanted. Two hands, one hand, off two feet, one foot, off the glass, bounce off the floor, alley oops... was fun jumping without the ball because you could jump higher. Couldn't shoot squat from outside 15 feet.... my game was down low or the open court, worked on ball fakes, footwork, explosiveness, and shooting with both hands. At 6 ft.... had to utilize my head and jumping ability. Again.....Julius "Dr. J" Erving was my inspiration.

How awesome it must be for Dr. J to know that he brought so much joy to so many people for so many years. The thing is he's always been a humble man and I think that's what most of us love about him more than anything else. I'm 58 years old and my 2 favorite athletes growing up were Thurman Munson and Dr. J. When he had his afro back in the 70's and in full flight towards the basket he was the coolest looking dude of all time. Although I'm a Knicks' fan, I've never been happier for an athlete than I was when Dr. J finally won his ring in 1983. I was at game 1 in Philly for those finals, which is to my recollection the only time I saw The Doctor live. Here's the lesson for everyone out there. Don't seek greatness. Put your head down, get to work and be grateful for the opportunity. Greatness never finds the person who seeks to be great, it finds the humble man. That sums up Dr. J.

That’s some nostalgia right there. Yes carrying is more common, but nobody from old times can handle the ball like Steph or Kyrie.
@thespadestable
@thespadestable Жыл бұрын
@@hanaf1231 - There were a notable number of good handlers in the NBA back in the days. The difference is a lot of the stuff players have gotten away with over the past 25 years got called back in the day. Rules have been relaxed in the name of entertainment, because as for those who were old enough to witness games from back in the 70's and even early to mid-80's, there were a lot more stoppages of play due to traveling/palming/carrying calls. Even the current day European leagues have gone to relaxed officiating as a means of preparing potential NBA or U.S. lower tier pro team bound players for that style of competition.
@hanaf1231
@hanaf1231 Жыл бұрын
@@thespadestable I don’t disagree with you overall, but I still don’t think the old NBA players could keep up. I mean those guys literally had other jobs and mostly grew up playing on local courts. Guys today live in the gym, travel all over to play the best competition, have specialized trainers as early as Middle School, and are just so much better. Of course if you took the best guys from the 60s and let them develop in the modern world, I think they’d still be great, but watching their highlights it’s not just rule changes that makes the difference. They can’t shoot, dribble or do anything on the level of the modern guys. This goes for just about any sport. IMO since it’s obviously a “just for laughs” discussion since it’s impossible to prove.
@thespadestable
@thespadestable Жыл бұрын
@@hanaf1231 - I guess you don't realize there were no 3 point line back in the 60's, so players did not practice shooting 22 feet from the rim, because no matter what you shot it was only 2 points. Also, based on video analysis it's been determined players like Pete Maravich, Jerry West, Nate Archibald, John Havlicek alone would have ended their careers with much higher career points had there been a 3 point line, because they were already scoring from at or near 22 foot distances, and scoring. At the end of the day, you take away the relaxed rules that favor offensive players (i.e. increase scoring) you would see a much different game that's being played now. Besides the relaxed rules when it comes to traveling and carrying, over the past few years, players have gotten away with basically stiff arming their way past defender. A move what was totally illegal just 10 years ago. If anything, the relaxed rules shows that the Black players lacked the fundamentals of basketball, so the league had to allow "streetball" antics to allow them to perform as professional basketball players.
@hanaf1231
@hanaf1231 Жыл бұрын
@@thespadestable I’m old enough to have grown up watching the NBA with no three point line, at least until Middle School years. Average free throw percentage is higher now than it was in the 60s - barely higher, but higher. Your weird statement about black people makes your perspective clear dude. Michael Jordan and Lebron James would have dominated in any era.

Most years couldn't get past Celtics. Glad they got one ring. Remember most of those names on Sunday CBS. Julius Erving ushered in modern basketball with his dunks. Mo Cheeks walk and gait undeniable. Gerald Henderson I'm picturing black shoes back in the day. Seemed like Celtics wore those. Good old days. God bless all

@@beautiful80sladies22 O,most definitely!As a spectator you would be sweating as much as the players,if not more,lol!1 nite they were interviewing McHale n when he was told the temperature was over 100°inside he said "Well,I don't think they're gonna call off the game just bcuz of That".He n everyone around him just couldn't stop laughing!But yeah,it was stifling in there especially in June n it got so loud at times,but overall those Celtic teams were in incredible shape n never lost due to lack of conditioning.The old "Gahden"..86,40-1at home that year lost the 1 to Portland. Could've gone undefeated at home.O well,can't win em all! Ty for yer post!
