He pretty much summed it up. If he was to fall for someone who was 13 he would seek help and thats exactly what Mary should have done. There are lots of grown ups with teenage brains!

I think he summed up a few things with his comments. Like, she had no history of screwing around with young boys before him. And that she "was ripped away from him" when he was a young kid. And when he said she was his best friend. Sure, as a 30something woman, it was wrong for her to have a relationship with her 12 year old student. And she suffered the consequences for it and went to prison for years. But when she got out, and he was grown adult, HE fought for the right to be with her. And he married her stayed with her pretty much for the rest of her life.. That in itself also says alot, too. You can see the sadness on his face, and hear the grief in his voice when talking about her. Its plain to see that he loved her, and as he said..she was his best friend. Also, as he said, its very easy for others pass judgement on her, and on their relationship. They don't know her, and they don't know him. What happened in the past was wrong, but at some point after she had served her time for it, it was a lawfully consensual relationship and their feelings for each other were valid and true. Take what u will from that observation, im just trying to point out that its not a black and white issue, and the situation is too nuanced and has too many variables and plot twists to pass any kind of accurate judgement on it.

It is not abnormal to be sexually attracted to someone above the age of puberty. Of course, in our society, people don't let their minds go there because of all the reasons why such a relationship is not likely to work out well. However functioning adults, especially the married ones, are not supposed to give in to every sexual attraction that crosses their minds.

@@mattjack3983 like Vili Pointed out Mary had no history of doing anything inappropriate with miniors pre meeting Vili or after she taught him in 2nd grade in 1991 and even when she taught him again in 1996 during the whole fall of 1995 Spring of 1996 school year there was Nothing inappropriate or sexual being done. They didn't start dating until the summer of 1996 when Vil was no longer her student and he had graduated from primary school. Since primary school or Elementary school in Seattle Washington region ends at 6th grade. These kinds of relationships where older people and younger people getting together was a pretty common practice in most of world history when people died during. pervious generations of human history because of diseases and childbirth so people had to get married or get together earlier and become adults earlier. This was common up untill the 1950s and 60s you had Elvis Pressly who dated and later married Priscilla Presley when he was 24 she was aged 14 years old

I know my comment won’t be popular. I’m sorry she died- it’s clearly devastated her husband & children. But about a year before she got sick I saw an interview on 60 Minutes Australia, & many times in the interview you could tell theirs was a strained marriage at best. Mary still adored him, but Vili was struggling- he said so in not so many words. She had an overbearing personality, & had to have the last word. Whereas Vili is such a mild mannered, sweet, thoughtful man, who avoids conflict at all costs. In the interview I saw, he essentially said he was still in the marriage for his daughters, who he said deserved to live in an intact family. Because Mary got pregnant when he was 13, & he stepped up to take responsibility of raising his daughters, he never had a youth or a young man’s life or experiences. It was not a good marriage, very one sided. Their daughters are beautiful, inside & out. I feel awful for them. I hope Vili finds the woman of his dreams & can enjoy an age appropriate partner or wife, which is by choice rather than doing the right thing. The whole story up to the end is a tragedy. RIP Mary.

I wonder what happened to Mary Kay in her youth that made this possible in her mind. She seemed childlike and he says there was no perversion in the relationship in his mind. They were probably emotional equals and I just think she must have had some trauma in her past that stopped her emotional growth at a young age. I pray Vili and his family have peace and understanding about her death and life. May his wife now rest in peace.
@rosyorose1061
@rosyorose1061 3 жыл бұрын
Spot on regarding the emotional equality! She looked and acted like a very young girl...Its so complicated and not even just about chronological/emotional ages. It doesn't excuse Mary Kay for her actions, because she had the added experience of 'life experience' but I think she viewed life through the rose coloured glasses of a teenager while using her 'adult' experience and knowledge to manipulate. In an ideal world, his Parents would have stopped it before it really got started....Its a huge tragedy, the fallout of which will affect the lives of Vili and their Daughters for the rest of their lives....I pray they come through it in the end...

Well..when that is with another in their teenage years...it is understandable. When it is with an adult, it is RAPE. An adult manipulates & primes their target just like Mary Kay. I understand that he doesn't want to speak badly of her because his emotions are involved but he knows what she did was wrong and he wouldn't want it for his daughters. He said so in a previous interview before they separated. He seems to be vacillating. This is what this wrong does, It often causes conflicting emotions. 20 years would not have been such a big deal had they BOTH been adults when this began. Let's not forget the destruction and shame brought down on her husband and children by this scandal. As he mentioned, the question was in his mind of whether he had to be worried about her liking children. Almost the same as if someone ends up with someone else's spouse through adultery. That person likely wonders if the adulterer would commit the same against them with someone else. "Falling in love" and emotions do not trump morality. The end does not justify the means.

I think what's wrong here is not the age gap itself, it's the timing of when the relationship commenced (a, he was 12 and b, she was in her 30s, not to mention a previously respected elementary school teacher, mother and wife). If they had met when he was older (older than 18 to be legal) I think this would have been eventually accepted in our society and this is because he would be of the mental developmental capacity to consent. I agree with some prior comments I've read that she needed medical help/intervention/treatment at the time she noticed 'feelings', especially being a teacher and mother herself. She doesn't seem to understand why what she did was wrong. I do believe she did love him but I believe she should absolutely NOT have acted on it. She has messed up more than just her own life (his and their daughters live too, and her ex husband and their children) and it's just very sad overall. It's also not fair to ask him whether he regrets it because no parent wants to regret their children. Poor guy, I hope he and his daughters can heal together, I believe he is a good guy.

Adults that are attracted sexually to prepubescent children are pedophiles. This was not love. It had nothing to do with love. Mary Kay liked to romanticize it so that people would accept it and she could keep doing it. She was a 35 year old woman that was turned on by a little boy's penis. Sick! This is was she was doing when she should have been home taking are of her 4 little children. She chose to pleasure herself and get what she wanted and did not have any remorse ever. He's not going to disparage her now that she is dead because he's a good person and he's protecting his daughters. Very true. When I was younger maybe 15 years old I was very rebellious and dated two older guys. Because they were older in their late 20’s and maybe 30, they had cars and their own places and I was obsessed with that. Fast forward to now, I’m 35 and for the longest I never looked at them as pedophiles until I had nieces and around them turning 15 I looked at them and their bodies and realized they are babies and I was also. I asked myself would I trust them around my nieces and the answer was NO and that’s when I came to the conclusion they were pedophiles and preyed on me because I was a young rebellious teenager. I also found out one of them went to prison for 10 years for being caught having sex with a minor. It’s so sad these types of people are out. And as a victim you don’t look at yourself as a victim because you make all types of excuses and most of the time the person has groomed you to believe that you’re the only under age person they’ve dated and that you’re out of the norm some kind of way like you’re mature for your age etc. That was my case... I was always told by older men I’m very mature ... but as an adult when I look back at pictures of me when I was younger I looked like a 15 year old little girl and I was very naive. The more searching he does he will figure it out and hopefully find the strength to admit what happened to him so that he can protect other kids.

When I was in high school many of the male teachers dated female students and some got married as soon as they graduated. In today's times they would have all been charged and have gone to jail/prison. But, back then it wasn't looked at that way. Their parents knew and were fine with it. It wasn't considered a big deal. Its weird how times change.

She was very much in control of him. She groomed him and I believe he confused falling in love with Stockholm syndrome. But then she was all he knew, so he became dependent on her in a way. Then during her last days she was dependent on him. I hope he is doing well and her other 4 kids made it out of this tragic situation.

At 12/years old, he was a child. Just a boy who was even close to being a man. I can’t grasp this but he seems to have turned out well. They have two beautiful daughters so some good came of it. I wish him peace for the rest of his life. .

Being attracted to a minor is not a preference first of all. I feel very sorry for him because he was 12 years old when this happened to him. That is just a kid! I understand he loved her she loved him but it was still wrong. But I do feel for him because taken advantage of and it's not his fault.

This is disturbing how they are trying to downplay the fact that she was sexually inappropriate with a 12 year old. Of course he can’t respond properly about it because he was groomed by her starting with when he was just 12 years old. He was a victim and it carried on into his adulthood. This is every parents worse nightmare.

Absolutely! What is more disturbing are the twisted effers on this commentary about a pedophile...Let's romanticize her behavior and normalize it because she didn't cause any psychological damage that they can see. Sounds like they need therapy themselves..since, their viewpoints are that RAPE is acceptable when you marry your victim. Sick sick people.

@@doingme8384 It was nice to share a similar mind-set with someone on here. It is disturbing to read the comments. RIP to a pedophile because she married her victim and he didn't turn to drugs or alcohol. Wonder why the world is so messed up. In backward countries, we know that children are molested & raped and find that horrible. But this victim was manipulated into marrying his Perpetrator...so, it was true love. Mary Kay Letourneau was a Narcissist. A selfish predator who kept her captive by marrying him. Well, I have to calm down...lol...so, you have a Blessed DAY.

seriouslyjoking2 exactly. It’s breathtaking to see someone else be Sane on this thread. I think the most disturbing comment came from a lady named holly on here. She said he was mature for his age and that they didn’t just bang, that he loved here. Some sickos on here! I called her out and she said it was a matter of opinion and that’s it. 🤮

@@doingme8384 Some of these commentors are either young (having never experienced anything in their short lives) or they need therapy themselves since their opinion neglects the crime she committed.

Those journals are so important for him. I will read his book one day. You can see how he has so many thoughts to process, but their whole marriage she would speak for him, to help, because shes a teacher and loves him, but that didnt give him room to learn to speak for himself. I hope he can spend some time growing and healing from his loss and everything that came with it, and still live a happy life moving forward ❤

He’s a grown man. He’s not a kid anymore. He had every chance to walk away from her, but he didn’t. He obviously really loved her. I don’t condone them having intercourse when he was a minor, but maybe they would’ve ended up together down the road anyway. Yes, they should’ve waited until he was an adult. I can’t say that I understand it. I do feel horrible for him though. He’s obviously grieving because he loved her. Their children have lost their mother. It’s terribly sad.

It's not as simple as that. At 12 years old a person's brain is very underdeveloped. A child may have a crush on his teacher, that's fairly common. As the adult, 34 year old MOTHER of 4 she was way ahead of him in brain development and life experience but had a sexual relationship with him. Imagine as a 12 year old making such a decision, acting on your desires is very easy when you have a 34 year old who's willing to do it. Probably his first love, first relationship, first person who cared about him like that. He was damaged psychologically, how would he walk away from something that's he attached himself to since 12? It's possible but very hard. The teen years are crucial parts of life. They shape you a lot and many things stay with you well into adulthood. He had no chance.

Searcher Ofsakina, once you’re an adult, you have the choice-especially since he went years being separated from her while in prison-without her influence. The bottom line is that he loved her.
