Season 2 Episode 11 "Graveyard Shift"
Everyone feels the effects of working the graveyard shift. As the psych resident on call, Dr. Reese is forced to make multiple death notifications to patients' families. Much to Tate's dismay, April gets pulled into working an extra shift. Also, Sharon calls Dr. Rhodes to the hospital to tend to a panda bear that needs surgery and Dr. Halstead is shadowed by a resident, only to find out that he has been intoxicated while on shift. Connor is called in to operate on a panda.

Since all the pandas belongs to China and just lend to other countries, normally if a panda is in serious health condition, a medic team that specialized in panda will departure from China for rescue with all necessary equipment and medicine.

Not to mention that getting pandas to reproduce is not the easiest thing in the world. I've read of several cases where female pandas pretended to be pregnant to get extra food. Pandas are endangered. The world needs more pandas and less humans.

I totally understand why Dr Choi decided to volunteer at the zoo. Humans can be absolutely horrible creatures, animals though can heal just about any wound of the heart and the only times they hurt you are when they die or a human mistreats them into doing something horrible like attacking your pet.

I don´t watch this show but I loved how the character of Goodwin handled/explained the situation (beautifully - talking with Connor, how this would benefit the hospital, the endangered species of pandas) but the way she said it. She was calmed, assertive...brilliant. To me that was perfection in acting. Much more so that other clips I´ve seen with dramatic situations.

Actually in very specific cases, specialists can perform procedures at the request of a vet. In this case there was a vet present so this was legal.

No it is not. You would need to have Fellowship as a veterinary surgeon. Not to mention all the hygiene issues you would have in the hospital. You'd have to quarantine the whole wing and throw away all the equipment. Plus the panda's weight would probably break some of the equipment and the face masks and other equipment wouldn't fit. I mean cutting through a panda's chest is not exactly easy either.

I’m not a doctor but I’m a med.tech. I wouldn’t even dare to do phlebotomy on my dogs even a vet taught me how once. I wasn’t trained for animal care. I’m trained to do human BLS but I had a hard time locating pulse on a healthy dog & cat. This is so unrealistical. A vet can do a surgery while a human cardio surgeon can supervise.

Nicole Jeon actually a general vet wouldn't even be able to. You would need one that specializes in exotic animals. Also if it's a human based technique you would have the cardiac surgeon who specializes in the proceedure whilst the exotic vet supervises

Nicole Jeon never said it did. I was just correcting you. Also if it is approved by the head of the hospital and properly supervised realistically the proceedure is within the scope of practice. A domestic vet would also not be proferming within their scope of practice as their not trained to care for exotic species

Christina Hantzinikolas So, if the director in my hospital told us to be a team to operate on an animal which an anatomy we didn’t study nor lab results we couldn’t rechecked. It’s ok? Technically, we analyzed blood from dogs & cats but it always a challenge to us because we don’t know anything about normal results nor how to read & analyze the blood works or any blood fluids. We don’t know how to proceed. Pandas are endangered species & closely monitored & authorities would just let a human doctor to give medications without dosage supervision from the vet. They plan without further tests & charts & proceeded as is. Well, this is fiction alright.

The most unrealistic thing about this show is that there is no way that a doctor that has a parrot pet, would then have time to volunteer anywhere! 😅 I have a parrot and I am not a doctor, but still work pretty long hours and barely have time left for myself!

Chibi Tatsu they started with a vet but the problem ended up being out of the scope of the Vets knowledge/experience. So instead of having a vet chance a procedure they are not trained in or have any experience with they used a human doctor who knows the procedures very well and is well trained and experienced in them, under the supervision of a vet. It’s the same as if you needed brain surgery, you would have a specifically trained brain surgeon to do it, but with animals there often isn’t a specifically trained vet for very complex issues because often more complex issues in animals aren’t actually treated at all, either symptoms are managed or the animal is put down.

EXACTLY. you'd never let a doctor near a panda they only know how to treat humans. The human procedures and treatments will never be the same. Stop shitting on vets they deserve repsect for what they do. A doctor can't operate on animals LEGALLY, and a vet can't operate on a human.

@@sarahb4356 there actually are specialized veterinarians. They just didn't call one in, there's quite a few heart specialist all over the world they're needed for a reason.

I actually work with a cardiac specialist veterinarian. We don't do procedures like this because we are a small practice but there are large referral hospitals that do these procedures.

Pretty much all of the medical cases from medical shows like GA and Chicago Med are based off of real life and what I mean by pretty much I mean 99/100 times the story is based off of something that happened in the real world.

Sofia. There are NO pandas at Chicago zoo. Only four zoos in the US have Pandas.
