on developing thicker skin -- i used to be afraid of criticism too, but i kind of learned to uncouple myself from my work. idk if this thought process would work for other ppl but, one day i just kind of realized that my value as an artist isn't entirely reliant in the stuff i've made but also in the stuff i'm going to do in the future. that it's my *skill*, what i could do and what i could make and not simply me and nothing else, that determines what kind of artist i could be. and since it was about my skill, it (and therefore i) could be honed. so when my artwork is being criticized, i've learned to process it as a helpful way to find where else i could bring my art to, which direction i could take with it. i'm sorry if it doesn't make complete sense. a lot of it really is just a new emotional understanding of the process and my place in it and as part of it even if it's all just the same knowledge. but something important i think is that it's a bad idea to look for really harsh criticism when you're in a bad headspace for it, if you are not ready to uncouple from your artwork yet or if you just want to be put down or feel bad and sorry for yourself. it would be so easy to use it as some kind of emotional self-harm. imo the best headspace is when you are already feeling like you could do much better and is seeking a way to grow. to clarify this is how it works for me. i hope it could help somebody but we are all very different and have different ways of going about it.

Thx for the podcast I really love it! For me it’s like an source for inspiration it’s like what Marshall talks about with the movies he has watched like ten times and still gets new things from it i, have listened to every episode of the podcast about fifteen time each and I still laugh and learn new things EVERY time . When I don’t feel like drawing I just turn on the podcast and a minute later I’m either researching or drawing like crazy. So what I wanted to say was KEEP DOING IT. It’s amazing. Thanks

Hey this is a comment for Stan, I just wanted to say it was really great to hear about your early school experience of not speaking the language, because I was in a similar situation in my schooling, being from an anglophone family and doing the first 5 years in french immersion, then failing out of french and then having to learn to read and write in english at 8. Pictures were the only thing I could actually do successfully, so I chose my path as an artist when I was 10 because of a complete lack of success in literally anything else. I'm a professional painter and illustrator now, absolutely crushing the game. Also thanks for making all of these videos, I listen to them often while I work! lots of great info and advice in here.

This was a terribly helpful conversation - especially the organization/time management portion. I have to write stuff down, going digital doesn't work for me. I get a ton of inspiration in the wee morning hours and end up using a small spiral to take it down (not always easy to translate in the morning LOL). I make many schedules but can't seem to keep them after the first day. Trying to get better at my organizational skills but still a long way to go. Hope you revisit these topics again. I LOVE learning but having to discipline myself to practice what I"m learning, so I can make it my own - getting better at that though, too. You guys are a great pair - really enjoy and benefit from listening to each episode!

I want to become a concept artist really badly but have just noticed this 2 years ago with 26. I am afraid of not getting anywhere with my art, not improving and be stuck to my boring everyday job... but thinking about just quitting makes me really sick. When I am at work, I always imagine being part of e.g. a concept art team in gaming or doing anime backgrounds in my most beloved country on this planet and just smile or hate not being able to do it NOW. I am thinking about this all the time and even I often have bad art days, I am very stubborn and ambitious when I have set a goal. I hope I will get into the industry by 30 somehow (I am from Germany and here 2D game artists do not reallyhave many opportunities...) I only have one person who really believes in me and encourages me to achieve my dream - my husband, and I think that is worth the world.

I've watched all the "productivity tips & trickszxs" videos on youtube since i was on the 8th grade but everything in this podcast can be applied to any scenario i believe. I'll be graduating high school in a few months but have been struggling and i hope i can apply everything you said in these videos. I think just another thing that also makes a good student is to take care of themselves just enough to not be a robot but also not to get too indulged as i think burn out is quite common to students who want to achieve a lot : ) great episode!

Hey Stan and Marshall, so excited for the new podcasts because I need all the tips I can get about being a better student. I'm a woman diagnosed with severe ADHD, so it's not a boy thing. Lots of women have it and it's also not something you grow out of in adulthood. We just find coping mechanisms and how to mask our symptoms. It is an actual learning disability that overlaps with Autism spectrum disorder a lot. Honestly, when Stan said he had ADHD I said I knew it. It was so inspiring to hear a successful artist who has been entirely self-motivated say that! Thank you Stan you give me hope that I can get as good as you if I don't give up.

Love these podcasts... Thank you both for your time and insight. I remember being so mad that my 6th-grade Spanish teacher didn't speak Spanish. She gave us worksheets and long boring videos to watch, while proudly exclaiming she had no idea what she was doing. She majored in Humanities and was a great Social Studies teacher. I proceeded to sabotage my 4.0 GPA by purposely 100% failing her Spanish class while getting A's in everything else - and shared my rebellious plan with my fellow students. So, long story short, does holding teachers accountable make you a good student or a bad student? I'd be curious if Marshall or Stan have any thoughts on that.

I'm finding Stan more and more relatable with each podcast. My dad ALSO moved out a year before my whole family (UK tho, not US), and I also couldn't speak English at all. Everything I was taught at school didn't mean jack, but I was only 10 when I came here so there's that. I was thrown into class just like Stan says, and I had a teacher take me away (Polish speaker) for some lessons. I've learned a ton from this, and 3 years later I was fluent, and top of my class in secondary school. I lost all my interest in academics by the time I was 16 though.

As a man who has conducted Child care for asperger's and autistic children from an early age. I concur greatly with the disability statement. As an internet socialite of the funny animal variety (taking a joke from Stan Lee about that genre) I also agree that even adults have mental issues in all walks of life that may be witnessed. The internet isn't very good at being anything but neutral. An absolute learning I'd say. It has both styles of your good and bad learning simultaneously but the instantaneous nature if wielded correctly is a great sword. Many people on the internet exist as pseudonyms with entire lives hidden from view and it assists them from abusive pasts. The only danger I believe a good student has is the comfort of the mask itself to detain walking from one room to the next. My own experience of therapy assisted me with "allowing" the self. Automatic Drawing still continues to be an excellent tool for this as well. Almost zen if I were to equate it as a different name. Therein is the absolute edifice of imposter syndrome taken by the internet to its furthest extent. Because of this we must be very direct in our hearts. Even self consciousness can be injurious. Marshall's singing is lovely. Rhyming isnt needed but his efforts are wonderful all the same. :D I look forward to your opinions on composition! It is clear for Mr Vandruff that it extends far beyond the scope of what dimensions we are capturing inside a canvas. Keep up the wonderful work you two.

I think the main reason of lack of motivation is a lack of art philosophy, or your own philosophy of art: What is art? What is art for you? What is its purpose? etc. Purpose is the driving force of motivation. Without purpose there is no meaning. Maybe you should make an episode on that.

i think one part of being a good student is to actually know where you want to go to and what you need to learn to do so. why enter a lifedrawing anatomy course of proko :3 and learn human anatomy for years when your heart beats for more abstact cartoony stuff and thats what you want to do at the end where such things doesnt hurt to know but are not required while you have other things to focus on to reach your goal.
