@Pigeonomoutr It's still possible to get him to accept being king even if you don't harden him. It's a bit more difficult if you don't, however, because an unhardened Alistair is reluctant to be king; that just means you have to be a bit more persuasive. He also becomes a slightly different king depending. An unhardened Alistair has "the touch of the common man," while a hardened Alistair studies formal law and administration like Anora. He becomes a good, competent king either way though.

Elizabeth also was a loyal friend and stood by the people who had stood by her. She even felt an incredible amount of fear,guilt and anxiety about ordering the death of Mary Queen of Scots, even though Mary had been plotting against her for years.

Later on, when you meet Alistair in camp, he'll say that he's learned his lesson. Agree with him, and Alistair will change. At that point, he will be much more likely to agree to take the thronE

The interaction between Loghain and Anora breaks my heart here. Granted, both of them are ruthless and all that, but this is just horrible. Seeing Loghain comfort his daughter like this and accepting this so calmly sure made me respect him. And his voice gives me shivers. His Redeemer ending is IMO the most touching ending of DAO.

@jseth03 Personally I think Alistair is better because you have him longer and so you can spec him exactly how you want him. Loghain is a champion and has all the champion talents and sword & shield.

You need to 'harden' him first. After he meets Goldanna you can use the less softy choices and though he'll be less bubbly, he'll be willing to be king, I suppose.

Ahh so Alistair's companion quest can toughen him up just as Leliana's can toughen her up. A slightly firmer Alistair is easier to bear.

I usually get the request around Lothering or Redcliffe, but I talk to the other characters A LOT. His quest is to go find Goldanna and meet her... I won't give aw2ay spoilers, though

@Suprnovo3 true, but there isn't any real down side of recruiting all the characters, just leave the ones back when u dont want to use them , more characters means more quests as they offer interesting quests once u talk to them and gain influence

This happens at Landsmeet, so before the end dragon. Landsmeet occurs after you've gathered up the various armies.

Even Eamon seemed happy enough to let her go if she swore loyalty to Alistair. There's no indication otherwise because she wouldn't have been a dethroned monarch, she would have been a dowager queen-consort. For all that she ruled she held the throne by right of Cailin, primogeniture having been confirmed as the traditional mode of inheritance in Ferelden

If you're NOT a human noble, you have to "harden" him first and then pick the right dialogue option after Loghain's defeat in the Landsmeet (the dialogue option is something like "no one tells the king of Ferelden what to do" or something like that). Otherwise, he'll break up with you because Ferelden wouldn't accept a non-human lover for Alistair. So let me HEAVILY recommend you play a Human Noble if you want to romance an "unhardened" Alistair.

Well for one thing, there's very little evidence that Catherine had Peter murdered and she made every effort to distance herself from that act but Elizabeth was not educated with her younger brother. @Aznzzboi No, it's all instances, kind of like Fable 2, lots of side quests, doing the main plot is only about 30% of the game, so there is still alot of side quests.

Except that, no matter what Loghain says in a moment of bitterness, if you keep your end of the bargain she doesn't betray you once. Not ONCE. Again, if YOU would roll over for someone intent on destroying you (Again, dethroned monarchs' best hope is life in prison, usually it's death) and or murdering your father, good for you. I LOVE that she has her own agenda and won't fall at the Warden's feet. It's brilliant, strong and courageous.

I've got some other good examples of dowager Queen-consorts. Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen, wife of William IV of England who was succeeded by his niece, Victoria. Mary Tudor, Queen of France, sister to Henry VIII and aunt to two queens regnant. Joan of Navarre, widow of two royal men - John V of Brittany (an independent state until 1532) and Henry IV of England. Mary I, Queen regnant of Scotland and dowger Queen-consort of France, widowed at age 16. No towers, no executions

@XcheshireXXcat according to the Dragon age wiki Alistair has to be hardened AND you have to let him fight Loghain as your champion in order for that to happen (letting him kill Loghain after you fight him isn't enough I guess)... and sadly nobody who went through those conditions has posted a video, because when I saw that happen I thought it was awesome :)

In this video he is hardened, but as a noble you can marry him even if he is not. You actually don't even need to be romancing him to marry him as a noble. He's rather confused if you do propose to rule alongside him and you aren't in a relationship with him. You can't let Alistair fight Loghain - he will just kill him and take the crown. It has to be you or someone else in your party.

Actually what they talk about is her trying as hard as she can to help the elves but that a food riot (Same thing happens to the Warden in Awakening and nobody is bashing them) broke out and, like the Warden in Awakening, had to be subdued. Alistair's epilogue just says he's popular, nothing else. Whereas Anora builds a university, opens trade and alliances etc. However, IMHO the best solution is to have them rule together, they're an awesome team.

Am I the only person who managed to get Alistair to accept the throne right away, without that "wait, who's decided that?" line? I don't know what I did on my play through, but I was able to have it happen that Alistair said something along the lines of "if that's the will of the people then I accept" after Eamon says he'll be taking the throne, and the whole option to talk to him and Anora and choose didn't even exist... and I haven't been able to find any vids where that happens

I'd try to deflect everything with humor and seem ok. People mourn differently. Anora is an amazingly strong woman and competent queen. You don't have to like her, but do respect her

If you choose Anora as Queen, Alistair likes you less if you let him stay, or he'll leave and have Loghain take his place if you do that and let Loghain live.

DX when I heard this in game I was like, "Why is Alistair acting like this? It's so out of character for him!" and then I realized, "Oh right... it's the Duncan thing." Poor Alistair has so much heartbreak.

Tammy, this is NOT the same thing. By David Gaider's word, Anora was ruling Queen of Ferelden after Cailan died. (She ruled even when he was alive) By overthrowing her (In game dialogue even calls it that) her rule is challenged. By making a bid for the throne, whoever loses in the end is a danger to the kingdom's stability. (I.E. Mary Queen Of Scots who WAS overthrown an executed) Even non ruling royalty suffered that fate....Margaret Pole, Countess of Salisbury and her family for one.

One additional thought and then I'll stop for now. It was hinted at in Return to Ostagar and then confirmed by the developers that Loghain's true motive wasn't fear of Orlais but the fact that Cailin was leaving Anora due to her apparent inability to conceive (here's the sexism for you - neither Cailin or Eamon thought that Cailin could be at fault). By getting rid of Cailin and standing as regent he was securing Anora's position. What he did was for her and she still let him die.

It's not necessary to harden Alistair in order to become his queen. As long as you have high Coercion and a reasonable amount of cunning, chosing that option at this point in the landsmeet will still get you engaged and he'll still be goofy and adorable. (You still have to be a noble human of course).

With a high enough approval rating, Alistair will reveal that he has a sister. Go to Denerim to meet heR Goldana will act rude and heartless while demanding money, which will thoroughly dishearten Alistair. At this point, if you want to toughen him up, select the, "Everyone is out for themselves" option.

@mainkain I asked that same thing XD. I think it's the whole Duncan thing. He has issues with Loghain because he blames him for Duncan's death. It's kind of like how when I made my female human noble character, she was merciful to everyone but Howe, who I thoroughly enjoyed killing.

They weren't just "disliking" or "criticizing" her, they outright bashed her and enjoyed seeing her suffer. Big difference. I said "Vile character hate" not that they have vile characters btw. Not liking Anora is fine, I wouldn't want to hang out and be friends with her either, I just have immense respect for her and admire her competence, drive and intelligence. I also see in what a difficult situation she finds herself in. Seeing BOTH sides, ya know?

ETA: I know that Anora only became "officially" recognized as queen after Cailan died, even if she did all the work before then as well. I'm aware of the title difference as well. But to explain further: The War Of The Roses is actually the best example of the "You win or die" philosophy. As is Henry VII and VIII executing rivals and pretenders (Esp. Yorkists, even innocents) left and right. Philipp II. would have executed Elizabeth I. as well, had the Armada been successful.

Oh god... For Alistair's sake, maybe I should have kicked his ass about Goldanna instead of having him stammer about and look like a dork while everyone decides to make him king. He was also pretty pissed off about it later...

One issue here seems to be that you're confusing Queen-consort with Queen-regnant. Queen-consort is the position held by the wife of a King-regnant. Queen-regnant is Queen in her own right, usually by inheritance. Off the top of my head I know two good examples of respected dowager Queen-consorts. Margaret of France (Edward I) and Katherine Parr (Henry VIII). One who continued to play "the Game of Thrones" was Elizabeth Woodville. She died well-respected in retirement at Bermondsey Abbey (cont)

Look at Elizabeth I. executing Mary Queen Of Scots. Anora is an excellent queen and ruler who does her duty. And Alistair makes NO such promise to her. In fact, if she lets him life, a revolt in HIS name has to be squashed a year later.

Yes you have to be a human noble to be Queen. No other races/origins can be Queen. However - if you choose to not make him king, you both can wander off happily, no matter what your origin.

Oh except Elzabeth I. was raised like a Prince Of Wales, along WITH the Prince of Wales, one of the few things Henry VIII did right. Do not compare her with an innocent lad like Alistair, seriously. (Anora is actually A LOT like Elizabeth, including her love for her Dad DESPITE everything) And both Elizabeth and Catherine were willing, able, RUTHLESS and ambitious. (Catherine was especially ruthless, what with overthrowing her husband and having him murdered too?)

Rulers without being specifically trained for the crown who have proven to be good rulers have been Elizabeth I, Catherine the Great of Russian and (arguably) Henry VII who spent most of his childhood on the run as the Lancastrian heir to the throne. Conversely, rulers who were raised for kingship have failed spectacularly eg Edward II and Richard II

@garakga I've read both the books and while I can see Loghain's position to an extent, he's taken his hatred of Orlais too far. I really loved Loghain and Rowan in the books. I thought Maric was a douche. The battle at Ostagar is a very grey decision. Ultimately, Cailan is responsible for his own death, but Loghain allowing Howe to advise him was just stupid. That said, in some play throughs I let him live.

No - he leaves her in the tower. My Cousland might talk to a little elf assassin named Zevran after the game ends and have her have an "accident". About the armor - I think I accidentally deleted your comment instead of replied. I have Legion and the Dragon Bone set as well.

when you have resceud Anora from her father and when you go and talk too her she will ask you if she can have your vote in becomming the queen, just don't make that deal with her and she will side with her father at the landsmeet and betray you that will give allistair a shove into the right direction, also make sure that when you meet his sister you tell him that she is a complete bitch, all that will make him harder.

maybe your coercion isn't high enough. Warriors generally don't put a lot of points in cunning. Cunning is the modifying stat for coercion. and I think you need at least 16 or 20 points in cunning to max out coercion.

@rosellagirl3451 Well i had Alistair hardned, but I didn't have him fight as my champion, I fought Loghain myself. I did allow Alistair to kill Loghain afterwards though. I liked that way better too, yay for assertive Alistair! :D

It was not confirmed that Loghain knew about this, only that these were Cailan's plans. Gaider in fact confirmed that Loghain knew nothing of Cailan's betrayal towards his wife until RTO. SHE let him die? If you tell her he must die she doesn't support you and when the death sentence is spoken she objects and pleads for mercy. So STFU about her "letting him die". She never did. She tells you that much even beforehand.

I killed Loghain the first time around. Now I always spare him just for a twist.

Just like...YOUR WARDEN has to subdue a food riot in Amaranthine in Awakening. (Does that mean your Warden had no heart either? Esp. since if you appease the rioters, the food shortage will get worse. Only clear authority prevents a bloodbath and more strife in the long run in Awakening) Anora is very well loved by her people, the cheers she receives upon her coronation are actually louder (And not just by a tad) than those for Alistair. But again, the best solution: Team them up, best outcome.

@FlyFreeSkyline She likes to make it seem like she's only wanting to do whats best for her country yada yada but she really is just a ruthless brat with a superiority complex, she's afraid of losing the throne to such a point that she kills Alistair if you let her win even if he promises he won't try to take her rule. Then even when she's lost fair and square she refuses to let it go. Really can't stick her.

@1oktay1 you can't let Alistair duel Loghain and you then choose the persuade option to rule at Anora's side.

Alistair CAN kill Loghain but you can too. Nevertheless, if you're of a Human Noble origin and are male, you can marry Anora and let Alistair kill Loghain. Alternatively, if you've hardened Alistair in his personal quest, you can spare Loghain and suggest to Alistair that he become king.
