Shin Budokai perfected Budokais core game design. I dropped off the DB game hype train when Tenkaichi started, as Tenkaichi is a DB Sim before it is a fighting game but getting Shin Budokai and then seeing Infinite World implement some of Shin's innovations just made it ultra clear how refined Dimps could get Budokai if they stuck with the system and we actually got the only dreamed of Budokai 4.

I loved these back in the day. I remember opening the umd slot and giving the game to a friend so we can play vs with one copy of the game.

Shin budokai is a good game for a psp game but its very over looked and hated on due to the expected hype of Budokai 1,2 and 3 i feel like it was a good game for its time.

The full Budokai series (base, Tenkaichi, infinite world and Shin) is the greatest fighting series ever.

Shin Budokai is extremely underrated and overlooked. Not only it was on the psp but the gameplay was overhauled by a lot. Changes has to be made but it is a fun game to play and the story, to me, is entertaining and expand from the movie. I still have this game but haven't gotten to play the sequel. I even started playing not to long ago on my laptop and continuing on the emulator in my steam deck. For me, the fun part is learning how to do combos, that was the difficulty on moving from one game to another. But the game is a bit stale and yes it is linear compare to Budokai 3, you got your basic story that is pretty original compare to the movie and vs, but have Missions and for the first time an arcade mode. Besides collecting stuff to customize your profile, it's just a basic game. A pick up and play. But at least you will learn a bit about this game and to move to the sequel. Compare to the Punch and Kicks button, is more so called the Light and Heavy attacks buttons. The block damage is called "chip damage". But this game was started to expand the budokai games to be much more competitive. The stages feel so much as Tekken 1 and 2, being endless, like the hyperbolic time chamber. Due to this, they mix both the gameplay from budokai 3 and the fast paced movement with the mechanic of Shin Budokai, to form Infinite world. Infinite world is much more competitive but at the same time it feels a tad bit unfinished, but not to the same level of unfinished as burst limit. If I was to explain or even categorize the games it would've been like this Budokai 1 is the start of the series while being so limited in gameplay, attack are stock and copied from one another but it is a fun experience. It became the basic for future entries Budokai 2 expands a bit more on the gameplay and content, but the repetitiveness of the story mode to unlock characters in specific parts is tedious and is much more of a party game with its rock paper and scissors mechanic (not worse than Ultimate tenkaichi) . But it became a bit fast and each character has its special animation. Budokai 3 is far better than B2 by a mile, learning the mistake and decision it took, it expands and improves the gameplay to be competitive. Animations are faster, new inputs, more characters, more capsule, a new mode and story mode that is simple but fun. It supposed big but they had to cut some stuff but it's a satisfying experience. Shin Budokai exist to be a portable dragon experience, because this wasn't the only franchise that took this decision. But changes needed to be made. The combo has been overhaul, added burst for faster movement as well combo extender, aura burst for defense and attacks buttons being change. At least it was the start for the up and down directional input. Gameplay like I said is linear. Shin Budokai 2/Another road, I cannot say because I have not played it. But I did heard it became better while still being linear but adding stuff to it. This was released before IW so both SB 1 and 2 was influenced the development for IW. IW is still the next step of the budokai series but not next Gen. Believe it or not it's still a budokai game but it goes its own route compare to the tekken like experience that was B3. I love IW gameplay to death, loving making combos and learning other characters. I can't wait for the mods that is coming. Burst limit feels like a mix of Budokai 1 and 3 with a tad bit with SB. Burst Limit its slow pace like B1 in movement but has much more dynamics. The camera, the impact, the effects, great animation and attacks are fast. Gameplay still retain the budokai 3 and shin Budokai feel but things feels much more heavy, every attack has a feel to it. But the problem is that this game was rushed, there has been cut content and its unfinished. Graphic I do like but it do give that budokai 1 feel. It was the beginning for a new series of budokai gameplay but it was truly the end. ... We are not gonna talk about Evolution...

In my opinion, I expected for there to be more characters added in the game growing up. Yamcha has always been my favorite, but I was confused why he shown but not usable. But I'll live... Hopefully

Some of Shin Budokai gameplay is on DBZ Brust Limit. Overall the first Shin Budokai still good memories to me of the Gameplay and the is story mode is solid (facing Janemba as kid buu is a struggled) still Good Times.

Listen: all i'm gonna say is that Shin Budokai 2 is really fun to emulate on my phone.

2:00 It's actually very interesting. the Shin Budokai games have some mouth Animations files who are inside the game(recycled from Budokai 3), the problem are the characters models who don't have their mouth rigged.The only way to activate some mouth animation in this game is to replace the models with the Budokai 3 models.

Ah, shij budokai. Remember turning this game on just to use the dragon radar to listen to the soundtrack. I was disappointed by the lack of beam struggles but otherwise a great game. I believe I received this in the middle of a trip...somewhere, and I played it all the way home until I needed to charge my psp. I really enjoyed that video, wonderful comedy and editing, you used fantastic ass...ets. great writing and perfect video as usual. Happy new year by the way.

I bought all the Budokais on the PS2 so it was a no-brainer to get DBZ Shin Budokai for the PSP. I was pretty impressed with it and, for quite awhile, it was my go-to fighting game to get my fighting fix on the go. I'll admit, on some fronts, Shin Budokai lacked but I still loved it nonetheless. It was alot more fun, wholly, than other fighters on the system. The others, for some reason, just didn't feel like whole games. At any rate, it is and still is one of my all-time favorites of the past. Wish Sony still had handhelds to play on.

Ok let me start by giving you a +1 for using nier automata’s soundtrack. Been watching your content for quite some time now. You got much better props for that! Shin budokai is much less clunky than 3, I had over 400 hours across shin budokai 1 and 2 and I agree with everything you said. These were mainly network battles with friends and its a great experience, much different than battling the CPU if you can find someone to play with you’ll appreciate it Im sure. Although you might as well play the second one since they are the same game but 2 has more characters. The power level increases as you beat opponents in network battles it’s used sort of like a rank before online rankings were a thing. Thanks for the vid! Keep it up! I remember playing this game on psp I like how it tries to be like budokai 3 but being different at the same time one thing that always threw me off in the story is how the game starts off giving you op characters but then towards the middle it takes a big u turn and makes your opponent aggressive and has more health I remember struggling with the fight between goku normal form and Gohan super saiyan 2 🥲

I thought for a portable game at the time was absolutely amazing. I myself prefer Budokai 3 & Infinite World’s gameplay (mostly because I’m just used to square and triangle representing punch and kick instead of rush attack and smash attack); but it being similar enough to those game’s automatically makes it great. I myself kinda like the story (more than I do Another Road), but outside of that, the other modes are only “ok”. Can’t wait to watch your review on Another Road.

In all honestly the budokai series always made it few lack of content by adding "extras" like budokai's 2 buu tranformations and budokai what if stories but shin budokai was like this sneak peak at what an actual budokai on the good would look like

I enjoyed the weird "what if" story mode of the sequel "another road". Nothing too special but at least it's not a sub par retelling of the main story or movies. I'd honestly consider Shin Budokai unplayable because of the existence of the sequel improving most of the first game's issues.

I really enjoyed how this game allowed for mid battle transformations, more modern titles don't have any mid battle transformations or transformation removals. Always feels so unsatisfying and even a bit untrue to how the battles play out in the anime.

these two games are really good, but no matter what imo, they’ll never be a better game, than Budokai 3. everything about that game is as close to perfection as you can get. all done WITHOUT actual cutscenes. the gameplay, dragon universe, the roster at the time, the music, the intro, iconic lines throughout the game and menu. it’s 18 years old and i’ve grown up with it. no game will ever touch this one. especially not the new dbz games.

I beg you to do the tenkaichi series, supersonic warriors, the DS game attack of the saiyans, and Burst Limit. Please and thank you! =)

I guess one thing to point out with the first shin budokai is something that plagued dimps games around this time after the first budokai. Grammer issues in sentences, weird translations and in the case of this game, literally misspelling words. How that made it past when the game was translated I have no idea.

Shin budokai 1 follows the movie fusion reborn Shin budokai 2 follows majin buu being Release in future trunks time line .

It’s like Budokai and GT Final Bout had a live child and gave us this game.

Its funny i remember playing this game and i beat the story mode. The second game has a better story but man was it hard to beat it on the story mode .

I played Shin Budokai back when it first came out and yeah, the old Budokai ost was awesome, but hearing it again after most of it had been carried through from Budokai 1, 2, 3 and Tenkaichi 1 was tiring and felt cheap. It really made me worry that the next game would reuse it toom. Thankfully, it didn't. Also, gotta i really like the story even if it felt fan fictiony. Not sure how I'd feel if i played it today. But i remember feeling the scenario and writing being much better than I had expected

I didn't actually own and Budokai games on the PS2 and still haven't played them to thks day. However, I did have a white psp with shin Budokai. So I have a bias when saying the game was very fun. Definitely liked it more than the tag team game on psp... Another road was lame though.
