Yup. Sakura Taisen was another big one, but the sequel would take the cake. I have heard there is interest in doing it but the quantity of text is very large.

Good question. You think maybe some random Japanese guys translated Fallout, Fallout 2, Wasteland or original Elder Scrolls games from English to Japanese?
@sikem77
@sikem77 2 жыл бұрын
@@sarcasticguy4311 I would love to know if this is the case. The more I think about it though the chances of foreign gamers knowing at least basic English is much higher than Americans knowing Japanese.

@Derric Steal-yo-gurl Agreed. Consequences of losing wars, I suppose, they all end up learning English, but it's basic conversational English. I've studied Japanese culture for years and still don't get many of their idiosyncrasies and I'll bet that works both ways. This is probably part of the reason it takes so many years for fan translations to get completed. Programming is just one of the hurdles. Half of the world uses a kana-like alphabet and half uses the Roman-esque style in text for gaming and programming which is quite remarkable that a tiny few can extract and translate just so we can play a game never released in certain regions.

Dragon Force II? Whaaaaaaat? I remember watching my brother play Dragon Force back in the day and thinking it was so cool, but it was years before I even discovered what the name of it was. Now I'm learning about Dragon Force II? I think I need to rekindle my interest in this series. Thanks for the upload!

Dragon Force is such a unique game, I haven't played anything else quite like it. It's almost like a weird proto-RTS in the sense that you're moving multiple units around the map and trying to control territory, but it's also interesting to reveal different parts of the story by playing the same scenario from different factions perspectives. I kind of wonder why more games didn't explore this type of gameplay and expand on its mechanics more.

The games have strong similarities, but outside of combat things play out more akin to Ogre Battle with the armies being moved about the world map. Arguably somewhat similar to Brigandine as well especially with the warring kingdoms aspect. Its a pretty unique feeling game and I can't think of anything else quite like it.

I remember knowing this game was a Japanese exclusive and my older brother renting it for our Saturn along with X-Men vs. Street Fighter at some point, as the local store we'd get games from would get a lot of imports. Not being able to understand Japanese, it was difficult to play. I'd have my brother just take me into a battle and try to figure it out, but eventually would just go back and play the first game for the nth time. I didn't realize there was a translation for this, so naturally I'm gonna have to try this out in the near future.

Dragon Force was amazing to play!! It was a treat going through every story. As for strategy, I would just spam dragon crests lol. Against samurai, just have more dragons or weaken with another general first, then dragon-em. I watched at least one story of the second game years ago, but I had no idea this game existed back in the day. Your video inspires me to watch a couple play throughs! The story arc's are a great feature to the game.

This game seems to be better than Brigindine, a game it reminds me of by way of moving around the map, but that's not the point, no, the point is that this game is a great find if you're a fan of Ogre Battle for the PS1, or the aforementioned Brigindine, which it most closely seems.

I've played through Dragon Force II several times many years ago, well before the translation patch ever existed. I don't speak much of any Japanese, but I've played through most of the big Japanese-only Saturn RPG releases usually without too much trouble. Dragon Force II is one of the easier ones, the only real difficulty was having to memorize the different Japanese characters that represented different troop types. Because this game will punish you if you send the wrong troop types into a battle. As for the game, I really enjoyed it, and it did improve upon a few things compared to the first one with more special attacks, more troop types, and the ability to have 2 types for each general. However, the thing that still makes me prefer part 1 is that I prefer its sprite art style a bit more, and part 2 had an annoying repretative amount of battles in those caves with almost indistinguishable goblin armies.

As a huge fan of the original Dragon Force, I honestly don't care much for its sequel. While it does streamline certain aspects of the original and add some good features to the combat, ultimately I take issue with how the game all but entirely removes the platoon movements of the original as well as how the difficulty lies mostly in the truly tedious caverns. Where the original game would throw you into an overworld full of action that you had to make sense of, the sequel is barren and even railroads you into moving along a predetermined path. This makes the game much less variable, and not just between different playthroughs, either. Taking over the map minus the caverns is ludicrously easy as a result, which really kills the feeling of accomplishment of uniting the continent compared to the original. Then you have the caverns, which are easily the single worst aspect of the game. They are truly a chore to complete even when you have high level officers due to the enemies locking your skills. You just sit, wait for all their troops to die, then run the clock until draw and send out a ranged unit to chip away at the enemy officer. I can't think of an experience more antithetical to what made the original so great than this. I think the development team focused too much on the slightly annoying aspects of the original and not enough on actually improving upon what it did well. The sequel feels incomplete to me as a result and I now see why Working Designs didn't bother localizing it back in the day. On a side note, if you want another Dragon Force esque game, 100 Swords for the Dreamcast is worth trying.
