Drake D. Duane, M.D. is a behavioral neurologist, whose interests include focal cervical dystonia, essential tremor and tics; the first two on the basis of an unusual experience with spasmodic torticollis while on the staff of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and the last in association with his work in developmental disorders including Tourette syndrome. Dr. Duane is an Alpha Omega Alpha graduate with distinction of the Wayne State University, College of Medicine, in Detroit, Michigan; having received his undergraduate degree at the University of Minnesota in Psychology as a Regent Alumni scholar. His Masters degree is from the University of Minnesota. After two years of psychiatry rotation in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, he entered his residency at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine, at the completion of which he joined the staff at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, rising to the position of Associate Professor of Neurology at the Mayo Medical School.
In 1987, he moved to Scottsdale, Arizona, to establish the Arizona Dystonia Institute and become Adjunct Professor at Arizona State University. Dr. Duane has published over 160 papers and abstract, 19 book chapters, 17 published Letters to the Editor, and has edited four books. He is a member of the Movement Disorder Society, Dystonia Study Group, We Move, Tourette Syndrome Association, and of the Movement Disorders Section of the American Academy of Neurology, of which he is a Fellow. In 2013, he was appointed Clinical Professor of the Neurology at University of Arizona College of Medicine Phoenix.
His scientific presentations include the International Congresses of Movement Disorders, The Second, Third and Fourth International Dystonia Symposia, the American Academy of Neurology, the American Neurologic Association, the Tourette Syndrome Association, with movement disorder lecture presentations at the National Institutes of Health, the Mayo Alumni Association, and Ohio State University. His pharmaceutical industry-sponsored research includes Allergan, Athena-Elan, US WorlsMeds, Ipsen Pharmaceutical and Mentor Corp. A focus of his research is the development of neutralizing antibodies to botulinum toxin A and B. In this regard he has proposed the use of mycophenolate in the prevention of recurrence of botulinum toxin A antibodies and prevention of antibodies to the B form of the toxin. He has investigated the biological characteristics of patients with cervical dystonia, essential tremor and tic disorders, and comorbid risks for cognitive defecits, comorbid psychiatric states and conditions such as scoliosis. He has evaluated over 1500 patients with cervical dystonia and more than 125 subjects with essential tremor, and more than 100 subjects with Tourette syndrome. He has assisted at selective denervation surgery and used Botox®, Dysport®, Xeomin®, MyoBloc®, and Purtox® forms of botulinum toxin. Dr. Duane has served on the Medical Advisory Board of the National Spasmodic Torticollis Association since 1984, has served as the Chairman of the Medical Advisory Board becoming Emeritus Chairman in 2011. He is former Chairman of the Medical Advisory Board of Arizona Tourette Syndrome Association. His Foundation for Clinical Neuroscience has funded International travel awards for the best essay on cervical dystonia. His personal awards include Teacher of the Year from residents of the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine, the Benedict Lectureship of the Minnesota Academy of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology, the Ritcher Lectureship at Indiana University school of Medicine, Institute for Neurological Sciences in Buenos Aires, and the Geschwind Memorial Lectureship. . He is a recipient of the Dystonia Doctor of Excellence from the Dystonia Medical Research Foundation and Recognition Award from the National Spasmodic Torticollis Association. He is a fellow of the American Clinical Neurophysiological Society, the American Academy of Neurology and the American College of Physician. He served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Phoenix Symphony for 13 years and is past member of the National Academy of Sciences, American Association for the Advancement of Science, Child Neurology Society, American Neuropsychiatric Association, He advises undergraduates and graduate students of the Arizona State University, medical students at the University of Arizona and the A.T. Still Osteopathic Medical School.

As a patient of Dr Duane for 30 years I was thankful for his attention to careful testing and treatment of Cervical Dystonia. He was the only doctor who was able to diagnose my condition after over 2 years of pain & muscle spasms that occurred after trauma to my neck and seeing doctor after doctor including, pain medicine specialist MD's, PT specialist and Physiatrists' & Chiropractors I am so grateful to have been a patient under his care and will always be thankful for his compassion and expertise in the field of movement disorders in Neurology and his persistence in helping his patients get the best care.
