Canadian Pacific 8823, CP 9710 southbound pulling out of the hole at Mactier after meeting CP 113. Apparently the engineer took exception to being on KZfaq and decided to express his displeasure. The original drama video: • DRAMA! CP 9768 in Crai...

They act like we, as railfans, even care about who is runnin the train. Don't get me wrong, I talk to the nice crews. But I don't wake up some day and say "Hey, Jeff is driving that heritage unit this way. I better go see it, not because of the heritage unit, but because Jeff is the engineer"

And this is why I like train spotting in the uk. Often drivers will give some extra horn blows for rainfans and I once saw someone stop their train so someone could shoot a video.

You know what pisses me off about that is you're not chasing down a star in his own personal life, you are admiring what the person is doing in their professional life. Now I know this guy and a couple other jerks are the minority, and make no mistake I know the railroad is not a kind place to some who have never worked for one. But in my situation with very little family life I have tried and would love to work for the railroad (who has many who want to get hired here in Canada but few positions available). To make someone who is a railfan assume he is the type that works at Tim Hortons, first what is so wrong with that with little work out there? Second what is the assumption that he works at a minimum wage job about? Class warfare personally I hope I get to take his job one day.

+JayJr2007 I guess I'm lucky I barely take photos or video these days. I got a trip coming up on March break driving as far west as Denver. I'll be passing by Altoona which I've been to the curve once before after that most is all new west through Ohio, Indiana, Missouri, Kansas. Be passing through Columbus, OH, St. Louis, KC. The spot in Denver is a railfan hotel hotspot downtown by the yard. Then heading east along the transcon passing North Platte, Lincoln, NE for the night (another good view from that hotel). Last stop will be the Diamond Lodge at Rochelle, IL outside of Chicago which is another huge hot spot. Most of these places are used to railfans I guess. I don't understand what is up with CP these days. Hunter must be busting their balls too much and making them miserable.

You need yo figure out a way to hop on the frequency with a radio and respond, and say yeah, that would be funny and watch the radio go silent

It's funny. We've got crews that are unfriendly around here, but at least none of them actually say stuff about us. The only one who ever did was fired shortly after for unknown reasons. They think we're out to take pictures of them; but in reality, most railfans, if they wanted pictures of their ugly faces, would ask for one....

But the thing is, especially when a crew is doing manual work, there are managers and upper managers that will see your videos and pick it apart and use it as evidence to fry a lowly conductor or engineer, even when nothing happened, no one got hurt and no equipment was damaged. Stupid things like a Conductor who normally works a daylight job but got bumped to a night job and forgot to grab a pair of clear safety glasses... Three months down the road he's getting suspended for two weeks because some uppity-up watched a foamer vid and saw he was wearing dark glasses during twilight hours. I worked with a guy who was given street time because one of our favorite foamers got a picture of him resting his elbows on the handrails even though we were stopped at a crossing and waiting for a yard job to clear up. He was not maintaining proper 3-point contact in the photo and that was the reason he received a suspension, even though it had been months since the actual incident happened. I certainly do not condone or advocate rude behavior towards the railfans and I agree with my fellow railroader here that we depend on you more because you are the extra set of eyes. But at the same time those eyes have also come at a cost because of situations that arise from the videos or photos which cost us our paychecks.

I hate to see drama like this because it makes for an uncomfortable job on our part and an uncomfortable hobby on yours. We had a situation similar to this that was started by the foamers over the matter of propping the door open on the front. We were doing it because the 3,000 HP oven we were working on had no A/C or fans (aside from the guys with the cameras on the wayside) and it was well over 45C degrees (115F) with it closed. After weeks of having things thrown at us (mostly verbal, sometimes stale old coffee) I finally got down and asked the guy What Gives!? When he explained that the open door was ruining his shot and we were wasting all his time, money and effort in his hobby, I was so mad I could have punched him. Apparently his feelings were mutual. But rather than duking it out, I asked him if he wanted to let me know where he was set up at and I would close the door as we got to that spot. The very next time I saw him set up with his cameras, I jumped up, closed the door, sat back down and as we went by he gave us a thumbs-up. I opened the door again and all our problems were solved for a week or two. The rest of my crews heard about this situation and had apparently been so antagonized by this guy that even in the winter, whenever they saw him they would jump up and open the door to mess up his shot. SMH

That kind of crazy should never be tolerated & and people who take pleasure in ratting crew members out are POS human beings not one of us. Most of us do what we can to respect the crews and stay out of the way.

JayJr2007 I don't believe any of the fan videos or photos I described were meant to rat out the employees. It was purely situational, where some stuck up manager perused fan sites or channels looking for dirt and in those examples they found some dirt.
