Eliza Ivanova shows off her drawing style, skipping construction lines and going straight for the final lines using a mechanical pencil and blending stump. She focuses on silhouette-based drawing, influenced by her Pixar experience, and blends realistic shading with stylized silhouettes. She also talks about live drawing, anatomy, tips on using references, and developing your own style.

My problem is, I want my drawings to look exactly like the reference. That's a level of practice I'm finding out is extremely time consuming. I thought I could really draw but I wasn't even started yet, turns out.
@ProkoTV

That's a hard pursuit! Hopefully, you get to a place where you enjoy your resulting piece. But don't be scared to push and pull the drawing to make an image you like a little more than the original reference sometimes too.

Something that's helped me in my figure drawing group, is realizing that even the most realistic artists are designing. It isn't necessarily our goal to replicate, but to express what we're seeing while putting in a dash of what it is that we WANT to see. Even an artist with a style as traditional and realistic as Proko is observing shapes and values and making decisions rather than finding the answer. When you give yourself that freedom, you start to feel more comfortable.

Use a grid method and copy each square ? That is the beginning in my mind. Art becomes really interesting after that stage. Not being derogatory. You do you. Celebrate the small wins and just keep going.

Try and everything will work out. The main thing is not to try to make your work easier by redrawing while looking at a flat picture with a reference located 5 centimeters from your canvas. Ideally, put the picture with the standard further away in order to train the brain - to identify features and proportions, even better if you practice drawing portraits and other parts of the body or sketches of objects from life. The artist in this video draws well, but she is very idealistic; if a beginner tries to do the same, then his learning will slow down very much!

This is how I draw for the most part. Personally I just call it "mapping". I always hated the mess of construction so would just make little marks as land marks. Compare where they are in relation to each other and the lines get longer as I build. If you marked your landmarks well and pay attention to angles things are pretty proportional and easy to just fill in.

Have you ever done a video on how to make backgrounds for people that draw mostly characters? I draw full Figures and busts/headshots but my backgrounds are usually just blank black or white. I have tried drawing complex backgrounds but it distracts from the figure (and tbh I hate drawing landscapes/backgrounds).
@NATA5II
@NATA5II 5 ай бұрын
It’s in your text. Complex background and complex figure will fight for dominance. If you want your character to stick out, simplify your background. Study backgrounds, squint your eyes and look at what is the most important shapes.

Am I right? someone else with that??

Yes. I do the same thing and I realized for me it's a bad habit. When I concentrate and force myself to make what I picture in my head my drawing comes out better. I was told so many times not to use erasers and use what I slap down but no erasing mistakes and adjusting as I go is so obviously better. My art is really sketchy but I swear the drawings are better when I let it be messy.

For some, a reference is something to be adhered to strictly. For others, it's just a jumping off point or something to pick some details from. Like when you look at a recipe but change a lot of it for your final dish. It didn't mean that the recipe was there for no reason. It got you started. Eliza talks plainly about how she uses reference in the start of the video. There's nothing "bad" or "better" about either approach. Art isn't just one thing and that's a good thing.
