Stephen Bauman is a master. Really recommend subscribing to his channel. He's the rare artist who has great intellectual insight, historical knowledge, and superb drawing/painting skills. One of his best recommendations was the book *Art & Fear* Observations on the Perils (and Rewards) of Artmaking. For all the many angst-filled dread, depression, and lack of motivation for making art videos on KZfaq, it is nothing like this book which offers solutions or methods in an intelligent, respectful, and emotional way.

I think the most impressive thing about Stephen is his ability to explain and teach(I think the Proko crew in general does a phenomenal job picking artist who can do this). Stephen though has a very specific way he does it and it makes me feel like he was raised by teachers haha. The transfer of skills and knowledge to a teachable thing is not easy.

You both are, and the best prove may be what I have learnt from the combination of ideas from both of you, being just a simple self taught nobody who is by miracle able to represent now after a couple of years any human pose or face obtaining a good resemblance meanwhile struggling hard on oil painting.And I am so happy to see you guys cooperating.

Thank you for this! I really needed a reminder and a method to simply measure more. The center point really helps a lot with measuring too. It’s nice to have an objective static point from which to base all the other landmarks.

One of the best instructional videos on drawing faces I have ever seen, looking at the bigger picture is important (no pun intended). This is the way I used to draw before I was trying to learn any of the methods. I never really liked them because they don't feel natural and it was easy for me to get lost in construction of lines. I could spend hours tweaking little lines just to be dissappointed with the result.

I so wished I had this tutorial and more in the 1970's. I did great back then but lacked visual information. Books lacked such until atelier training became popular. I did not realized I could not draw well until the 1990's !!!

I think I really need the head muscles, and your tutorial on body muscles was a great help, but we need the head muscles as well, because mimeographing a portrait of a figure requires more than just constructing the form of the luminescence, and more than just the skill of sketching. You can create a separate paid project for this purpose

proko could you do a video on painting midtones first when doing a portrait vs starting from the darkest. The former is something that Sargent used, however id like a bit more clarity on both the methods and how they perform

Starting to draw an eye, nose, and mouth are beginners' way, but he establishes the structure first. The front, side, and top are nicely established first, then it's easier to position the eyes, nose, and mouth.

Im only it was afordable forme lol Also its expensive but probebly worth is based on how good he is at drawing heads, This isnt your average skillshare course that teaches you like 3 angles and thats it this seems to go far more indepth, If I ever get enough money in life this will be the first thing I get mark my words

There’s several- the leads range from H - B. One of the pencils is a Koh I Noor 2mm lead holder.

Could you do a video explaining how "measuring" is done? I see so many instructors showing and talking about measuring and the way they do it is like they assume the student already understands the basics of it. Please for the love of god can someone just explain it from scratch! Don't take for granted we know about this to any degree.

Is this still possbile, even tho I'm downscaling a drawing? Like lets say my reference is right in front of me and I have a sketch book. I don't want to make my sketch book to just have 1 drawing per page I want to fill it, so I downscale every drawing I do.

I feel like you’ll want to at least roughly know how to make the Loomis head (or something similar) in different angles so that you have that “construction” fundamentals to work off of. The key is that this is a ‘hybrid’ method. It builds off of the construction method and how that can be adapted for a more visual/intuitive method. Without the construction fundamentals, it becomes difficult to build the structures of your drawing after you have the rough outlines in.

@@AlfredEiji On the other hand without correct proportions it is almost impossible to get the drawing to look right even if you know the structure well. Unless you have a massive mental library careful analysis (angles,plumb lines, negative shapes, size ratios too but eyes are not good at measuring those so angles are usually more accurate) help keep the proportions in check. You can draw the whole face this way without any structural knowledge, but it gets very tiring and you need to be good at observation to pull it off. I feel like learning both seperatly then combining them is the most effective aproach. Imo relying on a construction method gets things looking stiff and slows down progression, and should only be used to get an idea of the general shape. This is only from my personal experience though so take it with a grain of salt
