Drawing A Kitchen Layout | How I Start My Kitchen Design Projects ✍️
In this video, I draw out a kitchen design/layout to scale by hand and explain my thought process and the choices I'm making as I'm doing it. I usually start all my kitchen design projects like this to get the ball rolling and get those initial ideas down on paper!
Thanks again to Laura & Jon!

I edited this down from 90mins of footage of me over explaining everything and talking through lots of different layout options but that video would have been ridiculous. 30 mins is long enough! So if there is anything you would like me to explain in more detail, leave a comment below and I'll try my best to answer. Thanks for watching! 😁

If you are open to the idea it would be great to see some of the footage you cut from this video in another follow up video. Just hearing your thought processes is extremely educational; in particular pitfalls to be mindful of and know why some designs ideas work better than others.

when i used to sell kitchen appliances i used to talk to the customer about the 'kitchen triangle' - that is the route between the fridge, hob/oven and sink - they need to work for you. It can be a real time saver if they're well coordinated.

Hi Michael this is Jon (laura and Jon) loved the video 🙂 We’ve changed the window for a two and a half metre wide bifold window so we can put a big sinkin the middle. We’re not doing sink on the island now, just a panoramic hob which we may be putting under a ceramic worktop to make it invisible. On the 2 dishwashers, a friend has done it and it gets rid of dirty dishes if you’ve already got a wash cycle on, plus they tend to have a flow of ... Dirty dishes in washer Clean dishes taken directly out of other dishwasher for use. And circulated that way instead of using cupboards. We’re also not doing a corner return on the cupboards. Watching Michaels videos enabled us to make some important changes before it was too late. You’re welcome to have renders and video of finished kitchen for the channel. Thanks again for your input.

@@lauraharbidge7702 Hi. Did you look at the information in my other post on the difficulties in venting a hob on an island? As an aside, if you don't plan on standing at the sink hand washing dishes, and have two dishwashers, why put the washing up sink under the window? You're not going to be standing there doing the dishes for have an hour. What you might be doing is standing there washing and prepping vegetables, so why not change the sink to a smaller prep sink, put he hob on the exterior wall so it can be vented properly and have a longer "party sink" on the island"?

Hi Jon, Thanks so much! Pleased I could help. The window sounds great and I'd be very curious to see the invisible hob if you go for it! Please do keep me updated with your progress, it would be great to revisit everything once it finished! It's going to look amazing! Thanks again for letting me feature your plans. 😁

I am also building my home and have been watching so much on the net. I just found this site and am happy I found it before I signed off on my design. Can you make a video regarding color. I am worried my dark granite will be to moody for a kitchen. I have a full wall of windows and a fireplace in the kitchen but the darker stone seems to anchor everything. Any thoughts on using darker natural stone as a backsplash, as most of your examples of stone are light in color.

I’m considering buying a small 624sq ft house 2 doors from me. The benefits are it comes with a double lot, so plenty of land to knock out the side of the house & build a much larger kitchen & bathroom. Your videos are helping me so much because I have never done this before! Thank you for sharing your knowledge with the world. God bless!

That was amazing, especially hearing you think aloud while sketching. How you pictured the morning routine made me fall in love with that idea of just leaving the corner in the upper right basically half empty so that it can be fully dedicated to a specific bunch of use cases in the kitchen instead of stuffing as many cabinets and even corner cabinets as possible into it, just for the sake of "you cannot have enough storage". That area becomes something like a "breakfast range" - I love it! And yes, I was surprised you are using pen and paper to get your thoughts and the creative process going. Something that I (being a User Experience Designer) also does. It makes you so focused on the first rough concepts around use cases and the spatiality of the room (area), or as we in the UX world call it, "Information Architecture".

Thank you for this great info. I have some design experience and am doing my best to help my son move a kitchen to another room which is smaller than his present kitchen, so this tutorial has been invaluable. Trying to fit everything in a tiny space and have room for appliances and storage isn't easy! Especially as I prefer symmetry too and it's going to be nigh on impossible.

This is amazing, please do more of these vids!! I'm designing my kitchen and im struggling, here is a quick overview of it: It's W:390cm D:380cm H:270cm. South wall (390cm): 100 cm door (left most) (for tall cabinets: 90cm fridgre, 60cm built-in oven) (unfortunately it has a split ac unit mounted on the wall at 220cm height, not allowing me to take my cabinets all the way to wall) East wall (380cm): 60cm built in cooktop, 60cm range hood, 60cm deep cabinets, and 35cm deep wall cabinets. North wall (390cm): 150 cm window (112cm from west and 115cm from east) (has the sink and 60cm wide dishwasher) (no wall cabinets planned, but might add depending on available storage needed, I'd rather not though) West wall (380cm): 150cm service window (115cm from south, 115 from north). kitchen bar outlooking onto the living room (meaning seats will be in kitchen). The wall is 20cm deep, so the bar will only take 40cm from the kitchen. Im aiming for a minimalistic looking kitchen that is not too cramped with wall cabinets, and i want it to give off an open and breezy feel when you walk in! What I'm struggling with is maintaining symmetry! I dont know if i should go with a 50 or 60cm wide cabinets, but I always end up with a combination of 60,60,60,70 or 60,60,90,40, or 60,60,30...60,40. I just can't get it right, and my designer is worse than me with no imagination:) More details and faced -Bottom cabinets are 91cm high (8cm floor base, 78cm cabinets, 5cm countertop). 60cm deep. -wall cabinets are not limited by height

Loved witnessing your thought process. I’m having an island approx 3m long max but the kitchen manufacturer has told me I can only have it 950mm wide (laminate) is that going to be too narrow to have the hob and bar stools opposite? An observation why are the clients having 2 dishwashers?
@kitchinsider
@kitchinsider 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! I don't think that is too narrow, a 900/950 island depth is quite common. If you did want that little bit more space/separation you could look at getting a linear hob (sometimes called panoramic hob). It's a busy family home and I think two dishwashers would be very helpful for them (and was part of the brief). I've done several kitchens with two dishwashers over the years. Everyone has different needs/wants. 😁

Of course, I forgot you were going for a venting hob. You may struggle to find a linear venting hob (I can't think of any off the top of my head). Like I said, I don't think 950 will be a problem but maybe keep an eye on the hob dimensions if you can get a slightly slimmer one, it all helps. Thanks so much! 😊

I know it’s been a tradition in kitchen design forever to place the sink under a window but I think it’s ridiculous to force the work flow to that standard when lighting design is so flexible now. When I design a new-build kitchen I start with work flow in relation to the way adjacent areas interact with the kitchen and also plumbing runs for other rooms.
@kitchinsider
@kitchinsider 2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! There are lots of instances where I wouldn't put the sink under the window. It really depends on the room layout and (importantly) what the client wants. There may not be an appropriate window, they may want the sink on the island etc...For this particular design/client brief I think it makes most sense practically and aesthetically to put the sink under the window. Since filming, they have decided to extend the window which I think will benefit the room and layout options on that run.

I think the owners would regret having the two dishwashers so far apart, with one so far from the sink. Why not put a dishwasher on either side of the sink, and the trash bins in the cupboards to the right, or even in the island directly opposite the sink.
