There are many ways to draw exterior walls in SketchUp. This video highlights a few methods that you can use when drawing walls based on an imported image file of architectural drawings.

I prefer the first method, although I use guides all the time wherever possible. I learned to draw in Parallel Projection so that you are sure all the lines are on the same level. And I make a Plan 2D layer for the line drawings. For extrusion into 3D I copy the walls on a new layer.

Hi Aaron, I'm new to SketchUp and have found your videos extremely helpful - thank you. I have a question with regards to this particular one: after completing the exterior walls, grouping it and saving to "Basement" layer, why is it necessary to make a copy, turn off the Basement layer and "paste in place"? I don't understand why we then continue to draw using the copy and keep the original group in the layer turned off? thanks

Great Vid Aaron. I really liked the second way and immediately thought of a little modification to it. Drawing two surfaces 6" (wall thickness) X9' (wall height) along the green & the red axes making each surface as a separate group. Then copy the surface to its respective location on the drawing and push pull it to the desired length. Repeat for next segment of wall & continue to finish all walls. Then move in to interior walls the same way. However, my conventional way I used to follow is doing all walls exterior and interior using guidelines. Then drawing on them using line command.

Great video., especially showing the different options, particularly the one on building the individual walls. The latter was really useful as I’m planning some structural changes for my home which I’m modelling from plans that I have.

Hi Aaron, I have a question. I imported multiple pdfs, as I'm working off some old hand-drafted plans. I scaled my first plan to the correct dimensions and was working from that. When I imported the second drawing, I also needed to rescale that one, once I imported it. However, .... when I go to rescale the second pdf (to a drawn line) it always prompts me to rescale the model. When I say no, the pdf does not scale itself to my line; and when I say yes, the whole model rescales again to the new line, throwing everything out of whack. Here is my question, how can I rescale the single (2nd) pdf to a line without a prompt to rescale the entire model again? There is probably a quick fix, but I don't know it yet. I should mention that I'm scaling using the ruler tool.

Great video Aaron. I knew already both of those methods. I find with your videos where I already know what you are doing it is the little things that I like to see. Push/Pull with the modifier key, I totally forgot that that was possible. And this shows my only Kryptonite to SketchUp. There are soooo many things to know that I forget a lot of them if I don't constantly use them. So I started a cheat sheet. Which is good, if I remember I have the cheat sheet. LOL

Through these instructional videos Aaron and Josh have reduced the learning curve in Sketchup and Layout. Thanks and please continue. One of the reasons I started using Sketchup 5 years ago was due to the ease of creating sections in architecture that were accurate. In some ways, almost too accurate depending on what you are trying to communicate to the plans examiner and client(s). Having said that, I have one pet peeve that is not exclusive to the Trimble videos but seems consistent with most of the KZfaq tutorials with few exceptions. That is, they are rarely if ever structurally correct. Why does this matter? Walls do not display the components that are use to build them which means they do not conform to Building Code. Roofs do not have the proper elevation above the wall because the approach is wrong. I could (but won't) go on. This is why extensions like Profile Builder and Medeek products are so invaluable. These products are developed by professionals that make the elements and components display correctly and yet they are easily customized. Thanks again to the guys at Trimble. You make it easier to use Sketchup and each edition continues to improve and well worth the price of a subscription. Just know a wall section that is a 5.5" rectangle with a face pulled to 8ft. that has a section cut through it is not a viable wall section in any jurisdiction that I know of.

Barry S. Thanks for the feedback! My previous job was in building design, and I have put my fair share of time into creating structurally accurate building models. While it is possible to create all of the framing in a house manually, you are right about using extensions like Profile Boulder or the Medeek suite. They make it much easier and so much quicker!

I just learned how to do things another way completely AND I gleaned another couple of techniques too! Gotta work harder on my layers too however I have done a slight variation whereby I grouped “zones” of the house and they were effectively non negotiable sizes or negotiable.... which then allowed for the play factor in getting a drawing sized up. Another “duffers edition “ drawing mode I really tried hard to incorporate was the golden mean sizing. Apart from the helpful snap of the rectangle I tried getting very close. Are there any tricks in settings or a add on that includes this “modality “? Thanks very much again Aaron.

Great video. Wondering how you navigate in 3d space, your view seems to be very fluid, without having to hit Orbit all the time to swivel around. Do you have a specific type of mouse or use a combo of mouse and trackpad or something else? I move around so slowly as I have to keep reorienting my view with orbit, grab & zoom. Any tips here would be much appreciated. Thanks

Another tip writing from an 'old' architect (me) is to add up all the individual dimensions across a frontage and then use the total as a means of scaling. That way you avoid cumulative errors. This method is normal when out surveying in the field - always do running dimensions!

@@SketchUp Thanks for the quick reply. That helps. I am still on a learning curve here. I am used to working with layers from my years of working in Illustrator and Photoshop. In those programs, any changes made will be included in the active layer selected. It took me a while to figures out that an object has to be assigned to a tag in SketchUp. The SketchUp program is great. After only a couple of days, I am further along that I was after a couple of weeks of struggling with AutoCAD.
