Useful tip : Next time you go to your local art shop to stock up on your usual art supplies, buy a single colour of something that you've never tried before, this could be a type of paint, crayon, ink, or even a different kind of paper to work on. This always leads to great results and can give your work a fresh new outlook. This video is the result of an impulse art shop buy !
Sometimes it's good to explore mediums that you may not be too familiar with, it can bring fresh ideas to your artwork and lead you to become more adventurous with composition, style or colour. I've always like to try and discover new techniques to try.
I hadn't used this drawing ink (Winsor & Newton) for a while but picked some up on a recent art shop visit. I really like the combination of the fluidity of the ink and the marks made with the charcoal pencil, whatever your particular style I recommend experimenting with these two mediums.
On Amazon :
Winsor & Newton Drawing Ink 14ml (Cobalt)

Derwent set of 6 charcoal drawing pencils with sharpener amzn.to/2RF1geO

Dan, I have watched your art in process for 3yrs now. I haven't commented but a few times & it's been a while. You work has grown so much it blows my mind. I'm writing now just to say exactly that. I've always loved what you do & an added bonus is creating inspiration to me as well as a time to relax as its so relaxing to watch. That's about it, great pieces, music & time. Good luck always & thank you so very much for sharing with the rest of us. Sheila

Thanks very much. It is always good to read such positive comments and I'm pleased to know that you have found them inspirational, the idea for these demos has always been to encourage others to get creative and experiment with the techniques.

I love the boldness and certainty of your lines -- something I have never felt capable of doing. Watching your videos inspires me to just TRY instead of overthinking. And your videos are always fascinating! Thank you so much for sharing these.

These videos and techniques have really inspired me to create more each week. They help me loosen up mentally and think (or not think) clearer when planning out a woodcut or linocut. I also do a lot of photography and am starting to experiment using these techniques with direct transfers and tape transfers. A lot of stuff doesn't work out well but that's really not the point. Staying loose and open to what's developing in front of you is really the fun of it all. Thanks for another video and keeping us motivated.

Fred V Thanks very much for the interest in this new demo, my main aim with these videos is to encourage creativity and maybe explore new unfamiliar techniques. I appreciate all comments and feedback and hope they provide some inspiration.

I’d be so grateful if you could let your fans know which charcoal brand/type you use. I haven’t found anything to give such dense black lines as you achieve nor anything produced in what looks like pencil shaped sticks that you use. Irena

I have experimented with different brands, one of my favourites is made by Jacksons art supplies (available on the website) try the vine charcoal sticks. I also use charcoal pencils and black chalk.

This is stunning! It reminds me of stained glass - I think you should get commissioned to do some windows for some large public building (maybe you have?!). You make it look so easy because you're so good at this - I know how hard this would be for me to do. Just a question: how do you seal & protect it after = especially the charcoal? Thank you very much for this.

Jenny Hughes Thanks for your positive feedback on this video, I hope you give it a try. I always spray the charcoal work with a fixative spray but a good alternative is a cheap hairspray.

Hi Dan. This is great and I love the combination of ink and charcoal. Can I ask what paper you used?
@DanTirels
@DanTirels 4 жыл бұрын
I use a heavyweight cartridge paper usually 160- 200gsm works best, the thin papers tend to warp slightly but I find the cartridge paper has a good surface to draw on with the charcoal. Use a better quality paper for more advanced work. Thanks for watching.

I'm working with a charcoal pencil but you could just use a stick of charcoal. Needs fixing with a spray yo prevent smudges.
