Dan Tirels Economy Monoprint. Simple quick demo ! (3 colour layers)
Use recycled materials, no specialist equipment needed. Simple but effective technique using acrylic paint mixed with silkscreen printing medium.
I wanted to show how you can achieve great mark making results and apply them to your own work, I would normally allow drying time between each layer. Remember to make a registration point on each colour plate to allow for easy line up. For some finished examples visit my website dantirels.co.uk
Materials used : scrap cardboard, plastic bag, System 3 acrylic paint and silkscreen medium (Daler Rowney) Pencil, roller, and some paper.

If I try to work with acrylic and retarder, I should know the scale of the retarder. It is not easy, and acrylic sticks, and the plastic, who I did into a frame, cannot be cleaned. So oil color is better to handle, and I better wait for to dry. Thank you so much for your time and work! I take it as a gift, who is very, very helpful to me.

Jenny Hughes Thanks, pleased you found it useful, you can improvise with other found materials it's good to experiment. The plastic is from old carrier bags that I cut up, you can wipe them and use them more than once.

Love your Sculptures , can I ask what is the material you use for the finished pieces and are they made over the cardboard or do you do a lost wax process?
@DanTirels
@DanTirels 6 жыл бұрын
Neena Me Thank you for your positive comments about my work. The small sculptures have a basic structure of recycled cardboard then layers of strong cement tile adhesive is applied in layers building up a very hard and textured surface (similer to ceramic) I then apply paints and varnish to achieve the desired effect. I'd love to work with bronze and have them cast, this is just a low budget alternative.

Thank you for all the info! I was wondering how long it takes for your prints to dry when using the silkscreen medium?
@DanTirels
@DanTirels 5 жыл бұрын
Marilyn Healey The silkscreen medium slows the drying of the acrylic paint by about 10 minutes, depending on the thickness. I find oil paint works better as it does allow more time to work with. Thanks for watching the demos, hope they are helpful.

Dan hi, Love the work you do. What is the paper you use to apply the paint?? I'm using baking, or wax paper, which is a bit stiff. Cling wrap doesn't do it for me. Yours seems to be more pliable. Thanks, Phil

What does the silkscreen medium do? Keeps the colors from drying quickly on the plastic bag?
@DanTirels
@DanTirels 6 жыл бұрын
Francesco Gallarotti Yes, acrylic paint dries too fast for this technique so I use the medium so I can work with it longer. You can use paint retarder or just use oil based paint instead.

Like your demos Dan. Thanks. Do you have a video that shows how to measure up a 4-or 9-panel cutout?
@DanTirels
@DanTirels 4 жыл бұрын
Make a template from card the size of the panel, and a small strip of card that is the width of the space between each panel. Simply draw around the template move then using the strip as a guide, repeat until you have the number of panels you need, cut out and that's your stencil, I hope this helps. Thanks for watching.

Your technique is very interesting: I cannot figure out what material you are using for your ‘plate’! Unless it is silk?? And how do you clean them? Do you use cold wax for the wax part?
@DanTirels
@DanTirels 6 жыл бұрын
Kat McGee I always like to use recyled materials, so the printing is done with plastic carrier bags and the wax is simply an old wax candle, hope you give it a try, good luck with the results.

Would you share please what “plastic foil” is. Thank you
@DanTirels
@DanTirels 4 жыл бұрын
It's the foil that you often get used in packaging, its not foil but described as metallised plastic. Not to be confused with the aluminium foil used in cooking. It has lots of mark making potential.

How many "impressions" do you get out of a plastic bag "plate"? They seem to hold up under the strain of a lot of mark making. Nice final print.
@DanTirels
@DanTirels 5 жыл бұрын
Karen Parker As long as you don't damage the surface (I always use a blunt pencil) they can be re-used many times. I keep seperate ones for each colour and store them flat you can just wipe off the unused paint before it dries.

I'm using your various techniques in my class for seniors, so thanks very much. I could not find "siklscreen printing medium". Is it for retarding drying? Is it for thinning? I bought "Screen Retarder Base" in the hopes that it's the former :)
