Yeah, and I hate - hate-hate-hate-HATE - those sudden abrupt endings. I thought Type O Negative's were bad, but this one I especially hated. I hated it so much that I did a bit of copy-n-paste editing and created extended outro to faded out (resulting in a 9-minute duration for the song). Perhaps I'll go back and work on a way to make the abrupt ending work, like with some echo or reverb or something. Abrupt endings are the worst cop-out for a song ending ever. Paul O'Neill once critiqued the fade-out for "not having the creativity to make a formal/proper ending", but just cutting it off is even worse - it's sloppy and lame. If i wanna hear songs cut off like that I'll fill a cassette tape to capacity where the last song doesn't quite fit.

This is the song DT became popular with. They were betting on the ballad "Another Day", but, suddenly, this 8-minute song was taking into radio rotation instead. Iconic song since then.

Under a Glass Moon one of the most underrated songs in their catalog. One of the most complete albums in terms of great songs from start to finish. No stinkers, all killer, no filler. Even The sexaphone-infused ballad Another Day is awesome on its own merits. Fun fact, this album won MetalSucks' March Madness a few years ago, going head-to-head and beating Master of Puppets, Rust in Peace, and many other masterpieces. Says a lot about the awesomeness that the fans gave it that kind of love.

This song is based on Hamlet. It's about destiny, honour uncertainty and vengeance. Most the lyrics call back to his to be or not to be soliloquy on the ambiguities of death and what lies beyond. He's basically questioning whether he should carry out fate and kill his uncle and inevitably die aswell. Sooo he basically becomes desensitised to death, satirically mocks life for its deception and deciets and embraces death for the finality and ultimate purpose it holds. Great song

The idea of not having control and the world leaving him behind refers to me of the oaths of the feudal age with honour overriding freewill. And the classical idea of fate. The Moirai spinning the wheel of life or the wyrd in Anglo Saxon belief. Where all control is with the Gods which mock and torment the living by forcing them into their destiny

The song intentionally cuts off like that, because part of the song deals with how sudden death can be. The sudden ending of the song is just like an unexpected death of a person. Another explanation is that it was inspired by The Beatles’ Abbey Road side A ending, and MP explains that the melodies are building up and it just “pulls the carpet out from under you”. When asked about the abrupt ending while at a drum clinic in Atlanta in 1999, Mike Portnoy explained “We had all this tension, and it just kept building and building, and we had no idea where to take it, you know? So we decided to just pull the plug on it, like The Beatles did with She’s So Heavy.”

Influential song. I prefer the Beat Club version, 1981 I think. Yeah its Paul, not Bruce, and just Dave and Adrian without the new guy that I can't remember his name, but we get to see Clive a little, no Nicko either. They're young too, the way I remember them. New guy adds a guitar and that makes it harder to tell them apart. There's another early version with Bruce that I like too. I wish they would do some comparison videos, this one would fit. A Priest song, maybe Victim from the US Festival and the Seminole Hard Rock. Maiden and Priest were two of my favorites as a teen in the '80's, there are many videos done 30+ years apart and the songs are great, seeing and hearing how the bands have grown and changed, priceless.

Lyricist Kevin Moore refers to Shakespeare's Hamlet, as told from Prince Hamlet's point of view. The lyrics allude heavily to the play, echoing Hamlet's desire to give in to his urge to gain revenge for his father at the cost of his own sanity. Over the final moments of the song, James LaBrie can be heard singing the song's only direct quote from the play: "O, that this too, too solid flesh would melt". Therein, Prince Hamlet is pleading for escape from his mortal trappings.

This was my intro to DT. A syndicated rock station called Z-rock was on AM 1480 in NY at the time. They started playing this. Today, they're my second favorite band.

This is a challenge. I dare you both to listen the song "Octavarium" by Dream Theater. If you two want to listen it, prepare yourselves for something beyond music :)

I don’t mind some Dream Theater every now and then. I recall when I first discovered them I went on a spree and got several of their albums at once and would listen to them constantly. I kinda grew out of listening to them as I started to listen to the more extreme end of metal but I’ll still spin Scenes From A Memory every once in awhile.

Dream Theater are not really known for their lyrics, but I absolutely adore their lyrics. Their one liners are just out of this world. So many in this song. Favorite one is from Metropolis “I was told there’s a miracle for each day that I try”

so who slowed this down? the video was this way, or you guys made it sound like this? it's both lower in pitch, and slower in speed than the real version.

I mean... I love DT, one of my favourite bands, but this edit made LaBrie's voice not worse. I prefer post 2000s LaBrie voice to his 90s one.

I always remember hearing the first album when it first came out. I think I first heard it in Shades a HM record shop in London. They would play the latest release Images and Words took a good few years to follow mainly thanks to Derek signing them Images and Words was my favourite DT album for a good few years. Had the privilege of seeing them both nights at the Marquee in Charing Cross. Good memories
