The drummer on this song is Mike Portnoy. He was the drummer on A7X's Nightmare album, because he was The Rev's favorite drummer and The Rev once said that he was the only person he would ever let sit behind his kit.

Man this song takes me back to their 1992 Images and Tour tour. I saw them at this really small club that probably fits 500 at most and packed in like sardines. Can’t remember how we (my twin brother and a friend) got in the front but we did. Have some pictures from a disposable camera (yikes) we got in. Come to think of it, that’s the one band tshirt I wore a lot. Still have it too. Junior in high school, no worries, stress or bills. All I cared about was the next show. Great great times then to be a teen.

@@iamacharliest tbh I disagree, the only parts that connect are the intro and outro in root of all evil, and the lyrics/theme reminder near the end of Octavarium
@iamacharliest
@iamacharliest 2 жыл бұрын
@@mirkecWii Well The Answer Lies within has a couple of melodies from Octavarium in there too. But also for the appreciation of what the album is, a cycle. Listening to it from beginning to end starting on that root of F then Octavarium starting an octave higher and finally finishing on that same root note with every part in between climbing a semi-tone. I think listening to the album in order adds to this experience, the song is great in its own right sure but knowing the theme of the whole album and the related lyrics just adds to it in my opinion.
@mirkecWii

@@iamacharliest I do agree with the last sentence but Alex is not that musically versed and he 100% will not hear the F scale in the album. Every album from Dream Theater is absolutely mind-blowing. I recommend everything from Dream Theater. Metropolis Part 1 from this album just blew me away when I first heard it back in 1993. Explore the albums Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence and Train of Thought. These albums will change your musical perspective. Actually, all of Dream Theater's albums will change your musical perspective. They do have a few poppish, slower songs, but just about anything from Dream Theater would be a great recommendation to react to.

You hit the nail. The album "Images And Words" has been hailed as a starting point of a whole new genre, progressive metal. You should check out the videos the group did about when they searched replacement for Mike Portnoy. The shortlist is rather impressive, the final two being Marco Minnemann and their current drummer Mike Mangini. For Minnemann, please check out Steven Wilson and the group Aristocrats which features guitarist Guthrie Govan and bassist Bryan Beller. But, the group has a certain tendency of overdoing things, money back if you can see the fingers flying, playing because they can.

These are some of the Greatest musicians ever! It's an acquired taste for sure but it's well worth putting in the effort to follow along. You can listen to the same song on 20 different occasions and catch something different each time. It's so much better than a repeating riff throughout the whole song, that shit becomes like Chinese water torture. Example: "it takes two to make a thing go right" sure there's a place for that, just like there's a place for McDonald's and a place for Ruth's Chris.

Dream Theater Finally! I've listened to all of their song all my life. You should do METROPOLIS PT. 1 and DANCE OF ETERNITY! That's the true essence of Dream Theater! Dream Theater is known for virtuosity and hundreds of time signatures in one song. Octavarium has one of the best Petrucci solos ever, if you have the time, do it! More Dream Theater!

Metropolis Part 1 and 2 are my favorite songs from DT. You might want to do Part 2 as a series since its a whole album and its amazing. Same with 6 Degrees of Inner Turbulence Its a 42 min long song that split in 6 parts. Glad you got to hear some Dream Theater.

I remember waiting for this video to premier on MTV. Kevin Moore one of the original band members was my ex husband cousin. Loved every song on this cassette. They have come a long way since then.

Dream Theater members came together around 1985 in Berkeley school of music... Mike Portnoy (drums) met John Petrucci (guitar) and John Myung (bass), who were bandmates from high school. They all loved metal and prog artists like Rush, King Crimson, Yes, Genesis, Frank Zappa, etc. so they combined the 2 genres. The band was called Majesty, and keyboardist Kevin Moore, a friend of Petrucci, joined w/ Chris Collins (vocals)... Majesty wrote demos and got signed in 1988, but opted to record a new songs for an album w/ vocalist Charlie Dominici. Their debut album 'When Dream & day unite' was released in 1989, but they had to change the band name to Dream Theater (suggested by Portnoy's father after a movie theater) ... However, the band could not get a tour or any promotion for the record. Dream Theater had only played a few small gigs... they mostly rehearsed and wrote more music. Going into 1991, they needed a new singer... they had a full album written, but no way forward. They found Canadian singer James LaBrie that year and he was the perfect fit, being operatically trained and a powerful voice. Their new demos generated interest and Dream Theater was picked up in 1992 by Pantera's Atco label. Released that year, 'Pull me under' was released as a radio single and Dream Theater went on their first tour, playing clubs... then MTV put 'Pull me under' on rotation and the 2nd Dream Theater album 'Images & words' went gold (half million copies sold in US) Mike Portnoy was Dream Theater's 'captain' and co-producer for 25 years, but he opted to leave the band in 2010... he wanted to explore other musical projects... Since then, he has recorded & toured w/ Avenged Sevenfold, Adrenaline Mob, The Winery Dogs, Flying Colors, Transatlantic, Sons of Apollo, etc. He recently played drums on John Petrucci's solo album 'Terminal velocity' in 2020. Dream Theater recruited drummer Mike Mangini and carried... Jordan Rudess (keyboards) joined in 1999... following the exits of Kevin Moore and Derek Sherinian (who formed the band Sons of Apollo w/ Mike Portnoy)

@LanguagesWithJamie
@LanguagesWithJamie 2 жыл бұрын
@@MBBGun14 he’s definitely top of his game but for me I always find it hard to hear his bass in the mix, at least not as well as the other 3 instruments mentioned. I will say though, watching The Dance of Eternity live in Budoken (think that’s the one anyway), blew me away, the composition and way they all play the same notes on their different instruments is incredible. The part where both Johns are in unison is truly a musical talent few would be able to pull off

This Band is amazing on all levels. I saw them in 1994 at a small venue and still saying this is one the the best shows I have ever seen. Just the level of musicianship these men show is staggering. At the time the band line up was James LaBrie (vocals), John Petrucci (guitars), Mike Portnoy (drums), John Myung (bass), and Kevin Moore (keyboards). Just a all around amazing show of music but by far the best memory I have is during a break for the band Petrucci came out and sat on a speaker and just started playing the some of the most amazing guitar music my jaw dropped. There is so many amazing songs that you could listen to by them it is hard to pick and choose but some of my favorites are "space dye vest" and "Hell's Kitchen" the second song really shows off how amazing Portnoy's drumming is.

LOL Bro, congratulations as the rest of us long time Dream Theater fans happily and heartily welcome y'all into the fold. I've been a fan ever since this album came out (1992) and trust me when I tell you it gets better and better. These guys helped define the progressive metal genre as we know it and are beloved around the world. I think of them as basically what Rush would be if they were a metal band. Each of the musicians are virtuosos on their respective instruments and they've done some AMAZING tunes since then, so by all means check them out. I'd love to see y'all's reaction to more DT.
