In this episode of #thedailydoug, I'm returning to the 12-Step Suite from Dream Theater. We listened to This Dying Soul in May, and we're continuing on with The Root of All Evil from their 8th album, Octavarium. This is a hard driving track with some great riffs and solos from their live Score performance in 2006. I hope you enjoy!

Once you get more familiar with the songs in this 12 Step Suite, you'll be able to spot all the quotes and recurring motifs from the previous songs incorporated into the newer ones. The final "movement" of this suite is almost entirely composed of previous material.

Yep. I miss bands that do these kind of motif-driven songs and albums, where you push one idea to the absolute maximum. Dream Theater used to be really good at this. They have recently done more "singles" if you will. I would love for them to get back to more grand ideas. Simple, catchy, melodies with more complex layering underneath. Maybe they will again

I love it when someone gets as giddy about that foreshadowing melody at the end of the song. I too heard the song "Octavarium" before the "The Root of all Evil" and I geeked out when I heard this part too especially once I learned the concept of this album. They sure are clever bastards!

Adding to this (it is what you say essentially, but it needs expanding on for those who don’t know), each track goes up a step in the F scale: Root: F Answer: G These walls: A I walk: B (they could’ve made it Bb, don’t know why they didn’t) Panic: C Never: D Sacrificed: E Octavarium: F
@periclesrocha

@@iancust8932 the chimes between These Walls and I Walk Beside You are in Bb. Their concept was to write over the full chromatic scale starting in F, not necessary the key of F. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octavarium

14:00 you are absolutely correct. That final melody is the "Medicate me, infiltrate me" melody from the second section of Octavarium. Also that final note is a C#, which leads straight into the next song in the Twelve Step Suite, Repentance, which is mostly in C# minor.

They still play The Root Of All Evil very often live and I'm not ashamed to say that I nearly cried singing this song when I went to see them for the second time. It's a very special piece for me and many others who found understanding and comfort in this music during our darkest hours, when perhaps family wasn't there for us. Much love from Argentina, love what you do. Looking forward to your reaction to the next piece in the suite... I think you'll LOVE it.

Both octavarium and the 12 step suite require multiple listens, because the foreshadowing and callbacks in each of the songs requires knowledge of songs later in them to fully appreciate both the current and upcoming songs. The next 2 songs in the 12 step suite are I would say much more callback filled than the first 3, so make sure you really keep those songs in mind when listening to them.

I've wanted to point this out since you did Octavarium. The 8 spheres on the cover represent the band's albums, but also a scale on a piano. There are birds flying in the background between the spheres which are the black keys on the piano. Also, you caught the musical reference to the title track, Octavarium, but there is also a reference to the last two songs in the Suite, The Glass Prison and This Dying Soul. Around 9:15 minutes in your video and then 10:18.
