Just got this and it looks like it could've literally been made in Dreams lol. That being said though the setting and theme make this a huge breath of fresh air. I'm honestly surprised by how much I'm enjoying it.

Dreamscaper is a CLEAN and aesthetically pleasing romp. Each weapon feels unique and the combination of skills and spells also has enough depth that while "repetitive" it always has a FRESH feeling. If you have a specific combo you like, unlock it and start with it each and every time . . . which might allow you to start off powerful or stumble upon the power later. The motion and soundtrack of the game is top notch. I liked the growth between each character and gradually revealing what the world actually is. There aren't that many roguelike action combat style games which have such a based and firm world frame point. The level of depth in the meta progression across the characters, the world unlocks, and the journey to unlock everything is PLEASURE because you will inevitably get better at the same bosses while finding your own preferences. It is an odd thing to say, but if you also have a battle with demons and you go through this it can be a truly 4th wall breaking experience if you allow the nuance of what is happening to be a point of inflection. One thing of note I think Pixel messed up on is that arguing repetition and monotony is kind of misguided. Weapons and Spells are unique enough that just being open to try the new weapons completely throws this out the window, especially if you don't lock in your boots which impact the exact dodge mechanic you will need INDIVIDUAL MUSCLE MEMORY FOR. Some boots and with certain weapons completely change up the rhythm of the game. The fastest boots might allow a ranged focus build with or without spells so you are more playing a dodge game instead of "mash heavy." Meanwhile some of the slower boots might cause stutter or have much more smaller i-frame windows AND smaller distance between, but can explicitly timed to have maximum "invulnerability " at a consistent rhythm. Some boots have a quick responsive activation window BEFORE i-frames become active "which might be mid dash, instead of at the start or closer to the end" while other boots activate the i-frames at the beginning and the sluggish movement extends that window but it leaves you extremely vulnerable at the end, while the former might be mashable so you can constantly zip around. The problem with Dreamscape in this regard is that it is too deep for the genre, each boot can dramatically alter the exact same builds and change the optimal timings. The other problem is the journey for extremely good players will be short, sub 12 hours while an average gamer might get 40 before they are satisfied. It needs additional "post-game" content, yet it is also feature and content complete? It has the weird effect that it was GOOD for a long time and unlike Dead Cells or other big name roguelike-lites which have an exhaustive pool of things to keep doing or finding this just, ends. Take that for what you will, some games want you to keep playing forever and thats fine, but it is kind of refreshing that the game can set you up where after a certain point it has met that minimum and you just feel that you are at the "end" of the journey. Sure, you can try doing speedrunning or no-hit runs. Sure you can push and try to find the literal best in slot for all the things, but it is not the same as any other former or unmentioned game of the genre. Once I beat the final boss a few times and nearly unlocked everything, I felt satisfied. I can't personally say a lot of games were consciously designed with this in mind, but the reflection of what the world is within the game makes it clear that this was at least to me . . . . a topic touched on by the game developers. Dreamscaper is a condensed, extremely refined and deep experience . . . so much so that it leaves wanting more and it doesnt need it. If they were to add more monsters and complexity to the dungeon seed mechanic, it would be icing on the cake? I can only hope for a sequel, because not many games come out this polished and temperamentally fulfilling.

I think all Rogue games have their monotonous times and repetitiveness. But having a long run and then dying and going back to the beginning is what I look forward to that challenge

I'm very tolerant of repetitive gameplay in a Roguelike if there's a satisfying sense of progression, where I'm regularly unlocking upgrades that make my character more powerful on future runs. I know this game has "real-world" upgrades that increase your power in the dungeons, but it's unclear to me whether they're impactful enough to be satisfying.

I just bought the game last night, I beat the first boss but after I entered 2nd dungeon, I died from normal monsters on first room and again I started back to 1st dungeon. I feel frustrated knowing I will have to repeat 1st dungeon. I quit the game. I might have to uninstall this game lol

That's the flow of games in the Rogue Like genre though. You get as far as you can, die, and start again but with little tiny boosts that help you get a little further each time. Also considering each floor is randomely generated, you wont be going through the "1st dungeon" again, you'll be going through a different, random dungeon lol.

the 7.5 score didn't really match his review. He mostly spoke really good about the game and had very little bad to say about it so i was expecting like a 8.5 score out of him and he end up giving it a 7.5 which it really didn't go with his review. I love the game myself and the music is one of the best soundtrack that seen in a game in a while. My score is 8.6 0ut 10
