Today I want to cover some interesting and unexpected benefits of potassium.
Many people already know that potassium supports a healthy heart and healthy blood sugar levels and helps balance bodily fluids. But, there is so much more to potassium.
You need a lot of potassium. The body requires 4700 mg of potassium every day. You don’t require even a fraction of that for other nutrients.
Potassium supports two major areas: the muscles and the nerves-and it’s essential for energy production.
Many foods people say are high in potassium, like fruit, whole grains, beans, and potatoes, are not actually good sources of potassium. The phytic acid in whole grains can even block potassium.
The best sources of potassium are leafy greens-especially Swiss chard and beet tops. Avocados are also an excellent source of potassium. Adding fish and beef to your diet with vegetables is another great way to get the potassium you need.
Causes of a potassium deficiency:
• A lack of vegetables in the diet
• Experiencing stress
• Consuming too much sugar
• Consuming too much caffeine
• Consuming too much alcohol
• Taking diuretics
• Consuming too much salt
• Experiencing an injury
• Going through a surgery
Unexpected benefits of potassium:
1. Cognitive benefits
2. Cerebellum support
3. Mood support
4. Stronger muscles
5. Protection against leg cramps
6. Countering the effects of high sodium (salt)
7. Supporting regular bowel movements
You can also try my high-potassium Electrolyte Powder to help achieve your potassium requirements, improve your endurance, and support your health. Just remember to take more sea salt if you're exercising while taking a high-potassium electrolyte powder.

Great video! We use Dr. Berg's Electrolyte powder and LOVE it! ❤️ In the past, both my husband and I have had symptoms mimicking a heart attack. Got it reversed before full blown kidney stones. I will stick with Avocados and supplementing with Potassium chloride ( not Citrate as apparently the Now version is sourced from fermentation off/ from corn source of some type)

Thank you Doctor for being so clear in presenting the information about possible potassium and sodium deficiencies and their ratio. The recommended daily intake of potassium would be 4700mg/day. What should be the desirable values in blood? the normal range depends on the laboratory. but the normal range does not tell us what would be desirable. Thanks again. Your channel is very good.

In sourdough, the lactic acid produced by the fermentation itself, produce an enzyme called phytase, which 'pre-digests' the phytic acid during fermentation. Do we know if that eliminates the possibility of phytic acid acting negatively towards our body after we digest sourdough bread? I consume homemade sourdough bread I make myself at 30%-40% wholegrain rye and the rest very strong white bread flour unfortified, and in a moderate to low overall consumption. I would appreciate any feedback from the Doc! Keep up the good work!

Interesting! In plants over 97% of the potassium is in the plant sap EXCEPT when the plant starts filling fruit with nutrients.. then the fruit (or grain or whatever) is acting like a 1 way gateway as potassium is carrying the sugars and nutrients to the fruit. I see a lot of correlations with plants and humans on a nutritional level. Thanks Dr Berg!

Late to the comments as usual BUT I wanted to share an interesting experience I have every summer with my salt water pool. I'm SOOOOO glad I found this information as the salt water pool gave my husband and I terrible leg cramps while in the pool! Bummer huh? I didn't think to use potassium to counter it!! Boy I know what to do this year!! I'm going to take potassium citrate and put it mixed with water in a spray bottle with some magnesium and put that on after swimming. Chlorine also depletes vital minerals so it's a good idea with either type of pool. Oh and I can concur completely with this list of benefits! Totally experience all of these.

A few questions Dr. Any evidence that keto diet causes low potassium levels since insulin activates sodium potassium ATPases in most body cells, which may lead to increase in absorption of potassium by the cells. Do you disagree with the RDA for potassium? Do you think it is too high ? Any other RDA you might disagree with Thank you

I started 3 months ago at 230lbs, I lost 25Lbs, but now seem to plateau. I also have High UA and is limited to what I can eat to avoid flare ups, I drink the lemmon water and ACV water. I also consume no sugar or sweetener not even fruit. What can I do.

So, let me ask you this. I've heard that too much potassium can be harmful. I have thought about sypplimenring potassium but since hearing possible harmful side effects, I've steered clear. Can you over dose on potassium? Thanks
@macheadg5er
@macheadg5er 2 жыл бұрын
Darn near impossible to overdose unless you are trying to kill yourself. Ive been fighting low potassium my whole life ended up in the hospital twice because it was so low. I started taking potassium bulk powder haven't had any issues. I take 5000mg a day of potassium (via Potassium Gluconate) If you take too much your body will just urinate it out. So unless you take like a pound of it at once you are fine.

If you take a large bolus of potassium - say a full teaspoon worth of KCl, that may be enough to push your blood K levels up to dangerous levels. The kidneys are really good at preemptively excreting potassium as you consume it to keep the blood levels within normal range. Small doses of potassium salt such as 1/4 tsp in 16 oz of water won't be any issue. Food sources are no problem either since they take longer to break down and hence the potassium is time-released. Kidney diseases impair excretion, causing accumulation. Some diuretics called "potassium-sparing diuretics" will contribute to high blood potassium. Overall, yes an OD is possible if you have kidney disease, take certain diuretics, or consume a large bolus (think of a teaspoon of potassium salt). Food sources are the best way.

I am 100% getting your electrolyte support drink mix, I did the math on your 100 servings version and it is SO much cheaper than all of the many supplements I am taking! I have high hopes for it, I bet I’m deficient in a bunch of the trace minerals as well since I barely eat any leafy greens!
