They held a referendum for their independence and were attacked again until the UN intervened and sent international troops to secure their freedom. It's an absolute shame for Indonesia.

Sigh. First of all. No they didn't attack after the referendum. Second, Indo indeed attack Timor before it but it's backed by Australia(for the oil) and US(Cold war, Timor kinda left) as the supporter. Third, after the referendum Indonesia and Portugal(their former colony) solely prop up Timor from collapsing multiple times because their oil was stolen by certain country, Indo even be the one who invite Timor into ASEAN. Lastly, Indonesia at that time are under dictator (puppet of US to combat left that Hundreds of thousand communist (some are suspected) people were killed). The referendum kinda happened when the dictator toppled by the new president (which is honestly one of the best president in Indo). The referendum event also kinda dodgy as it's done by Australia instead of real UN too...

As a Pole I feel inclined to mention that no, Idonesia does not in fact have tallest Jesus statute. If we ignore the base (40m total) of it, which cleary is not the statue (23m without it), it is far from the tallest. The true #1 is in Poland (33m statue; 52.5m with the base/pedestal)

Spain only had one colony, Spanish Sahara . The rest were provinces and Viceroyalties, everyone in those provinces was just as citizen of the Kingdom as someone from mainland. Same rights and obligations (paying taxes)...

I hate that those are the best known outside Spain. Well, at least paella is really good, and jamón is the very best. But pulpo a la gallega, cochinillo, potes y menestras de varios tipos, all the excellent seafood and fish dishes... so many things are so much better than tortilla and croquetas and all the other well known dishes outside of Spain. We're known for our most boring foods. Not to mention charcuterie in Spain is the best in the world, imo.
