Fun fact: As I know "to be drunk as a Pole" comes from Napoleon times. He (Napoleon) said it after winning the battle that occurred after won battle and party. All soldiers were drunk but only Poles were conscious and able to fight and they won this second battle. So this was a positive idiom.

I am Swiss and I have only ever used the dot. I didn’t even learn until adulthood Europe mostly uses the comma, and I am still not used to it. We also have the best thousands separator , like this: 1'000'000.

I'm Swiss too, and I think it's a generational difference. I was taught to use the comma in school, but now I use the dot (I'm 37). However, most old people still use the comma.

A bit of explanations about some of the French expressions presented, since not all of them are that pejorative. 1) To send to the Greek calends: The "calends" only mean the first day of a month in the old Roman calendar (calends/calendar...). There was no calends in the Greek calendar, so that's why the expression means to postpone indefinitely. 2) To talk like a Spanish cow: The expression is usually "To speak [X language] like a Spanish cow". Like : I speak English like a Spanish cow. The cow could have been of any nationality, it still works. I speak Spanish like a German cow. 3) Montagnes russes: this is how we say "rollercoaster" in French. I think English-speakers also call a quick variation between two extremes a rollercoaster. 4) Go get lost at the Greeks: "Va te faire voir chez les Grecs!" (Go get yourself seen in Greece) really means: "F*ck you!" An allusion to the alleged common homosexuality in Ancient Greeks... 5) To leave the English way: "Filer à l'anglaise", is not really about fleeing, but leaving. When you leave your hosts without even telling them "Au revoir!" The English have the same expression but about the French...

The dot or comma in Canada depends if you're in a French influenced area or English influenced area. French areas usually follow Europe and use the comma, while English areas usually use the dot like England and USA.

This system gets quite annoying when dealing with data. Sometimes I have a European system generating the data and need to process it using an English (or American) program, which requires replacing commas with dots. This is also why you don't use decimal separators in data, since these are dots in continental numbers, and commas in English ones. An extra ctrl + F step is annoying enough.

The confusion with decimal separators comes from the fact most countries use both symbols, one for the decimal, the other for thousands separator. For my Japanese study I set my device settings to Japanese. With that all my calculation apps changed too. And yes, that means 20.000 is 20 as opposed to 20000 so I had to rewrite a lot of separators to fix that. Moreover, in some asian languages their characters separate by ten thousands (0000) instead: 一　1 十　1 0 百　1 00 千　1 000 万　1 0000 億　1 0000 0000 兆　1 0000 0000 0000

So, one thousand would be written as 1'000. I find this to be the best system, since one could pretty easily mistake commas and periods (especially when something is hand-written).

10:26 PPP stands for Purchasing Power Parity. GDP in real figures can be misleading because 100$ in USA is not the same as 100$ in other parts of the world. For example you can purchase a lot more stuff with 100 dollars in countries like Bangladesh, Vietnam or Nepal. So GDP in real terms can be a bit misleading.

and GDP takes everything and shoves it together. which makes it really difficult to really see how a place is doing. if you have 1 billionaire who has 100 billion and 1 million people without money together they have almost 100.000 per person. so in those statistics you would be a "great" place to be in. never take statistics at face value, always put them in context.

In part, fossil distribution depends on the age of the deposits in an area. You're not gonna find Cretaceous dinosaurs in Jurassic rock. The distribution of a species can also change over time. Horses, for example, evolved in North America but then went extinct there. Same as camels iirc.

I'm from Canada, specifically Quebec and we do use the dot or comma between dollars and cents but we use space for 1 000 or we just put 1000. Officially we use the comma, the dot is rare when it comes to money specifically.

The reason why Italy's gdp per capita dropped a lot between year 2000-2005 is because in 2002 we adopted EURO€. It is impossible to explain in a single comment but by doing this the mathematical conversion and economic conversion between euro and "lita-sterlina" (the previous currency) was a total mess, so many people lost a significant amount of money.

Yup same in France ,right of the bat when the € was adopted ,there was a +30% inflation on average,then a year after the € was adopted there was an additional +20% (So a total of +56%) Like for example ,the price of baguette did a +1900% and the price of potatoes did a +4000% Usually when a country change currency ,100 of the old currency will be equal to 1 of the new currency ,but here since every country had it's own currency ,it wasn't possible to do so business profited by inflating their price since consumer would need to bring a calculator to see real price and almost nobody was willing to do that anyways . Then there is something else ,when multiple country use the same currency ,there is an outflow and an inflow of money ,between the adoption (By the respective country) and 2018 ,German gain 22 Trillions ,Netherlands gain 20 Trillions and Greece gain 20 Billions (They are the only country that benefitted from the euro ,per capita ,the Netherlands is the one who benefitted the most) while all other lost money (France was the biggest loser with 20 Trillions ,Italy in 2nd ,losing 18 Trillions and Spain in 3rd losing 14 Trillions) And it's not data that can be seen on the GDP (Well there is still a part than is still reflected on the GDP ,Germany gain 3,5 Trillions ,the Netherlands gain 2,8 Trillions ,Greece gain 2 Billions while Italy lost 4,4 Trillions (So like losing 260 Billions yearly) ,France lost 4 Trillions ,Spain lost 2,5 Trillions ,Portugal lost 400 Billions ,Belgium lost 100 Billions) These data stop in 2018 so now it's even worse .

The Euro was the biggest scam in european history. The "Deutsche Mark" (german currency before the euro) was one of the strongest currencies (besides the dollar) and overnight prices changed from 100% to almost 200% (they just put the same number with a different currency symbol on the price tags). While salary/wages were left untouched (dropping by almost 50%). Which resulted in a buying power of 25% (!) compared to the previous currency.

What currency you use does not matter if you do all the GDP comparisons in the same currency (usually the US dollar). It is just that before the Euro, Italy was more able to manipulate the numbers to look better than it really was, together with a lot of low cost production shifting to Asia where the cheap stuff used to be made in Italy.

Even more interesting than the pure rank in GDP would be to see the actual GDP When a couple countries are very close together it wouldn't be surprising for them to rotate around a bit.

I believe the reason countries like China and India gain the rankings in economy so fast in 2005 - 2010 could be because the economy crash in 2008 taking everyone else down. I could be wrong though.

To explain the theme parks thing since I'm a Floridian and we've literally got all of them here, Disney pulls in those numbers because 1) Everything is stupidly expensive and overpriced. 2) Because they have parks (sometimes multiple) in other nations to give you a breakdown there is 2 in the US (Florida and California), 2 in China (Shanghai and Hong Kong), 1 in Japan (Tokyo), 1 in France (Paris). If we take their next closest competitor Universal there is 2 in the US (Florida and California), 1 in Japan (Osaka), 1 in Singapore, 1 in China (Beijing). All the other competitors are currently only US based with the exception of Six Flags apparently opening 1 park in Saudi Arabia of all places this year. So to summarize if only the US numbers are compared I can promise the numbers will be quite different and while I can only really speak for Floridians most of us hate Disney with a passion for various reasons, we really don't mind the other parks since they have some good stuff in there and are not as overpriced as Disney is.
