In this video, I'm fly fishing for one of the last pure strain's of rainbow trout native to California. Rumor is a train carrying the McCloud strain of rainbow trout found in northern California, broke down near this stream over 100 years ago. Rather than let them die they released them. What happened next is amazing, these rainbow's were able to self sustain and created this super special fishery that is catch and release only. Since they weren't a product of traditional stocking techniques the idea is they are genetically pure! I'd love to see it become a fly only stream to truly protect this incredible resource. But as you can see they are doing great and offer a really fun challenge. But be aware, this stream is known for its difficult fishing conditions. Some consider it the most difficult stream to fish in the region! See more below or visit my channel for more tips and destinations:

Oh man, I hope I didn't find or take it the day you stashed it. When I was editing the video I thought, someone might have put it beside that plant on purpose b/c it stood out. I'll can bring it up next time I'm in the area...hear fishpond has a good warranty and might fix it. Sorry if I accidentally stole your net lol!

@@LooknFishy After it broke, I stashed it next to "the white flowers". Turns out, they're everywhere the farther up you go right now. When I came back to grab it, I couldn't find it at all. I was laughing at myself for buying the camo version. Sadly, their warranty doesn't cover it. They offered me 25% off a new net, but that's about it. Don't worry about the net. I wanted it back just to send in. Now that I know I don't need to, there's really no point. I'd use the bag on it, but it's probably more trouble than it's worth. I appreciate you offering it back though! So crazy that I saw that on a youtube video!

@@mc1992hammer Definitely a crazy story...I knew the net was the highlight of the trip lol! Well that's too bad. I actually reached out to them to see if I could pay for it to be repaired. But they haven't responded.

I have to smile at the perfect timing watching this particular video as well as the MO. Blue Ribbon Slam! My wife and I were just over at the Roaring River Park and although I thought it was weird (didn't fish), I learned about wild fish at Cane Creek and plan to fish it. We migrated to Grove, OK. from Northern New England and trout water is rare here. Have been in a funk and these videos of streams not too far, have got the juices flowing again. Tight Lines.

Funny story about the section of stream you walked into at the beginning. I was in the area looking at bridges all day for work and my buddy and I decided to fish this at the end of the day. When we pulled into the parking area there was a guy with a golf club acting like a ninja. He and two girls headed down to the woods. After we got rigged up we were headed in to fish and walked up on those same people. One gal was half dressed and friendly. The other gal and guy didn’t say a word. They hauled it back to the parking area. After an hour or so fishing we got back to my truck to find my boots were stolen out of the back. They left my expensive cooler and my dry box and literally just took my boots. Moral of the story is to keep everything locked up here so the tweakers don’t steal it.

1:45 To all the beginner fishermen, this is how you catch fish. When you see a nice hole, walk well back behind the hole and then cast over top of the hole. If the fish don't know you're there, it's easy fishing. Very well done!

Love it when a plan works (first cast first fish)! Is that one of the new Orvis chest packs? I need to upgrade from my Umpqua to something that'll hold 2 fly boxes and that one looks like it might fit the bill - like the looks of the tippet holder too. But if that's the one I think it is reviewers are complaining that it rides too high and can't be adjusted to ride lower. How is it working for you?

Was also thinking of adding the backpack as I do a fair amount of hiking into spots and/or start early when it's cold (need somewhere to put my jacket & food) and need something a little less cumbersome than the Umpqua chest pack/Osprey backpack I currently use (straps everywhere). I'll have to go to Orvis and check it out!

About rigging: you’ve mentioned before that you go 9’ 2x then add 12” 3x, 12” 4x then first fly. This video you use 9’4x knotless leader. What drives your choice of leader system? Also, do you triple surgeon between sections or tippet ring? Thank you!
@LooknFishy
@LooknFishy 3 жыл бұрын
It really depends on how I'll be fishing. The system you mentioned is my gen nymph system for my 4wt and I use it more for when I might be mending a lot or changing to dries a lot. It gives me distance from the indi to fly line. Also helps in high sticking with a 10ft rod. Here I knew I wouldn't be mending much and high sticking with a 7.5ft rod...a really long leader would be nice for dries (like in my small stream walk thru) but I'd be holding the rod straight up while high sticking...so I go back to a more traditional leader.

Similar thing, though much more intentional, happened with the California Golden (Oncorhynchus aguabonita); the stockings that made it to Wyoming and Montana, and then Idaho, happened to be from 100% pure Volcano Creek strain (the most brightly-colored morph of the species type Golden Trout). Those stocking happened earlier than most other trout stocking, and were put in such remote places that no other stockings of any fish made it into those lakes. That is why the purest Golden Trout in the whole world today swim in Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana.

@@LooknFishy Thank you for making the video! My wife (and our 4-year-old daughter) have developed a great love over the years for the Golden Trout, and have been lucky enough to pursue them successfully in a lot of places. It is a real miracle that such pure Goldens of the most colorful strain were put in such inaccessible places. Moreover, every even halfway-decent Golden drainage in Wyoming and Idaho (with 1 exception in Montana) has impassible barrier falls, so all the lakes at the top of the drainage have no other fish but pure Goldens. In fact, they have been in there and undisturbed for so long that the Golden populations in some of the drainages have actually adapted differing coloration. One series of lakes and their connecting creek in the Wind River Range produces many Goldens that have a darker, bronze-like back, and are colored a deep purple, instead of the classic red. One drainage seems to kick out only fish of the classic species-type, Volcano Creek Golden. Another lake chain and their stream has a lot of Goldens that are an almost-comical banana yellow. Not all the fish in the first and third drainages show these interesting phenotypes, but you never seem to find one of the exceptional colorations in any of the other waters, i.e., you'd never see a dark purple one in the third drainage, nor a banana yellow fish in the first. If you show an experienced Wyoming Golden angler a photo of a creel of Goldens caught from a self-sustaining population, he or she can likely tell you from which of the 3 best drainages it comes just by the coloration of at least 1 of the fish! I was blessed enough last summer to catch the Idaho state catch-and-release record Golden (it was superseded not long after by a really great guy who also knew the lake well), and I can't wait for late June when I can get back! I would never ask you to give up the location of this stream, but could you tell us in what state it is? That does NOT look like the intermountain west to me!

Those definitely looked like McCloud River rainbows. I got to fish the McCloud several years ago and verified that, yes, they are a stunning looking rainbow strain. They were stocked widely for just that reason. BTW, most of the fish on the second day were cutthroat. Different stream?

It's a dorsey yarn indicator. You have to make them and depending on how many strands of yarn you use...they can float some weight (this was a 10 to 12 strand). There's a great vid by troutbitten that goes into where to get the materials and how to make. Definitely worth a watch!
