3 жыл бұрынOn day 2 of my Fly Fishing the Driftless Series, I'm Fly Fishing a Small Stream in the Driftless for wild browns. The seasons are starting to change and the dry fly bite wasn't happening so I ended up nymphing most of the day, which wasn't bad. The browns were hungry and found a few wild rainbows to round out this excellent day. Check out the other parts below:

I plan on hitting Colorado in April for a week long backpacking trip. I started watching your videos while researching fly fishing. Being a native Texan I've never done it before. Your videos are awesome and have helped me figure some things out. Thanks for sharing.

I love the editing man. View of the water, cast , drift , hook set release. There is great flow to you vids. A little sun , dry fly time. You don’t miss many chances to throw drys. Cool place I hope to get back up there soon. Your videos remind me that It has been to long since my last visit up there.

Thank u much! Yea, I pretty much travel to throw dries. All we get here in AR is nymphing year round...maybe some caddis in April. So when I get the chance, I'm throwing a dry lol! Yep, always look forward to these trips....no bears, sketchy roads, rattle snakes or moose lol!

Im binge watching Drew, bringing back some memories. Nothing like a trout stream. If you ever come back to the Driftless, let me know. Its where i hang out and might be able to point you to some new places. Keep it up, great vids.

@@LooknFishy And it's rather cool how you aren't afraid to do some walking and bushwaking! A couple of those holes are a good trek deep in wild parsnip and stinging neetles. But it's necessary to do in order to fish the right side of the water. Crazy thing is we may have crossed paths. If this is the 22nd. I stayed at different place the two days prior and spent my morning on another stream just north of this one. Then came down here for the afternoon/evening. I parked my grey VW up by the better spot and walked out after dark.

Haha...I believe we did. I remember a guy walked out and packed up in the dark with a head lamp. I remember thinking, that guy has the right idea! Love that stream, definitely one of my favorites!

@@LooknFishyYep...yours truly. I was trying to get every bit of my last day. Pretty glad I packed the light, I wasn't planning on staying so late and things were going pretty good right before dark. I like to get back beyond the 3rd or 4th crossing. Or down to the spring and work my way back. It seems most of the "hit it, git it and go's" don't go much further. Most just run to those bigger pools along the path. The place is a true gem for sure. Peaceful

Girlfriend and I just got back from a 3 day trip to the Wisconsin driftless. Caught lots of excellent fish. The BWO hatches were definitely hot and heavy in the afternoon.

This stream could easily be in England , perhaps Derbyshire, it’s a lovely peaceful location with unkept banks which I love (if you do ever fish in England avoid beats with mown banks!)

Heard that a few times from others over there! Yea, I definitely avoid areas that don't look wild or too accessible! Typically the easiest place to stand a present a fly, isn't the most productive, which probably explains why I'm always itching from rolling around in stinging nettles lol!

I tend to linger lol. The bh and the emerger posted a pic in my community (blurry in the vid) were great the entire trip. The emerger was the star in the next vid!

Haha, nah really just got started on it in July. But definitely doing more with it since it allows me to tell the story and not just 60sec or less clips!

Awesome. Love it. I was wondering, how can you tell the difference between a stocked and wild rainbow? Also, a local fly shop in the Wisconsin driftless has been reporting a bwo hatch in the afternoons. I haven't seen it, but I only fish once or twice a week. Keep up the great work!

Things I look for are white tipped fins, adipose, full fins and parr markings on smaller fish. Hatchery fish usually have rubbed off fins and lack the coloration of wild fish. Also, most of the fish in that area are stocked catchable trout (you'll see that in a vid soon lol). Ultimately it's just a guess though.

Drew - just found your videos..love them so far. I don't fly fish but do trout fish and love watching this type of stuff. I have a question - how do you find those camping spots??? I am hoping to make a trip to the driftless this summer sometimes and if spots like this are available it would make the trip a little cheaper than finding a campsite in the area

No worries, I grew up on the conventional side. Did 50/50 for years. Definitely takes some digging and also past trips. WI for example has more campgrounds, not much dispersed until you get close to the north woods. IA, has unimproved and dispersed camping options, which is why I usually camp in IA and fish MN and WI. I have another video on here from the Iowa driftless which links free maps. These show access and camping locations. For ex, the confluence with north and south bear, there's a pull off camping area near the bridge.

How would you rate the Fly fishing and the size of the fish in the driftless zone in Wisconsin Compared to some western states.

Apples and oranges! Both are world class but completely different. I wouldn't suggest one over the other...you really need to experience it. I try to fish it early before runoff or late, when the west is dry. I'll add, I wouldn't head to the driftless for larger than average fish...but I live in AR so if large trout were my thing I'd just stay home and fish the white!

Where was your camp set up? I live near the driftless area and just got into fly fishing. Looking for some good places to go and trying to pick between a setup for little smallmouth and trout. Great video sir!

So it changes from state to state and fishery to fishery. Not one standard and likely to have several restrictions on one stream. Can be confusing and up to the angler to educate themselves on the regs.

Are you running just one fly under the indicator? Also it seems like a shorter than normal distance between the indicator and fly, just skinny water?

Started with 2 but after a couple hours of fish just taking the top fly I cut the dropper off. The day was kind of random...definitely some skinny water plus fish were all over the water column...even had one eat an emerger on the surface behind an indicator.

Fishing a strike indicator is about the only way to effectively fish these types of streams. Too many overhanging trees to high stick it through the seams. And if you can high stick you end up spooking them because you're so close.

I tell people all the time, indi's are the best in all types of water but I'm yet to find a situation where they don't fish...especially if you understand the limitations and adjust accordingly. Would have loved to gone dry-dropper...usually come here in June and it's incredible!

@@LooknFishy I struggle on Pocket water using a indicator. The water is so turbulent that you miss the take because the indicator is constantly moving. Maybe I'm doing something wrong with my rig. The depth varies so much through the seam too, hard to set the drop length.

Yep, definitely one of the disadvantages of the indi. Air locks are my go to for heavy pocket water bc I can add so much weight...to get down quick but also drop with not too much pressure. But I wouldn't argue with anyone that EU style is more effective. And that's what I love about fly fishing always something else to learn!

I am a euro fan boy. No spooking with a tuck cast in the pocket. I like to switch it up because Euro so easy. I would love to get into those runs and drag a nymph across their faces until I got bored. Dry dropper takes me back to bobber fishing with worms except they might take my hopper. Been doing dry dropper all fall because Euro is boring. Streamers get my bass masters blood pumping. Not one rig is better than the other unless you trying to stack numbers. Fishing is fun period.

Wow... tight casting area at around 8:45ish. Also, I wanted to ask what I see on your line and then you talked about your "indicator" and how does that work and why is it not seen during your casting? Nice fish too.

Gotta be comfortable in tight spaces lol! So I prefer a dorsey yarn indicator b/c they are easy to cast...basically nothing on your line. Plus, they are super sensitive and can hold a fair amount of weight. I use a lot of camo style so might get lost during casting. Got a video in my tips section that goes over indicators, which I use and why. It was back when I was getting comfortable talking to a camera...and it shows...but the info is solid!

Can you discuss or do a video on your most common ways you setup this type of rig? Like what wt line etc? 2 fly system under the indicator or just a single nymph?

The last video in this series I walk through my set up and explain everything. But that's day 5...so let me answer your question. 7.5' 3wt battenkill II reel w/orvis pro textured line. Leader changes as the situation does (each stream is a little different) but most common was 7.5' 3x knotless leader, add 1ft of 4x, medium tippet ring...then 1ft ish of 4x or 5x to first fly...1ft ish of 5x to a second fly. I fish 2 flies 90% of the time...unless it's not needed, if I'm having lots of success with 1...no need to complicate it, I'll cut the 2nd off. Use dorsey yarn indicators a bunch and exclusively on this trip. Hope that answers some of your questions. A vid on systems does seem like a great idea!

New to fly fishing, and was just wondering, do you wear waders all the time? What type, and do you still do some bushwhacking with them on? I’m afraid of puncturing a hole in them, and have them start to leak on me. Ya know with the amount of money they cost n all, I can’t afford to be ruining them. Not like I can just run out to the store a just purchase another set, ya know what I mean. Curious on what you do?

I only wear waders when the situation requires them, which is getting close. But don't most of the summer and try to avoid doing any serious hiking just bc they aren't fun to hike in. However, the top brands like simms and orvis make waders using gore-tex or cordura which are super durable. They are pricey but should last many years. I'll absolutley bushwack in them, have slipped and slid down embankments and fallen on large rocks w/o issue...except it hurts lol! Imho, get the best waders you can afford. The cheaper ones are basically just plastic liners and less durable. Plus, they really can enhance your experience on the water. Sucks to be cold and/or have leaky waders lol!

@@LooknFishy I'd have to research it. Its more of legend. The place they did talk about it, back in the day was Iowa. But even then, doubtful. I'll have to hit up my local dudes there and see what they say. Tiger trout tho

Both really...May/June is fun for dries. But Sept/Oct is nice weather, fires, season is changing...less people, and more nymphing! I say go spring and fall lol!

Honestly don't have one. I just try fish what I see or feel should be in the water. My flies are pretty basic...spend too much time on the road to tie complicated patterns! Probably should do a video on this one day!

I do when I need the reel/drag to play the fish or manage it from getting tangled in brush (which I try to manage while fishing by only having the line out that I need to fish and not more). But in general, I feel comfortable playing the fish off the reel in these clips which saves me time bc I don't need to strip it off to return to fishing after the release.

Funny thing is I went into a gas station on the way up and tried to...but all they had was Goose Island and bud light! I was like, for real...never had that happen before lol! Lesson learned
