============
In this video, I’m going to give you an awesome combination exercise that you’ll be able to use to efficiently work your entire back, all in one go. We’re talking the upper, middle and lower traps, the rhomboids, teres major, the infraspinatus, the erector spinae, and even the lats, will all be hit with this exercise, while only using free weights - which can be particularly valuable for you if you don’t have access to a cable machine or a pull-up bar. It can also be an excellent finisher, or serve as a great way to quickly hit literally all of the back muscles if you happen to be in a rush and don’t have time to go through a full back routine!
With free weights the resistance is gravity, so by performing these shrugs while standing straight up we ensure that we’re getting max resistance by moving directly against gravity. This elevation of your shoulders works primarily the upper trapezius. Because many of the upper trap fibers originate up in your neck, and travel down to insert on the scapula, it will pull the scapula up in that shrug motion. However, in this exercise, we don’t just do standard shrugs. At the end of the combo, we move into several extremely important reps of what are called Hang Pulls. Skeletal muscle fibers aren’t all the same. They’re broken down into two different categories, Type 1 fibers - also called “slow-twitch” fibers, and Type 2 fibers, which are also called “fast-twitch” fibers. So why is that important to understand when working your back? The answer is that almost all your back muscles are primarily composed of type-1 muscle fibers, excep...
For more on how the rest of the exercise hits your middle / transverse traps, rhomboid major, rhomboid minor, infraspinatus, teres major, lower / ascending traps, lats (latissimus dorsi), and erector spinae (longissimus, iliocostalis, and spinalis), watch the video!

I’m 83. Watched this back video all the way through. Thank you, for your explanation. I have been doing your biceps and triceps ex’rs, for three weeks, I like them. Did not care for information on all the muscles involved in the movements. The back video changed my mind! I will pay attention and learn. Thank you!

Micheal, why do you wear elastic bands around your arms when you exercise them? What does it do? And sometimes the elastic bands are moved to the top of the arm and sometimes at the elbow. Any reason for that?

Absolutely love the content, very few KZfaq channels out there break it down like this and show how to work all the muscles from different angles. Recently watched your calve video as well and it was the first time I came across doing the calve raises from a bending position as well to ensure to work the other calve muscle. Keep up the amazing work 👏

Aloha Dr. Kamalu, the legendary Dr. Gains! Your content has dramatically improved my understanding of my physiology and anatomy. I truly appreciate my body for what it is and what it could be because of your videos! After applying the many concepts of the biomechanics at play with gravity and where each muscle tissue is truly activated, I’ve been noticing huge results. I’ve been getting some gains in the gym! I’m sure I’m one of many people who have been positively affected by your work and would definitely love to see a community grow out of this.

Hi Dr. Gains, great video! These videos you make are super helpful and I have never found anyone as good as you to explain stuff in this detail yet clear and understandable. Do you think you can do a video on reps/sets? On how heavy you should work out? If you should increase weights during the workout? If you should lift untill you get tired or do as heavy as possible? The exercises and the ways to do them that you show has really helped me, but I would find some info from you on how heavy they should be done for maximal gains and minimal pains really helpful to, or just some info about the subject!

Love your videos, I was wondering how your considerations apply to elastic bands
@DrGains
@DrGains 2 жыл бұрын
You can definitely replicate most exercises with bands.. the one big difference is that the resistance with bands is variable rather than constant (resistance gets "heavier" as you stretch it). That's not always a bad thing though, and you can still get much of the benefits!

Great video! Perhaps a little off topic, but it would be great to see similar videos showing the muscle action during activities, e.g. swimming.

Hi Dr Gains, everything you say makes total sense when you incorporate all of the physiology. Thanks for this! One question. I feel like I could do these types of exersizes with a good assortment of bands, do you see any downside to this?
@DrGains
@DrGains 2 жыл бұрын
You're very welcome! You can definitely replicate most exercises with bands.. the one big difference is that the resistance with bands is variable rather than constant (resistance gets "heavier" as you stretch it). That's not always a bad thing though, and you can still get much of the benefits!

Just introduced to your channel. Love this vid. I enjoy geeking out on the anatomy stuff but with 17 shoulder muscles and 500 plus others, I think many would be happy to learn about the most efficient exercises (compound) for the most bang for our gym buck, along with a handful of exercises that are not easily covered by compound exercises.. Changing body position is brilliant- I never see that. Can't work out 6 hours a day to hit every muscle. JMO. FYI, like many I am returning form Covid gym closures and a bit soft, work out about 1.5 hrs, 5 days a week 50/35/15 (time) upper lower core.

i know you went over muscle fibers briefly but muscle fiber are actually on a continuum and all muscle fibers are trainable so you can change the slow twitch to be more fast twitch if you train properly.

Great video and breakdown ! However, I have a question on activation Type I vs Type II fibers. In this exercise you are varying activation by how quickly the exercise is performed, but can you not also vary the activation by increasing or decreasing the load based off your 1 RM ; independent of velocity?

I'd say give both a shot, and stick with whatever feels best! If you can't go all the way down you'll definitely want to supplement this exercise with other ways to target the lats and lower back 👍
